Thanks jej.

I always look on craigslist first.

The only thing in my area at the time was one guy with 20-25-30 pounders for sale, but he wanted more per lb. than Play it Again for them and wouldn't budge on the price, so I went with the 15-40 pounders from Play it Again. If I had waited a while I probably could have done better on craigslist but I was in one of those "gotta have em now" moods if you know what I mean.

Sure. I have done that more than once.

My set of fixed weight DBs did not make my last move, except for a few small ones that I threw in a tool box for the trip. I do miss them, but I get along OK with handles and plates, especially since I have one pair more or less permanently suspended from Powerhooks from a bar on my squat rack, ready for DB inclines and goblet suuats and such.

Monday May 23, 2011

This was my first day of working with my full set (15-40 lbs) of Dumbbells, so I was just feeling my way around trying to decide what I want to do, and also getting use to working with them.

Overall I feel pretty good about these four exercises for upper body. I'm balancing pushing and pulling for the first time, instead of all pushing.

I've tried to self diagnose my right shoulder problem from stuff I've read on the net, and I think it's bursitis. I found that by rotating my right hand counterclockwise on the one arm dumbbell bench press I can do them without any pain, as opposed to the straight bar where I'm stuck with the same grip angle.

ONE ARM DUMBBELL ROWS:

Weight L R
20 LBS. 12 12
25 LBS. 10 10
30 LBS. 8 8
35 LBS. 6 6
40 LBS. 4 4

ONE ARM BENCH PRESS:

Weight L R
20 LBS. 12 12
25 LBS. 10 10
30 LBS. 8 8
35 LBS. 6 6
40 LBS. 4 4

ONE ARM STANDING PRESS

Weight L R
15 LBS. 10 10
20 LBS. 8 8
25 LBS. 6 6
30 LBS. 4 4
35 LBS. 2 2

TWO ARM HAMMER CURLS

LEFT ARM RIGHT ARM REPS
15 LBS. 15 LBS. 10
20 LBS. 20 LBS. 8
25 LBS. 25 LBS.. 6
30 LBS. 30 LBS. 4
35 LBS. 35 LBS. 2

Got a total of 7,000 lbs. of volume in.

I feel pretty good about that.

I'm thinking I'll do the same thing next upper body day (Friday)

Thanks!

No, I'm trying out a modified by me version of the Coan-Phillipi routine for Squats and Deads.

http://tsampa.org/training/scripts/coan _phillipi_deadlift/

I'm starting with week 2 which is 1 set of 2 with 80% followed by 8 sets of 3 with 65%.

Went to an orthopedic MD last Wednesday.

He examined my shoulder and seems to think it's some mid bursitis, or maybe a minor rotator tear. Gave me a shot of coritisone and some light shoulder stabilization exercises to do.

He advised me to stay away from heavy weight training on the shoulder for at least six weeks. So I'm keeping things real light. Still probably more than he recommended.

15 mile Bike Ride.

Not timed.

I found myself watching and obsessing so much with the damned Bike Computer that I wasn't enjoying the ride, so I took it off my bike and put it away.

The Van Fleet Trail where I read has mile markers all along it. That'll be enough. From now on I'm just going to ride comfortably and keep track of mileage only.

30 mile bike ride on rails to trails.

I like doing this cardio, but I think I'm going to have to scale back my lifting some to compensate.

My legs are tired from the biking and I've got a squat workout tomorrow.

Bodyweight 231 lbs.

Squats

Touch and goes to a 13 inch box.

At 5 minute intervals

20 kg (044 lbs.) x 8
40 kg (088 lbs.) x 6
60 kg (132 lbs.) x 4
70 kg (154 lbs.) x 4

I had to cut this squat workout way short.

My lower back was fried from yesterdays 30 mile bike ride. I felt like I was risking an injury on every rep. Just not worth it.

I want to do both weights for strength and biking for cardio, but I'm going to have to make some adjustments in both intensity and scheduling to do that.

I just can't hack squats and deadlifts and biking too. At least not yet. My back still hurts from trying to do squats the day after a 30 mile bike ride.

For the time being I'm going to bike three days a week, Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday, and do upper body dumbbells twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.

Nice work, John. Is your back still dicey?

Thanks for asking Blevin.

Yeah, it's still bugging me.

The biking is new to me and that's what's doing it, so squats and deads are out for now, until hopefully I adjust to biking three times a week.

15 mile bike ride.

I think I've found the cause of my aching back.

About four weeks ago my doctor increased my Crestor dosage from 10mg to 20mg. Since that time I have been having muscle soreness that I was chalking up to changing my exercise routine. Yesterday I skipped my Crestor dose and today I feel a lot better. I'm going to stay off of Crestor and weights for a few days, and just do the biking. If the muscle aches go away completely I'll try going back to my old 10mg dose by cutting the 20mg Crestor tablets in half.

John

It's all about trial and error. A drug withour side effects of some sort is a rare animal.

BTW your training/cardio split looks really good. You seem to be concentrating where it matters most. Whats your diet like?

All the best

John

I did not go back and read your entire log to check - - but have you tried to address your cholesterol and need for Crestor with diet? It works for some, and worked for me.

Yeah, I tried it.

The less fat and cholesterol I eat, the more my body makes. I went on an extremely low fat almost vegetarian diet for a couple of months and my cholesterol got worse.

You don't have to tell me that. Before Crestor I went thru at least a half a dozen different ones.

I've been on Crestor 10mg for about 7 years now with no problems. My LDl was 114, which is not bad and my doc decided he wanted to see if going to 20 mg would get it lower. Problem is, my body won't tolerate the 20, so I'm going back to 10 now.
