After reading Henriks excellent article on Vic and Sergio I wanted to know who the Barbarian Bro's were....More importantly what their workouts looked like. Now I've been mucking around with Google for the last half hour and have drawn a blank....

Anyone got anything to offer?

The Barbarian brothers, Peter and David Paul right? The only thing I remember is from reading their stories in the mags and some of their movies, few but for the muscle value pretty good, acting, not so good. They were the guys that went into the gym with plaid shirts, construction boots and lifted God awful weight, mostly HIT style. They inspired me to push myself when I was a kid. I remember a lot of my buddies wore construction boots while working out because of them and that was before the fashion was to where the boots in school! Here is a bit of neat coincidences, I have friends that are also twins with the same last name, Derek and Dwayne Paul, Derek is more close of a friend and he worked out and his brother did not, in fact most people could only tell who was who because Derek had the obvious physique.

Ok back to the Barbarians, I read they traditionally started with HIT, however as they were being publicized they became part of the Weider machine and so they had articles of them doing the Weider principles in the mags, which when I think about it now, kind of disappoints me because I liked their attitudes in the gym, ripped shirts, bandanas and construction boots. Was kind of cool, when I was a teenager!

They were (are?!) brothers Peter and David Paul. Known for wearing jeans, hiking boots, socks pulled up over their jeans, long-sleeve flannel shirts and feather earrings (don't ask), oh yes, all this while TRAINING. They were big...in more ways than one...in the early '80s.

Strong as hell and used to reverse grip bench 500 lbs, behind the neck 315lbs, "stack" most any machine WITH the other brother standing on top of the stack, etc. Huge weights. Think Ray & Mike Metnzer without the polish.

A very detailed and fun site on them is:

Glad to help. You might check to see if the video store has any of their movies on VHS or DVD, not great films but interesting to see them on video as opposed to still photos. Double Trouble has David Carradine (Kung Fu, Kill Bill); Bill Mumy (Will Robinson on Lost In Space in the 60s), James Doohan (Scotty on the original Star Trek) and Roddy MacDowall (original Planet of the Apes movie and TV series, etc.) They probably have the best physiques in The Barbarians.

Joseph Horrigan who used to write a sports medicine column for Ironman magazine mentioned in a column on neck training that he told one of the brothers it was a bad idea to be using something like 350 lbs for neck exercises.

They were a cross between a bodybuilder and a powerlifter.

They were big, but not big enough to win any bodybuilding contests and strong, but not strong enough to win any major powerlifting contests.

Simply put they were a bit of a novelty act that never caught on in the major media, but they did try...

Read somewhere that they used to slap each other hard on the face and spit at each other's faces just to pysche themselves for some big lifts...interesting characters, catching the media glaze ..and then they passed into oblivion...

Hey thanks for the links Quartermass. I did note that they are working on a film to be released in 2005 called Souled Out. We may want to keep an eye out for that one heh ?

I remember those guys too...they were big and not so bright, but had great lifting skills and inspired me to stay in the gym along with other TRUE legends like Zane, Arnold, Columbo. Sure, they were more of a marketing gimmick due to being twins, but they were serious lifters for sure.
