I was taught by Dominicans in grade school. The things they could do to you with a ruler I swear they could show cops new tricks with their night sticks. [hehe] CB

CB, I was taught by Dominicans too! I was a cut-up but never talked back or was nasty but they beat the hell out of me. A couple of them were good teachers but most of them were deranged. If they taught today, they would be put in prison! Oh, I could tell some stories!

Oh I remember the Dominicans also. I think they hated little boys. I told one once that when I grew up I was going to become a priest and I was not going to forget. Wrong thing to say.

6/6

Well, I made it to the gym today but it was a struggle. I am still congested but it is out of my chest and in my head. I stayed with 6x6 and made a couple of changes. I had to give myself a bit more time between sets - I stayed under 30 seconds for most sets but went over a little a few times when my breathing wouldn't allow me to continue. Strange side effect - no taste. I can't taste my food. Guess it will be easy to not snack!

Another side effect but a good one - while I was home sick I didn't feel hungry and I wanted to keep my cals down since I wasn't working out. I noticed that I had to go tighter on my belt about 1/2 through the week and then another notch by the end of the week. I weighed myself in the gym as I usually do and I had lost 6 pounds in one week! Yeah, I am sure I lost some size but the waist is down and that feels good.

Judge.....I know you've been away from the gym.....but, how do the 6x6 feel as compared to the 8x8......I asked CB the same question.....

How long did you stay on the 8x8.....I've been commited to it now for 2 1/2 weeks and plan on staying with it for 8 weeks before I change....is that about right?

Art,

I generally stay with a routine about 6 weeks. This is not a philosophy or a strict formula but it happens to be about when I go stale with a routine both physically and mentally. Sometimes I will go 5 weeks sometimes 8 weeks. It is by feel. After doing this for so long, I can tell when it is time for a change. I would suggest rather than picking a certain length of time, when you feel like going to the gym is becoming a burden, when you are easily distracted while there, when you come home and don't feel like you had a good workout, it is time for a change.

The 6x6 feels like a vacation compared to 8x8. You wouldn't think 2 more sets and 2 more reps would make such a difference but it is major. That is not to say that I don't expect improvements from 6x6 but mentally it is much less stressful. Also, with my breathing difficulties, 8x8 is quite taxing and 6x6 makes life easier.

What's next for me? I don't know yet but a new routine - different exercises, different equipment, different structure - brings enthusiasm and a fresh approach. When will I change it? When it's time.

Hope that answers your questions.

Yeah good new John about the waist..........sure wish that congestion would clear up for you...

I was thinking the 6x6 would be more difficult because of the increase in weight used for each movement...guess not.

I wish this congestion would clear up too, Art. This is lasting forever. My taste is gone - everything has no flavor. But this too shall pass.

As far as 6x6 being easier, I see your point but for me, resistance was never tough but breathing is with my asthma. 8x8 really taxes my breathing even when I am well so 6x6 is less stressful for me. But I will definitely revisit 8x8 down the road. It's a great routine.

I may add a third exercise to each or some bodyparts next week. Even with my cold, I felt I had a little more in the tank and could have had a bit more pump. Rest day tomorrow - golf.

Nah, no such luck. I used to have one in my home gym. I use an incline bench, lay face down and hang my arms down over the edge of it. The top of the bench is somewhat under my armpits. Great for hitting the top and the inclines work the lower. I often try to hit all areas.

Thanks Lori and CB. Dinner was great - salmon and a lobster tail on a bed of squash. Man, it was good!

Andy, I will check out the name of it later this week when I go. It is plate loaded with an angled base. There are curved pads that go around your shoulders and back and the movement is at a natural angle up and back. Takes pressure off the traps and seems to cause less pain for my knees and lower back since the back is supported.

Back and Abs

Lat Machine Pulldowns to front with a neutral grip bar

165/6/6 (increased weight by 15 lbs.)

Close Grip Cable Rows

155/6/6 (increased weight by 5 lbs.)

Hyperextensions

Decline Knee-Ups (highest incline)

12/12/12/12/10/8

I substituted this exercise for the Hanging Leg Raises after reading IronMan Online. They orginally felt that Hanging Leg Raises were the best (I did also). But they changed their mind since there is no stress at the extended (bottom) of the movement. They felt now that Leg Raises with bent knees on a decline would be more effect so I thought I would try it. MAN! They were brutal. Several gym members have asked me about the hanging leg raises over the past few weeks when they see me doing them. Now a member came over and asked me about this one and tried them and cried out in pain! They are great!

Hammer Crunches

100/6/6

Reverse Crunches on Flat Bench

15/6

Andy, tomorrow is leg day and I will try to remember to look at the name of the squat machine.

I have always felt that leg raises were the best. Actually I call them V-ups, done slow. I did these for martial arts for years and made my students do them. Many of my students grew up to be superior athletes in their high school sports, I believe because of the exercises I taught them and because of the hand/foot/eye coordination learned from martial arts.

I do hanging leg raises because they're easier for me and I get lazy...

Steve, On an incline bench (decline, if you will), they are awesome! I keep my heels from touching the ground so there is constant tension from bottom to top. Brutally good!

200/6/6

Seated Leg Curl Machine

145/6/6

Hammer V-Squat Machine

285/6/6

Andy, asked for the name of the machine. It is a Hammer (one of my favorite companies) and called a V-Squat. The unit weighs 55 lbs. without weights so I added that this time for a more correct amount of resistance. I usually don't add bars and collars because it makes it easier for me to calculate being that I am math deficient.

Seated Calf Machine

140/20/6

Cybex Rotary Calf Machine

220/12/6

Felt strong again today. Not having to breathe through congestion is sure a major part of my good feelings at the gym this week. I am also wondering if the liver tabs are part of it. I started them this week - 3 every 3 hours and had energy right to the end of my workout.

Chest and Biceps

Hammer Incline Bench Press

180/6/6

This was fun today. A young well-built guy asked if he could work in after I did a couple of sets. I said it would be fine if he could keep up since I rest less than 30 seconds between sets. He smiled and said ok. We alternated sets without any rest other than the other's set and man, it was brutal. We were goinng back and forth around 20 seconds. He really struggled with the last two sets and he did only 5 sets. I asked him if he wanted to work in on the rest but he declined. He came back while I was on the pec deck and said his chest was really pumped and the lactic acid during the sets was killing him. Before I left he again said that his chest felt like it would explode. Heh, heh. I still had two more exercises for chest before I was done. It takes time to get used to this type of routine but it is effective.

I've had a couple guys at the gym ask about my rest periods...
Gave me the chance to explain the 8x8 to them and the reason I was doing it.

They really don't always "get it" until they try it.... Good job John!
It's not "comfort training"...

Steve,

Most trainees understand that more resistance = more difficulty but they don't always know that there are many ways to increase the difficulty of an exercise and shortened rest periods is one of them. Oh baby, is it ever! I am actually enjoying 6x6 more than 8x8 right now. I find it mentally easier and can use a bit more weight. I still get the fat burning but I feel it is a bit more muscle building.

That's what is so great about what we do, Steve. We experiment on ourselves and learn and never learn it all. There are no secrets, there is no one way. There are many roads to success. The key is to find one that we want to travel on and go for it. I am sure I will re-visit 8x8 since I have used it many times in the past but, for now, I am enjoying my trip down the 6x6 road.

Meet you at the next intersection, bro.

BTW, having great endorphin rush tonight. Mmmmm . . .

6/21

Shoulders and Triceps

Today while doing rear delts face down on the incline bench, someone had turned the bench around so that I was facing the mirror. I could watch my delts swelling as they were engourged with blood. Years ago before my last shoulder surgery, I read much about shoulders and their injuries. I realized that years of bench and overhead pressing had caused a bad imbalance due to the fact that my front delts were large but my side delts were small and my rears were non-existant. This commom occurence with bodybuilders causes the shoulder girdle to push forward and makes the shoulder prone to injury. After the surgery and recuperation I worked my side and rear delts like a madman. I re-read Gironda who had said the same thing - forget front delts - they get enough work and the side delts make the shoulders wider and more impressive. Today I was enjoying watching the entire shoulder as a swollen "U" shape - side and rear delts no longer taking a back seat to their posterior brethren. After the upright rows, I have to say (without real embarrassment since IOL'er's know what I speak of) that I was getting off looking at my traps and delts in the mirror, veins pulsating, delts like slabs of meat slapped onto bone, now an equal trinity of muscle.

OK, now the workout . . .

Left shoulder was barking a little today in the joint. I am not sure if it from the shoulder workout or working against the tide at the beach yesterday or a combination of both. When I did my shoulder windmills which I do each time before my workout, they usually start with some pain and stiffness and then get better as movements proceed. Not this time. The left shoulder hurt more than usual and didn't want to loosen up. Hopefully, it is a temporary condition.

I hope so too. I was reading recently that Larry Scott prefers 6 x 6 and that Vince did so too. Vince thought that 6 x 6 was better for his body type and mental disposition and that he could recover better with it. He thought 8 x 8 was a little too hard on him.

yes i have posted that about Vince. He felt that 8x8 was for the gifted or pre contest. I never could do 8x8 for very long. Now if i lowered that to 8x5 I could do that forever, and still can. Vince did a 6x6 two day split. Upper then lower body.
It don't matter

Thanks guys! I hadn't read that but instinctively felt that 8x8 was great for short periods. I felt burned out after a few weeks. 6x6 is easier mentally and I feel like cajin - I can go with it longer. I am finishing my 3rd week and will certainly go for a few weeks further before changing.

My shoulder is better already, not totally but on the mend. I think the ocean after the hard shoulder routine may have been too much. The thing that concerned me was that it felt like joint and not muscle. Been there, done that!

I was able to increase weights on every exercise but seated calf. The squats gave me some knee pain so I have to keep an eye on that. I can use more weight but my knees are not what they used to be. Too many tons of squats have taken their toll.

I had to go to the endodontist on the way to the gym. I need two root canals! Crap! I have an apppointment for an emergency one on Monday. They are not sure of the time yet. I hope it is later so I can go to the gym before rather than after. Working out while the novacaine wears off is not fun. It will take at least two appointments to get it done and the other one can't be done until September! These guys are busy! It will be wonderful to be without tooth pain for a change.

Good luck on those root canals Judge, you'll do fine. I've had a couple and the dentist was so gentle I fell asleep on him. Glad the shoulder is better today.

Thanks Cajin, it's always reassuring to know when my memory serves me correctly. I recall you sharing this with us now and think I've read it other places too recently. I do better with 6 x 6, 6 x 8 or 3 trisets of 3 x 8, 9 sets total or 2 giant sets of 4 exercises x 8 reps than I do 8 x 8 straight sets.

Thanks, CB. I've had a couple root canals in the past. Actually, one of these that I'm having trouble with is one that had been done before. The endodontist said this particular tooth can have an extra canal at times. Other than some pain afterwards for a day or so, it wasn't bad so I'm not concerned. I would rather get to the gym before though so I don't workout with the novacaine wearing off.

8 sets is tough although I can easily do many more with several exercises. But when you are keeping the rest so short, 8 sets is tough. However, it is still a great routine for some lean gains and fat loss over a short period. Like you guys, I can't keep going with 8x8 for long.

You know Steve, I am fanatical about brushing and flossing. Get professional cleaning every three months, too. No flouride in the water for us though. My daughters have had one cavity between them. I had more than you could count without a calculator as a kid.

My kids lucked out in the cavity department too, unlike their dad. My last root canal worthy abscess was about ten months ago. Pure joy.

Just to add my two cents on two of the subjects above:
I max out on 8x8 at five weeks. Even at just two exercises per bodypart, that would be sixteen sets. Using 6x6 for a total of twelve sets would be more doable for an eight or twelve week cycle. Thanks for the insight.
After reading the Ironman newsletter, I've traded the hanging leg raises for the declines too. Always felt awkward doing the hanging stuff, especially side to sides, which caused me to swing too much. The declines are great. Try supersetting them with medicine ball incline crunches. Two supersets and you're done. Yikes!

I have seemed to adjust to the decline raises already and will look to increase resistance in a week or two. Other than a medicine ball between my feet, I am not sure how I will accomplish that. I already use the highest incline. Holding a dumbbell between my feet won't work - hurts too much. I wish I had my old "iron shoes" that held a dumbbell bar within the "sole" of the shoe. I haven't seen a pair in a commercial gym ever.

Iron shoes????? I haven't seen them since the early 70s. My first workout buddy bought a pair. Must have been 1962. Gosh, we're old!

Hey, put the medicine ball between your knees, and do the declines with your legs bent. Just don't zone out and drop the medicine ball, unless you want to sing soprano for a few days.

LOL!!! Yeah, we keep showing our age don't we, Al? I always do the knee ups with knees bent but the thought of dropping that medicine ball is not s pleasant thought. I have been accused of being a "Soprano" but not singing like one.

You can't be showing your age that much, if the young guys can't keep up with you.

The studs in my gym ask me things like "What can I do to keep from puking as much as you do?" and build my ego with "How come you whine so much, old fella? Here are some 5 lb dumbells. Why don't go over to that skinny 14 year old girl over there and ask her how to use them, so you don't hurt yourself?"

Al, there's nothing better than putting a young stud in his place. We still have some gas in the tank, huh?

Had my root canal today. Another appointment in about a month to finish it off and then another tooth to be done in September. Had the root canal after my workout so that was good. I am on vicodan's tonight. These things don't seem to do much for me. Most people get stoned but I don't feel anything but they pain isn't too bad, considering the doc said it had a lot of work done. He did 3 1/2 of the 4 canals today. Seems like I was in the chair for well over an hour.

Like Toby Keith sings, "I might not be as good as I once was but I'm as good once as I ever was". Glad your root canal went well. I'm one that vicodin does wonders for, knocks out every ache and pain I have every where.

CB,

I like that song lyric! Have to remember that one.

I don't know why but I am resistant to painkillers and other drugs. When I was in college, it took me most of my measly part time pay check to join others in merriment on weekends. When I have had tests and others are knocked out with a shot, I am wide awake and talking to the doctors. It's not a good thing! He told me not to drink alcohol with the vicodin so I had to drink water with dinner tonight instead of my glass of wine. I know damn well it wouldn't have mattered. It says not to operate machinery while on the meds. Well, tomorrow I will be working out after taking my pills and I am sure I won't feel a thing.

I have to make sure I don't have too much gas in my tank when I'm doing leg raises. I'd elaborate if I weren't such a gentleman.

If you don't need the vicodan, feel free to mail the rest to me. I can add it to the other various and sundry accoutraments (aka stash) I have on hand for my quarterly "Back to the Sixties Celebration."

Impressive workouts, especially the pec deck poundage. What's your bodyweight?

Al, bodyweight fluctuates right now between 210-214. Weighed 213 today.

Laree, thanks but actually it hasn't been too bad. I wouldn't even call it pain, more like discomfort. I didn't take the vicodin this morning because I didn't want it affecting my gym performance. I took the first one today about 2 hours ago and I do feel a bit "off" right now. I won't take another until ready for bed tonight. WIth my asthma med, it is a real knockout before bed.
