Re: Judge John's Training Log

This is one of the splits recommended. It includes one large body part (chest, back, thighs) and one smaller (biceps, triceps, calves). I am presently working out Mon, Tues. THurs., Friday. This gives me two days on, one off, two on, two off. Each bodypart gets direct stimulation once per week. I have gained much, much better by doing each bodypart once per week. I find for me, I need the recovery time. Also, there is a deconditioning period that I feel is very important. The muscle recovers and gets nailed again after it is in a more vulnerable condition. I have found for me that training a muscle more often doesn't allow enough recovery and also the muscle is too well toned when it is exercised again and, as a result, not enough damage is done during the training. This "damage" is what causes growth.

Hope this helps.

Sure does John.........now I get it......

I've fallen in love with the 8x8's.....I bought my stop watch today. I got tired of shoving folks out of the way so I could see the clock.

There's a woman that is a friend of my wifes that works the desk at the gym. When she's on duty she comes over to chit chat with me......it doesn't matter what I'm doing, she just starts talking.....this morning was leg day, she came over when I was on set #6 of my leg extensions.....she opened her mouth and then saw my face contorted in a teeth clenching wild do or die expression and just turned and walked away........ahhhhhh, the peace of a few forced reps....lol.

Thanks.

You're welcome, Art. It's tough when people come over to talk. You just can't. The stopwatch helps. Not only does it keep you within the 30 second limit but it signals others to "leave me alone!" It's ok to tell someone what you are doing and tell them that you can't talk just now. I hate to be anti-social but I am not in the gym to talk (as many are).

Let me know how you are doing with it. Enjoy the pain!

This is becoming more and more of an issue with me. I look forward to seeing my gym friends, but I just don't want to spend 2 hours in the gym. Headphones also help with this. And, Art - I'm a teeth-clencher, too, when the reps get tough.

Art,

I read the thread,"Vince Again" and I will post my thoughts there.

I decided to get back by doing 6x6 and for only one exercise per bodypart since I had to double up and didn't want to cripple myself.

The 6x6 is so much easier than 8x8 - it is much more than just 2 more reps and 2 more sets. I felt like I was on vacation! It felt real good though. I am going to use 6x6 again tomorrow and Friday to complete my routine for one cycle and then decide what I will do next week. I may change to 6x6 entirely or stay with 8x8 for another week or two. I have been at the 8x8 for a month and it is almost my usual time for a change anyway.

Today: (5/25)

Pec Deck

100/6x6

Alternate Dumbbell Curls

30/6x6

Lateral Machine

90/6x6

Rear Delt Flyes

20/6x6

Cable Pushdown

115/6x6

I kept the rest periods between sets down to under 20 seconds since I was doing 2 less reps per set and one less exercise per bodypart. I got a good pump and left the gym feeling terrific.

The endorphin high is wonderful. I missed it while I was away and today when I left the gym, I cranked up the stereo and was beating on my steering wheel all the way home. How can people not exercise regularly? What a high!

Cybex Adjustable Cable Lat Pulls

140/6/6

Hyperextensions

6/6

Hanging Leg Raises

12/6

Hammer Ab Crunch Machine

100/6/6

I stayed with 6/6 for today and will again tomorrow. I am really thinking I will change to this for the next month or so. I was able to increase all the weights since the sets and reps were cut by 2. My breathing is easier and mentally it is much less stressful. I got leaner these past few weeks with 8/8. I want to see what happens with 6x6 for awhile. Abs are starting to peek through without cardio or much adjustments in diet. I have cut back on cals and protein a bit but not a cutting diet by any means. I also kept my rest between sets down to 20 seconds today, as opposed to 30 seconds while on the 8x8. I am going to see if that will keep the gains as lean as 8x8 while I have better recuperation. Isn't this fun, experimenting?

Thanks, Wicked. I got what I wanted from 8x8. I usually go 6 weeks with a routine but I did 6x6 to get caught up after the trip and now it just feels right, you know what I mean? So we'll see how it goes.

I was able to increase the weights considerably and also kept the rest down to under 20 seconds other than the calf raises since the last time I cramped and I wanted to avoid that. The increase felt good and going to 6x6 just feels right for now. I will stay with this next week and see where it takes me. I was also surprised to see that my weight dropped to 212 after visiting my mother and sister. I not only went to a graduation party but had my mother constantly trying to force feed me with all sorts of nasty stuff like cookies and ice cream. My resistance was good and I came out in good shape.

When we returned from Florida, we picked Rocky up from the kennel and he developed kennel cough even though he is vaccinated. Now I guess I had "sympathy cough." The two of us are in competition to see who can sound closer to death. Man, I am sick. I have an upper respiratory infection and dealing with my asthma. Although I felt terrible last night, I still was planning on going to the gym today. But this morning, it is worse. No gym today - it sucks! Cough meds, asthma meds, cough drops, tea with honey and brandy - I am so tired of coughing - it is so severe that I am now coughing up blood. So I guess the gym is out for at least today and probably longer. I HATE MISSING TRAINING! It screws up my whole schedule - damn! Well, maybe tomorrow.

Thanks, guys! I spent the day watching TV, reading, snoozing and coughing - mostly coughing. My throat really is sore but at least my abs are getting a good workout. Rocky is almost over his kennel cough. Hopefully, I'll be better in another day or two. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can overcome this without a doctor visit since I don't even have a doctor here yet.

Judge,

Yes, there are allergies galore in NC. I did not want to say anything because you are near the water and might not suffer from the polluted air of the inner cities. Coughing up blood is not good. Not good at all.

I am sure you have tried all types of natural remedies but have you heard of Black Cumin Seed Oil? The seed has been used for centuries and is considered a effective way to relieve asthma. I know someone who has asthma and will try the seed. I will let you know.

Look at the nutritional value of this seed. It has over 100 components that have not all been analyzed! What I have heard is scientists are studying the seed in order to duplicate its effectiveness in a manufactured drug.

You can read all about it at this link:

Sharon,

Thanks for the info. I read the info on the site and decided to give the oil a try. Yes, I have tried many natural remedies but have never heard of black seed or black seed oil.

In Long Island, where I moved from, there were much allergins and mold due to dampness. I often wonder if my asthma was caused by working out at home in my basement for many years. I didn't have asthma until I was in my 40's. My daughter moved to VA and her asthma has markedly improved. My other daughter lives in Cary (inland) but has never had asthma difficulties. I was hoping my move to NC would cure my asthma and it has been better but not resolved. This time it is an infection or virus rather than just asthma. The asthma is secondary this time. I am reasonably sure that the blood was from a broken blood vessel in my throat since I tend to cough very violently. I often feel like I am going to pass out while coughing.

I will try the oil and let you know how it works. Let me know about your friend's experiences as well.

Thank you much for your concern and the information.

John

Judge,

I am going to try the black seed oil myself for an immune system booster. The oil is more potent versus the seed. It must be the "Nigella sativa" seed. Also, from what I have read, it takes quite a while before the oil builds in your system to become effective for asthma.

This herb was recommended by one of the bodybuilders from Arnold's era. He said the oil increased his energy levels.

Did you see this page of the website in the left hand column and read all the uses of this herb? The herb has been said to cure everything except death! Everybody is different so we shall see.

Sharon,

We'll have to compare notes. I plan on taking a teaspoon per day. I read the entire site. It was interesting. Unfortunately, I have found many so-called natural remedies not to be too effective but some have worked great. So I want to give it a try. We'll have to compare notes with our test run.

OK, now the important question - ketchup or vinegar? I have to laugh about the battle over the two forms of BBQ - east-vinegar and whole hog vs. west-ketchup and vinegar and just the shoulder. I haven't been here long enough to try BBQ so I have no opinion yet but since I am in the east, I can't proclaim western BBQ as better even if I find I prefer it.

That is correct, some of this "Natural" stuff is just junk.

Ha! Ha! Ha! My cousin owns Lexington Barbeque in Lexington NC. I like both but was raised on the vinegar based barbeque.

My cousin owns this restaurant. I have not been there in years.
http://www.hollyeats.com/Lexington.htm

The best barbeque I ever had was out in the country of South Carolina. They killed the pig and cooked him all day continually basting the pig with a sauce like I have never tasted in my life. Yes, it was vinegar based.

All day long local townspeople and guests would slaunter up to the pig pit and heap their plates full of the most succulent, tender meat I have ever tasted. Nothing has ever compared to that experience.

I am going to my first pig roast BBQ next week. There is going to be a block party on the block where my house will be built. I guess it will be vinegar since this is eastern, NC. All the pork here is so terrific. Much more tender and flavorful than in NY. I guess it is because it is so fresh.

Lexington is where they were going to have the festival that the legislature was voting to make it the State BBQ Festival. That is what started the recent argument. I guess I will check out western BBQ this summer when I vacation in the mountains in Boone.

There are some good people in that town and there is some good barbeque.

I would like to see the town of Mt. Airy also. I have met people that are just like Andy Taylor (Griffith). He is a good ole North Carolina boy.

OOPS! My Bad! My cousin does not own Lexington Barbeque but they do own Hill's Lexington Barbeque! The place looks just the same but no way do they have that much business.

Hey Judge, look what I discovered!
I was looking at the Garden of Life PM CLeanse and Primal Defense products which are designed to remove toxins while boosting your immune system. The basic(base) ingredient in these products is Black Cumin Seed Oil. The Oil is the magic ingredient for their products!

Garden of Life is a quality product so hopefully you purchased a good quality Black Cumin Seed Oil and it works for you!

Well, it's been a lost week! I have been so sick. :( Finally, tonight, after all sorts of meds and inhaling albuterol and going through boxes and boxes of tissues, I feel that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Damn, it has been tough sitting or laying around all day coughing and trying to breathe. The throat started to feel better yesterday and tonight the nasal passages and my brochial tubes are finally clearing.

No $%^& training all week!!!! Aaaauuuugggghhhhhh!!!!! I felt so lousy emotionally as well just doing nothing. I am one who shaves my face and head everyday regardless of whether or not I am leaving the house. THis week I just got grubby. Awful. This afternoon after I showered, I shaved it all and felt like a human again.

I am still not well enough to go to the gym tomorrow. I have to be sure not to relapse. So I will just skip the whole week and hope to be back to schedule on Monday.

You don't appreciate breathing until you can't!

Wicked, Rocky loves to get his chest scratched. I told him it was from you, bro and he made one of those boxer smiles.

His chest is white and it is the softest feeling you ever felt. Everyone loves to touch his chest. I told Marie that when he goes, I want a pelt of his chest. She didn't find that funny.

And I would like to say that I have given up on finding good pork BarBQ up here in the northeast!!! I don't think it's a matter of it being fresh.. I think they just don't know how to make it up here. I always make sure to have a sandwich from my favorite BarBQ place in Tupelo, Mississippi, on each family visit. Johnny's BarBQ, just in case any bombers make it down there.

You guys are the best! I am disappointed that it is Saturday and I still feel like s@#$! My breathing is shallow and congestion is tough. I WILL be back in the gym on Monday though.

Ardena, it was great to hear from you. I have to tell you that BBQ here in NC is serious business. There is even a battle within the state - eastern vs. western BBQ. Tomorrow I am going to a Pig Roast Block Party and will test it out. The people on the street where we are building our new home invited us so we can meet the new neighbors. Hopefully, this infection will allow me to "pig out."

Hey Judge John,

Were you a Principal of a High School?

I was just thinking about my High School Principal. He was a kinda a dick. A real disciplinarian. Not very friendly. A real hard ass. Never talked to any of the students. The only time the student body ever heard from him was when it was sometthing discipline related. Mr Wilkerson. This was back in the '70s and I dont think he understood what all the long hair and rock music was all about. He was old school.

Isn't the NC BBQ sauce vinegar based and not very sweet. Could be why Ardena doesn't like it ?

CB,

Yes eastern NC BBQ sauce is vinegar based. Western BBQ is vinegar and ketchup, thus sweeter. And Ardena is a sweetie.

Tim,

I taught in junior high and high school levels, as well as, elementary. But I was a principal for 19 years in an elementary school. I am sure all the kids knew who I was! Although it was a highly stressful job, I loved it. I read to the kids, dressed up each year for Halloween (the one they seemed to remember best was when I was Mr. Clean), had the entire school sing holiday songs for Christmas (even though there was some looks from my bosses) and met my kids at the door each morning to get my hugs. Each year I challenged the kids in the entire school to read a million minutes and I would reward them. The first year I cooked homemade tomato sauce for over 700 people. Another year I baked brownies for everyone and a number of times I was the ice cream man and made over 700 sundaes. The TV station had me on the news several times with my chef and ice cream man costumes. It was a blast.

I don't miss the paperwork or the occasional wacko parent; I don't miss the abuse situations and dealing with Child Protective Service; I don't miss the political crap. I miss my wonderful staff and, man, I miss my kids and all the hugs! Miss that alot!

Judge John,

My Elementary school Principal never did any of that stuff! Mr Kemper was the guy you would go see if you got into trouble. He was another guy that you didnt see much. Never interacted with the kids. Maybe he went to the same Principal training school as my High School Principal did. Not a lot of hugs going on there.

Tim,

My daughters didn't know who their principal was! There is a lot of pressure on the office and there is a ridiculous amount of paperwork and nonsense to deal with but I feel sorry for these administrators who miss out on the wonder of the kids in their schools. Of course, honestly, I was the "unusual" one. There weren't too many out there who were bodybuiilders with shaved heads and an earring. At our weekly principals' meetings, no one would sit next to me because I would cut up and get them in trouble. In the conference room the seats were all filled around the big table but the seat next to me was always empty. I visited a few weeks ago and they keep it empty in my memory! I guess I was the weirdo but I loved it! LOL!!!

Actually, it's the NY/NJ BBQ that I don't like. I think it's more a problem with the preparation than the sauce... The meat is usually too fatty and tough. I give up. :)

I've always figured you were the best of principles... I could tell, you see, perhaps because I got to know a lot of them when I was a kid... ;-))

Ardena -- my wife's family meets in Tupelo every spring. Is Johnny's BBQ that place on the main street through town, the one that always looks busy? If so, I'll have to remember to check it out next year.

A BBQ sandwich sounds good to me, but do you also recommend the ribs? (my wife's favorite)

Sorry to hijack your log, Judge John!

No sweat, Andy.

Steve, I always had kids sent to me when they were good not just in trouble. I am sure you were sent to the principal's office for being a good little boy!

Lisa, thanks, I needed that. And I did get to the gym today!!! Oh, yeah! I will post my workout in a bit.

Why, You're Absolutely Correct sir.... ;-))
It was always the "others" that were acting up, not me.... I tried to tell this to the principal and the teachers but nobody would listen...

You know Steve, I had the same problem when I was a kid. I would get sent to the principal's office and I was always innocent. But Sister Florence Rose had her ways - hit first and ask questions later. Her hand and my head were well acquainted with each other.
