I had a little time on my hands so I decided to implement some work I picked up in school and from some videos I've seen. Scott Sonnnn does a shoulder stretch here that I did today.

3 Rounds
20 side lunge, 10 R/10 L
20 Rolling Shoulder Slides 10R/10L

Bird Dog, 5R/L 5 sec hold each
3 X Supine Lying Lions Breath to situp
5 Deadbug Reach for the toes

7 Rounds

5 X Swing 32kg KB
10 X Push-Up
5 X Squat Clean 24kg KB
2 X Pull-Up
16:10mins

Feeling really good with the progress overall with mobility, strength, conditioning, and even some changes in the physique.

Trying to include mobility and stability work to get things started.

3 Rounds
20 side lunge, 10 R/10 L
20 Rolling Shoulder Slides 10R/10L

Bird Dog, 3R/L 10 sec hold each
3 X Supine Lying Lions Breath to situp
5 Deadbug Reach for the toes

6 Rounds

2 X Snatch R/L + 1 press 24kg KB
3 X Pull-Up
5 X Squat Clean 24kg KB
12 X Push-Up
17:00mins

Changed the order to try and get more pushups in. The presses with the KB reduce the pushups ability. I kinda massaged the presses and pushups closer to how I feel I want to work the shoulder.

Squat Cleans are magic. Incorporating those really get the motor going big time. I can start breathing heavier in the first set.
Increased the pullups. They are really coming along big time. The Lions Breath to situps and deadbugs I think are really priming the core for these it feels like. I'm feeling lighter to pullup and I'm not losing weight at all. I can feel the grip at the core and the pull is getting easier.

I'm going to try and run with this until winter break. See if I can really drive some body changes and make some progress with mobility.

A repeat of one from last week. This one is kind of a perfect routine. Very full body.

3 Rounds
20 side lunge, 10 R/10 L
20 Rolling Shoulder Slides 10R/10L

Bird Dog, 2R/L 30 sec hold each
3 X Supine Lying Lions Breath to situp
5 Deadbug Reach for the toes

7 Rounds

5 X Swing 32kg KB
10 X Push-Up
5 X Squat Clean 24kg KB
3 X Pull-Up
20 mins

Added a rep to the pullups and they all came out solid. Foundation continues to get stronger. Really enjoying how things are coming together at this time.
I was more deliberate with this session, nothing rushed. A good consistent pace all the way through.

I've been feeling a bit drained from everything going on. I didn't want to put in this day but it was necessary. Things are coming to a head for the end of the semester. I seem to be better under pressure and I put things off until the last minute. I feed off that juice it seems like.

I tried for an abbreviated version of what I have been doing. It kind of worked and kind of didn't. I like how it didn't, though.

10 x Cossak Lunge 5R/5L

3 Rounds

10 X KB Swing 32kg
20 X Pushup
10 X Squat Clean 24kg
5 X Pullup

17:30mins

I tried less rounds with more reps. Holy moly. It seemed to be less work and go by faster but that was not the case. The work did seem less but the lagging effect of the work lasted longer. I ended up with the side ache on the last round. The huffy puffy started on the first round. The last set of pullups got 3 partials on the last reps.

This was easier for what seemed like less work but it really wasn't at all, not even time-wise. The cardio was better as well. This might stay in rotation. (maybe technically less on the reps for some movements but still, it wasn't)

I got some lab work. My eGFR is 60%, Creatinine is a touch high 1.28, and my TSH 4.72. I poked around about those numbers, damn google and your instant answers.

Of course until I looked them all up and crossed checked some information a few times I started to get the picture when I read one article associate higher than normal creatinine with............intense workouts. Well D'uh, TSH will be a touch high, and Creatinine. I didn't think to tell her about my workouts because I read her off all my sups. I guess she didn't get the picture, I mean, everybody must take amino acid tabs? I think she missed the cues on that one. And I didn't think about telling her I workout pretty good. I mean, not like Al and JD good, but they aren't exactly walks in the park...

I was kind of angered into a mood to workout and this popped out of the workout calculator in my head.

2 x 20 Cossak Squat 10R/10L
2 x 20 Shoulder rolls/glides 10R/10L

3 Rounds

10 X Swing 32kg KB
2 X Snatch+2Press R/L
4 x Pullup
10 x Squat Clean 25kg KB
20 x Pushup (last set 10, 5, 3, 1, 1)
16:40mins

I forgot but I'm kind of glad I did. The presses with the snatch make my triceps smoked by the last set of pushups. I wouldn't have thought that, but yeah, straight fails, 5 fail, 3 fail, pause 1, pause, 1. Whew! It was neat.

Those Squat Cleans are straight up conditioning squats. MAN! I hate them and love them at the same time. You get that ugh feeling when you step to them, but when you're done you're like BOOM. Then proceed to suck wind. Got the side ache again from the heavy breathing. It's a good one.

I'm not really rating these workouts because they're kinda not exactly what I like to do for a workout. This is more kind of fitness but it seems like my body really likes these right now for the short work and effective shape changing on the body. I'm actually starting to look good. If I can get my tummy to go away the V on the back will really really stand out.

Looking good Leo. I also have/had high creatine levels, which led me to stop adding creatine sup to my diet. I came to realize I don’t need it, especially if it may do me harm.

Hey thanks, JD! I ran out of the creatine sup I was taking about a month ago. And I'm just barely over baseline which I think kind of lines up with good workouts. I was thinking of adding again until this popped up, and now your words as well. So yeah I'm going to pass on supplementing, I'm getting enough in my diet.

Thanks for your words, man, I really appreciate it.

I might actually try and ask her about running bloodwork without me training for a couple of weeks. Maybe I'll do long walks instead. But the main thing is to see if the training correlates directly with my creatinine levels. This would be a nice thing for me, but for my doctor to see as well. The eGFR and TSH as well.

That sounds great, Diablo.
Coach Sonnons work is awesome. Like DD, one of a kind. The shoulder movement was in his "Into Flow" prgm at the beginning of 2000. Check his new site TACFIT.

Training wisely rather than just hard. You gotta ask yourself why you do things the way you do and what your goals are, both long term and short term. They need to align.

All the best!

Been going through it pretty hard with school. Secured a Letter of Recommendation from one of the more hard professors, he likes me.

Not enough activity and too many calories lately, I've picked up a few pounds. I'm ok with it. It's temporary, I'm not off the rails just a bit sideways for the moment. The upside is making cookies with my favorite people on earth, my babies. Cooking and taking care of them is stressful and joyful at the same time. Inventing sweet potato cookies with them, priceless and fattening lol

Today's activity was a bit of activity before going to one of my last classes for the semester. I've gotten a lot out of the class, it's the structural biomechanics class that I picked up Sonnen from. A lot of mobility stuff, I dig it man.

Untimed 3 rounds

5 x Pullup
10 x Cossak Squat 5R/5L
20 x Pushup

Hips are starting to get more mobility. I'll need to keep after it if I want that good good squat form ATG.

Is this your doctoral program? Structural Biomechanics, it sounds intimidating.

My girls were laughing last summer when we were in Boise about a young man they went to high school with. He finished his B.S. with the plan of attending the Physician's Assistant program at Idaho State University. Idaho State has been known for their post graduate PT program. It is good. Apparently so is the PA program. Their friend received the "Thank You for Applying" letter in the mail.

So he applies at Columbia. You know, if you do not get accepted to your state college, try the Ivy League. He was accepted. What a hoot.

Bake those cookies! Study hard, spend time with those babies. Get whatever workout in you can. That is what makes kettlebells amazing. You only need one at the right weight.

Ditto on the kettlebells!!!

No, this is just the BS program for Kinesiology, I'll apply to the PT program next fall. PA programs take too long for my timeline. I hope to make it into the program here at Fresno, but if not I have a backup plan for a hybrid program at USC, which is sought after, so I hear.

Not very intimidating at all. It could be taught better, I'm a little better with drills over what the anatomical functions are. The way it's being taught is a little more practical so it's a bit detached from, this muscle is doing this, and this muscle is doing that. It's more here's a movement that engages these muscles and this is how we increase the mobility to them. In other words, the professor isn't teaching to the eventual test on the functions of the anatomical parts we're being tested on, he teaches to this is a movement that uses these parts. It's great info, but it makes it tough to do well on the exams, for me anyhow.

I'm baking away, sir! Thanks for checking in, Jon!

Don't I know it!!! It's one of those trigger things that once you get going it's just a bad snowball, in a day, maybe the next day, until the cookies are gone lol. So no more cookies baking for a while/until they come back lol

But yes, baking cookies is not the lifestyle, consistent workouts for health are. I do enjoy some variability/room for chaos. I get bored so when things go a little off it's often a sign that it's time for a change of some kind. Just as long as I keep good fuel in, and consistent physical exertion, I'm good for the long haul :)

I'm feeling pretty good on this last stretch of consistent work. I got some cool news the other day, I'll post it with today's work.

That mammoth is going down, baby!

Thank you so much, Pink!

Had a little time today, put in an ok workout.

I had that bloodwork, which indicated high TSH and Creatinine. I did some reading, those slightly elevated levels can occur due to high-intensity workouts. Those weren't the real concern, the real concern was the a high creatinine along with a lower eGFR is the issue. Low eGFR wants to indicate a decline in kidney function. For the recent test my doc asked for a different GFR estimate using Cystatin C, and now my eGFR lands in perfectly normal at 90. The eGFR using the creatinine input leaves room for this exact kind of error. All my other labwork is perfect and very horselike, as expected with good nutrition and regular exercise. The only thing is the high BP that I've had all my life. I just run at high pressure lol With the med they have me on my BP is perfect, 129/80 just a day ago. I can lose 20 pounds of course, and I wouldn't mind it. I'll let that be my thing to work on as a work in progress as we navigate this all.

On another note, I got tested in my sports physiology class with the Thorstenson test for the force of leg extension. This test measures the approximate composition of fast-twitch to slow-twitch muscle fibers. It seems I'm a born lifter with 70%+ fast twitch. On the chart of muscle compositions against sports performance applications, 70% exactly was the fast twitch correlation for weight lifting/olympic lifting. Hence, I have those round-looking muscle parts from a high composition of fast-twitch muscle fibers.

To the work today, a repeat but a good one with some of that added mobility work from my structural biomechanics class.

Shin box switches with hip thrust to squats, 3 in each direction

5 Rounds

10 X Swing 32kg
10 X Pushup
5 X Squat Clean 24kg
3 X Pullup
14:40

This was an easy-paced workout. I can feel a difference in the squat from the hip mobility warmup. I can dig it. I'm going to look up something similar for the shoulder. See if I can get a little roll around on the ground and warm up at the same time routine.

I've been a little low vibration lately. No real reason, maybe cause I have 4 jobs right now technically and I have to let go of at least one and I don't want to.
I made the best lentil soup today, the secret is thyme and cilantro, aside from copious amounts of fresh garlic and onion and a little sliced carrot, also one serrano pepper for some jump in flavor.

A bit of the same today with a skosh of a change. It was nice.

Shin box switches with hip thrust to squats

5 Rounds

10 X Swing 32kg
10 X Pushup
2 X Clean and Press R/L 24kg
5 X Supine Pullup
15:05

Tester with clean and press with the 32. It came up, and went up, nicely for a couple of singles on each side. I'm so stoked about this. I'm going to try and put those in as polish work now.

The clean and press with the 24 is almost easy now. This is what led to the tester with the 32. I can up the reps with the 24 clean and press.
Pushups I can increase the reps for 5 rounds as well.
5 supine pullups were almost easy. I did feel it a bit in my grip strength towards the last pulls. I held on for a pretty good static hold on the way down from my last rep, held on with a 90 at the elbow for a good 15-20 seconds.
Only thing I don't like about this routine is it doesn't have leg work. If I wanted to keep this one as a rotation I think I'd want a leg focused day somehow. Maybe mix in cossak squats, Bulgarian Splits and Goblet Squat Cleans for a day but that would be brutal as hell. This is an idea because I like the flow of today's work. I could have gone for more rounds but I was in a bit of a time crunch.

I've been building up to this one way or another. Either through frustrations of all sorts, some kind of malaise associated with those frustrations, gleaming at my life from outside and thinking about the direction I want it to go, trying to enjoy life, knowing what I'm capable of, knowing exercise physiology, knowing my diet.

All that to say I am indeed trying to slay several animals at once. I've laid out a lot of traps and they all have something in them. Today I collect on a cumulative of consistent work, increase in strength, sufficient rest, and nutrition is ok.

In fact, I thought I gained weight because I've had a few off-track streaks of eating without control. Today I find myself at 207, which is really a comfort. Start of the year I'm going to change up my approach and make a hard press to get under 200 in a healthy way. We'll see how it goes.

A repeat of last week's work but like I said, I've been setting my sight on something, TEN ROUNDS. I paced myself differently. Instead of going kill mode which probably would have had me not be able to complete the reps of the last sets, I had a moderate pace that had me dripping sweat around round 5. I was in gear to conquer, and I did. I'm not trying for cardio but the consistent work gets the rate up. I should be in the 50/50, anaerobic/aerobic, oxidative metabolism. That's the idea anyhow. Burning fat and glucose is the aim there. I also fasted today for this one.

Shin box switches with hip thrust to squats. 5 hip tucks(try to touch forehead to knee) to thrust at the shin box before switching over to the other side to do the same and then to squat. These are changing my squats completely. The hip is opening up and I'm feeling a lot better about my squats.

10 Rounds

10 X Swing 32kg
10 X Pushup
5 X Squat Clean 24kg
5 X Supine Pullup
55:50 mins

This took a while longer than usual by three times but the work was double and also tougher with the supine chins. The pullups are blowing up by biceps, that was totally not expected but hey, kinda sweet! lol

At the end I realized I did 100 pushups, which I haven't done since I was in my early 30's. I did 50 Squat cleans and 100 swings with 32kg. 50 pullups?!! Yes, yes and every one of them was chin to bar.

Later while buying groceries I had funny cramps on the rear delt/teres muscles that was hurting and messing me up when trying to type my PIN lol that was funny.

This is the most work I've done a long time that was not heavy lifting but consistent good effort for a long period of time at nearly an hour.

Very solid day. I could have gone longer but it's good I didn't. I'm feeling my coccyx area and the glutes pretty good.

Love the way you're attacking the multiple approach, Leo. That has been my m.o. during the majority of mesocycles over the past three years. Conditioning soared, and body recomp was successful, as long as I didn't overdo the cheat meals.

Ditto.

Just stick to it. If you slip, forgive yourself and return immediately to your Path. If going gets hard, keep the big perspective.
Imagine yourself at the end of your life and ask yourself- what did I do with my life? The important things will shine in neon.

Well done so far, these last years, you are lifting yourself in bootstraps.

Thank you, Al, and Pixie!

New Year rekindle the focused approach. Financial aide will be buying me a new food scale that connects to my phone so I can weigh out calories! This will be huge for me so I can portion out a week at a time, or at least a few day.

I have new jobs, one gives me 20,000 steps in one shift, I have this one 2 times a week. The other gives about 8000 steps a day and that is once a week.

I’ll be going to campus 5 times a week as well. My schedule will be packed this semester, like the last. I found that I have more success when I have a lot to do in a day instead of nothing to do in a day. So the workouts will be like last semester, short, sweet, powerful and effective.

I’ve been having moderate to low activity. I think another one of my past existences I was a bear. The cold seems to make me want to hibernate. Lol Besides the 20k in steps I also get in pullups at work and I’m getting pretty good. There’s hot corworkers around so I have to be strong with those :P

I’ve returned to IF, and with the scale and limited times accross the board things are looking very much up up up. Fish, chicken breast, veggies, potatoes and rice are going to be my main staples.

That’s the short of it. More latest news is another 4.0 semester from 16 Units, this semester I’ll be taking 18 units. I’ll apply to doctorate program in the Fall.

All ahead, Full

Great!

Future plans sound awesome. You know how goes: One day at a time. If a mistake happens, next time you just do it right and continue on the right path. I wish you the best on your Hero's journey.

PS
Are you still in Fresno? There were pics in NYT of some land slides from there. If so, stay safe.

Thank you, Pink!
Yes, still in Fresno. Those were on the East side some miles away. This is a pretty big valley and there are lots of rivers and streams everywhere. The flatter areas on the west sides were hit the worst I think. Especially out toward the bay areas, even down South.

This week I'll return to some weights. This and next week the routine will settle in for how much time I have on my hands.

I seem to do better when I have a million things to do as opposed to nothing to do. When I have nothing to do I seem to just go comatose.

Well, it’s been a while in the coming. Today was a little play and work. I started out cleaning my room. Went to the garage because I have a 35lb KB and I wanted to do something a little volume oriented that was a new movement for a sustained effort. The 24kg 200 snatch in ten minutes has tickled my brain for a long time. That’s what brought the idea of the 35lb bell to mind. So, let’s see what I can do in a little circuit to build up some work capacity.

5 Rounds 35lb KB
10 Snatch R/L
10 Half Kneeling KB Press R/L
10 Goblet Squat
17:30 minutes

WOW the last two rounds had me dripping in sweat and the last round had me huffin! The form the the snatch definitely kept getting better and more dialed in. My left gets a little out of control, the bell is a little light and it really whips way high. The right has just about perfect control. I could have gone for more rounds but my hands started to hurt in the pads at the base of the fingers where the callus is already built a little. I figured I was pretty done anyhow. I had a few warm up snatch seshes during the evening before I went for this, I was cleaning my room and started whipping away kinda testing the water for how deep I wanted to go.
Half Kneeling press was kind of perfect. I didn’t bring it down to rack position, I brought the bell down to about a 90 at the elbow and left it under tension to press again. My left is weak and it wants to separate I can feel. The fix I found that really took that away big time, grip the handle like I wanted to get juice from it. This tightened up the whole chain and the unease in the shoulder went away completely.

On a separate note, I might take a CSCS course and get certified. If I don’t get into the PT program either here at state or at USC I’ll be a trainer for a little bit and see what I can do. With a minor in nutrition I think I can help some people while I wait to get into a program.

My scale came in, I have the meal prep containers. It’s time to grab a gear. I’ve been loosely weighing a meal at a time each day as I have time to do so. This Sunday I’m going to take a shot at setting up a week of food in the fridge. I’m thinking of setting up the little prep boxes by the calories individually so I know when I grab, I have 3 sizes, one I know exactly how many calories I’m about to eat no matter what is inside. This is theory, we’ll see what pans out, I can see just setting up meals in one container and just knowing what the container has as a whole.

Well this phuckin sucks man. Literally one of the very only things consistent in my life is this forum, I can’t say it more strictly than that. Literally the only thing that keeps me going a lot of times is just doing something to write down here and talk with all the awesome people here. I thought I lost my purpose before when I lost my family, but this is a different level, this is the only place where it’s the me inside that gets to really just come out of the jar.

I came here a year after my gastric bypass. I was around 330 pounds. I lost a whole person of weight around 150 pounds. Got down to 178 at my lowest and I was a very solid muscley man. I gained weight back and I’ve been up and down and I’m stable today at 210 or so. I’m trending down over the last year or so.

I’ve been through a divorce since starting to post here.
I found love
I had kids
I left my job with California DOT working in the design department
I built my own business
My business collapsed and took my family with it
I was homeless and had no purpose in life
I found myself again a few years ago deciding to go back to school
Now I’m a semester away from graduating with honors Bachelors of Kinesiology Exercise Science
I’m applying to graduate school this Fall

Through all that, this has been here, every time, every time, it survived all my turmoil, depression, alcoholism, despair. Like some kind of virtual rock in the nethers of the internet cosmos, steady, solid and full of support.

I already feel lost again similar to when I lost my family and business. This is a real blow.

Feeling the same here Leo, We go back a long way man. I remember you joining here, then when you were away for some time I'm like saying 'I need to go find my mate Diablo' :-)

We need to stay in touch, maybe start a page where we can still log our workouts and stay connected.

Hang in there Leo. I've found a couple of other forums of similarly like minded folks, danjohnuniversity.com and bewellandstrong.com. Both sites are by subscription but have free trials and some content accessible without a membership. You can check out the free stuff and try the free trials to see if one might work for you. If there's enough interest maybe we could set up an IronOnlineOrphans mailing list or something.

Oh, Leo! I’m so sorry! Your post sent me into a crying jag, with a full range of emotions from high to low and back again.

After 25 years of doing this, I really need to be done worrying about software and related forum issues, but if anyone here finds or builds an alternative group you move to, I’ll support it wholeheartedly.

Oh man.. Leo.. this post has hit the nail on the head.

I don't think I've met a single person on the site, but I feel like a lot of them are sort of family.

This site is unique in that we've all been through a ton of life stuff and nobody judges anyone.

The most supportive site on the internet.
