So I take it you have it turned off most of the time ? hehe. I have the active handling turned off most of the time [it's a real kill joy] so the computer doesn't cut power to the engine and apply brakes when I gun it and the tires start spinning and smoking.

Not great. I use the hard brace made by the OT and also keep the bars on the outside of my palm. The problem was more with the shrugs. I used straps but they didn't help much. I can't use the thumb and it really weakens the grip only using fingers. Fortunately, my traps grow faster than any other muscle group and don't need much stimulation. I may have to use lighter weights and more reps. Although I am sure it won't help, I ordered the Emu oil from Donb's friend and will try that when it arrives.

Yes, Lori, it really sucks. Today and yesterday were bad days. When it gets too much, I take some ibuprofen and it helps. The pad of the thumb is starting to swell. I know I will need the surgery but I want to hold off as long as possible. I fear that it will limit my training even more than now and I can't have that! I think your job must really be tough on this condition. Can you wear a brace while you work dough? Do you have to knead or is it done by machine? Movement is good for arthritis but not stressful movement. Also, ice will lower pain and inflammation. Heat can bring mild relief as well. But I am afraid that nothing will "cure" it. I don't think most people realize how important the thumb is for everyday tasks as well as our training.

Hang in there! Trust me - I feel your pain!

I can wear the brace to do the dugh side but not to decorate...it frustrates me badly..and today my mood was not the best so just went without it and I could tell a big difference...the pain factor was awful!!...I am having a problem with it getting stinky...found out that you should just hand wash it ..so I'll see if that works(I was afraid it would fall apart)..What do you do??...Thanks for all your knowledge on the subject..it really helps!!!:-)

Man, Lori, I would imagine that you must draw a crowd when you decorate those cakes. I heard of car washes like that but not bakeries! Sorry, I couldn't resist.

BTW, is your brace hard plastic? If so, you can wash it with dish soap by hand. You have to be careful with heat because it can change the shape. I was told not to leave it in the car in the summer. In Florida you really have to be careful about that.

My weight is up to 217 - a gain of 5 pounds in a month and with less body fat. This is terrific at this point of training for me. I am eating clean and the gains are actually more than 5 pounds of lean mass. However, I feel very tired and may not be recovering sufficiently. Also, this damn thumb is really bad the last week.

Dragging a little today in the gym. Had to run several errands before going and lots on my mind. I think that took some steam out of me. But I was able to increase reps on almost every set so I felt good. Tonight my boobs are hurting good!

Hey Judge,
I've never done Atkins but the cyclical low carb like Gironda or Metabolic with the carb up meal every 72 hours really works great for me anyway. Once I got fat adapted at maintenance calorie levels I was on my way.

Good one today! Carbed up with oatmeal and protein powder for breakfast and then ate a Oh, Yeah bar right before the workout (it is a candy bar with some added protein - not great nutrition but fast acting and tastes damn good!) I added reps to just about every set across the board. My pecs are still sore from yesterday and now my lats feel like wings. Ahhhh - good pain. I had to skip the shrugs. My thumb cannot deal with holding the weights, even with straps. It has been nasty lately, so I gave it a break. Also, traps grow fast for me and I can skip them occasionally without a problem.

CB, I'm afraid outside of a miracle, the thumb will not heal. It is degenerated and the cartilege is gone and a bone spur has grown. All the supplements have not helped. Surgery is the only option and I will wait as long as possible to have that since the operation sounds nasty and I am not sure about the result. All these many years of heavy lifting has taken its toll. The body parts are literally wearing out.

Lou, My asthma started when I was around 40! I have been hospitalized twice but you deal with it. It is definitely worse during fall (the worse) and spring. This is my first spring in NC so I was hoping it would be better. We'll see.

Lisa, thank you. Yes, we all have limitations - sickness, injuries, time, etc. We can use them as excuses or we can just deal with it. IOL members work through it.

Lori, that is incredible news! I am so happy for you! I have been on joint supps for quite a few years and they have helped my knees but not my thumb. Please keep me informed about your progress. I take the standard 1500/1200 dosage with added MSM. Maybe I should increase it.

3/14

Chest

Pre-Exhaust Super Set:

Dumbbell FLyes

45/12; 55/12; 65/11; 65/9

Incline Dumbbell Presses

55/12; 65/12; 75/7; 75/5

Cable Crossovers

60/12; 70/12; 70/12; 85/7

I lost my new inhalor that I had in my gym bag. Damn! Asthma made it tougher than usual today. I probably left it in the gym on Friday. It often falls out os my pocket and I sometimes leave it on the floor. I still have another but I have to try to call the doc in NY for a new script so I can get more.

Good workout today anyway. I got a couple of compliments from two trainers today and that pushed me through the breathing problems. Still not too old for compliments (heh, heh).

Judge could you briefly describe pulley pullovers. I too use alot of pre-ex but am not familiar with that movement.

Sure - you can use a tricep rope, although I use a small straight bar. Use a close overhand grip, if you use the straight bar. Face the pulley mcahine. Stand back so that there is tension on the cable. Keep your elbows either locked out or with a slight bend but do not change the angle as you bring the bar/rope down until the hands reach your thighs. It is vital not to change the bend in your elbows throughout the movement.

This works the lats without involving the biceps. Then the pulldowns use biceps to assist the lats after they are exhausted by the pullovers.

If you have any other questions, just PM me.

3/17

Shoulders and Arms

Pre-Exhaust Super Set:

Dumbbell Laterals

20/12; 25/12; 30/12; 30/11

Seated Dumbbell Presses

35/12; 40/12; 45/10; 45/2 - felt a "pull" in my left tricep

Rear Delt Flyes on Incline Bench

20/12; 25/12; 25/12; 30/7

Pre-Exhaust Super-Set:

Alternate Dumbbell Curls

30/12; 35/12; 35/11

Close Grip Assisted Chins

100/11; 100/9; 100/7

Pre-Exhaust Super Set:

Cable Pushdowns

130/15; 160/12; 170/8

Cable Pressdowns

130/15; 160/8; 170/6

Had to limit reps and sets on triceps due to the slight injury I felt when pressing. The upper tricep kept cramping. Wish I had someone to massage it. I am icing it right now. Hopefully, it will be back to normal in a day or two.

Judge thanks for the description. I used to do a similar movement but I called them stiff arm pulldowns. Have you ever tried d.b. pullovers to pre-ex.

Yes, but since I am doing cable work for the follow-up exercise, it is best to use the cable for the compound exercise. I might use DB pullovers with rowing movement as a free weight pre-exhaust super set.
