Hi Everyone,

My name is Kevin and I'm also one of the lurkers who come and read all the posts. I'm 38 years old and have been reading the posts here since the new forum started. I started my quest two years ago when I was 230lbs, 6 ' 2" and had to hold my breath to tie my shoes(that is when I said enough). I have tried alot of various training plans and am currently doing two workouts a week ala Dr. Ken style, I find this type of routine works for me and my busy schedule. I am currently 199lbs and in the best shape of my life, I still have a ways to go.

I don't post very much on the forum since I feel I am still new and learning, so I just read all the posts and try to incorporate new ideas into my diet and training.

I have made good gains in my weights, sticking mainly to squats, deads, dips and chins for my main lifts. Diet is in order, six meals a day with chicken, tuna, salmon, cottage cheese, yogurt, oats and veggies.

Hello everyone! My name is Julie... Nice to meet you all... Thanks to a friend I have been reading the newsletter for the last few months... I have done two BFL challenges and this past Monday I started a BFFM challenge...

2 1/2 years ago I weighed 278lbs, 43% bodyfat, and a size 26pants and 3X shirt... to date, I am 174'ish lbs, 18%bodyfat, wear size 6/8 pants and small/medium shirts... Here is my webpage and story if interested.... http://www.geocities.com/j050496/

I have another current pic but can't get it to post for some reason... Hopefully soon though...

Before I get boo'ed I lost my weight following the Atkins plan and working out... I am currently upping my carbs and lowering my fat but it is a hard and slow transition... I know I can do it though!!

This challenge is the first that I am not in the gym 6-7 days a week... I am doing a 4 day routine wtih 3 different sets of exercise... If you want to know what my routine is I can post it... I am sure it is not the best but the last two days of workouts have rocked... I am sore in places that I haven't been sore at in a long time... I think I was ready to move up a notch and so glad I did...

Okay I will shut up for now!

By the way I am in Illinois, close to St. Louis, MO...

Hopefully I will get to know some of you soon!!

Wow. Thank you so much for the nice welcome.

jej - Ballet plies and squats may look similar, but I was amazed by how different they were. Because I was so familiar with ballet plies, I expected squatting to be relatively easy. I was off by a mile! To begin with, ballet dancers are always told to keep their weight on the balls of their feet. In several ballet plies, the heels come up off the floor. When I began doing squats, I was using ballet form, and I nearly wrecked my knees until an instructor informed me that I was supposed to be pushing down through my heels when squatting. Using turnout in ballet is another matter too. But the quality of the movement and the resistance is so similar.

Larry - Yes, weight training exercises and a ballet barre do have a lot in common. I'm sure that that's what got me hooked on weight training. Also, my prayers are with you, your wife, and your family. I hope that your wife is comfortable. It is so awesome that you raised so many foster children.

Barbara J. - I hear you and I enjoy reading your journal. Sometimes I prefer to learn just by being quiet and absorbing. Now that I've said that, watch me start posting like a madwoman. ;-)

Judge - Thank you so much for your kind words. And yes, I hear you about being inspired by others who are just getting started. I feel that way about my kids all the time. It's always great to witness when anyone takes a first step toward achieving something that's important to them. In the end, it's all about the journey, not necessarily the destination. As for Brooklyn, I've lived here all my life and I don't know if I could ever leave. I love the change of seasons and I even love the snow. When I do dream about leaving, it's always to go north! ;-)

Truer words. In one of Dave's books he writes about spiralling downward vs. spiralling upward, and how training can set off an upward spiral which could wind up bringing one toward practicing better nutrition (my personal Achilles heel), taking a better attitude toward work, treating others with more respect, etc., until the overall quality of life is improved. I definitely think of the posts that I read on this board as contributing to the upward spiral.

Helen - That'll teach me to get beyond my shyness. I hope that you had fun in NYC. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to introduce myself sometime in the future. I wish that I could go to Bash this year (especially when I read that Bill Pearl will be there!) but it's not in the cards. And I don't think that you've missed your calling. The dance world can always use a good choreographer!

Fitchik - When I went back to look at the captions on the photos in the gallery, I realized that it was you whom I saw. Sorry for mixing up your name! And thanks for the nice welcome. Your transformation is absolutely inspiring and I always look forward to reading your journal.

Elke - Hello fellow Noo Yawka, and thanks for the encouragement!

Stingo - Hi there! And yes, the Mid City Gym event was definitely one of last year's highlights for me.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. You guys are awesome. And hello to the rest of you who just put up a first post. I can't wait to go back and read them all.

Best,
Karen V.

I guess I will introduce myself,
I have been lifting for about five years now, more or less. I had to deal with a health problem that kept me out of exercising of any type for about a year, and am now starting over. I have a long road, but know new things to help guide me. I am 22 and going for Exer. & Sports Sci. I want to be a Strength Coach when I am done. I wish my college would get off the aerobic benefit teachings and spend some time on strength and conditioning, but they don't. I have been a fan of Dave's for about 3 years now, reading his newsletter daily. I missed his BISS book signing tour when it came to my area. And I didn't go to the bash in NYC, both not too far from my house. I am currently trying to be a base level of strength with goals of competing in strongman competitions, but for now play all types of contact sports. I'm sure I'm leaving something out, but am not sure what now.

40 years old, and have lifted, on and off, for about 16 years. Live in western KY, USA, Earth with my wife.

Found this site a couple of years ago because of Dan Martin over on Garage Gym Iron Page, when discussing protein powders. I've come here a several times since then, to order Bomber Blend, but I never checked out IOL until very recently, and now I'm sorry I didn't get in here sooner.

Currently training on a Push/Pull setup, with 3 main exercises worked each time, and some core and grip work thrown in. Trying to do weighted walks and limited jogging, but the weather is not cooperating, and the hours at work are cutting into all training, the last month. I lift at home in my garage, set up with a Body Solid power rack, some db handles, a Texas Power Bar, 500lb of chinese oly weights, and a PDA wrist roller.

Heh people. I just joined up. Have been in quite a slump lately, just not training so much. My main problem is that I want to get the fat off, instead I just keep packing on muscle when I train because that's what comes easy! I'm starting to get real down on the muscle because I look like a hulk with all the fat. Really need to get the fat off. Anyhow, just wanted to say hi. I'm in Tokyo, originally from Pittsburgh, 45, female, midget height (good for Japan!) no really, only 5' 1 1/2"
Well, don't really know what to say. Just wanted to jump in! Hello to all.

Blackjack actually I'm sympathic to your position. I've only gone through one cutting cycle but it was a disaster. I probably lost as much muscle as fat. Getting the muscle is pretty easy getting rid of the fat - well that's harder.

Hey everyone, I'm Ryan I'm 21 and go to Bridgewater State College, for business management but I don't really know if I will be looking for a job in that area when I graduate. I have been working out for about 3 yrs now. I am drug and alchohol free.(which is socially unacceptable in college) but when it comes to working out I am hooked. I am going to California next week for spring break and plan to visit gyms while there, even though finding good meals will be hard. Besides that I made reservations for another trip to Cali in July and plan on attending the BB. Oh yeah and if anyone who lives in Cali wants to invite me over for dinner you will be my best friend since we are staying in hostels and the food is horrible. Thanks!

Thanks for the information. It just helps confirms what I'm doing.

Lately I have been adjusting the insulin levels and it takes a bit to get things under control again and I start wondering what I am doing wrong. But I guess that is part of life, a person needs to change in order to improve and the change doesn't always work properly the first time.

Essentially I really watch the fat content, stick with fruit and veggies, and stick with carbs that don't get absorbed as quickly.

I might have to increase the intensity of the weight lifting so I can burn of more of the fat that way.

Thanks
Juergen

One of the things I love is the range of ages we have on this board :) My dad and I have a common ground in lifting and running, though I don't get to see him much anymore since I moved :(. He's the only member of my family who is into lifting and so on, in fact he still has both my DD books hah. I need to get those back...Daddy is 57 and I'm 24. What I would LOVE to do is to make it to the Bash this year with him..I think he would love it and I would love to have a trip with my dad, just him and me, he's always been the parent I'm closest to.

You know, a little over 2 years ago I went from taking insulin twice a day (a short and long(er) acting mix each shot) to doing it 4 times a day; short acting before each major meal, and an intermediate acting one before bed. Also went to the adjustment method of giving more (or less) short acting before each meal based on blood sugar reading, what the meal would include, etc. They told me this would provide more freedom in meal choices blah blah blah, but maybe it allowed too much freedom as the last 2 years are when I've put on quite abit of weight and my readings have not been as good as in previous years.

Even 3-4 years before that change, I had been only taking 1 injection per day. So basically between the ages of 13-29 when I only took on injection per day, I had great to excellent readings (most of the time). Then it was decided I could have better control on 2 shots per day, and then to "tweak" control better I was moved to 4. Perhaps I shoulda ignored the recommendations and stuck with 1 mixed shot per day, or perhaps I should be looking at one of those insulin pumps. I know of a couple of people that have done really well on them.

Now in the last 2-5 years life has changed a lot, so I can't blame everything on the change in insulin schedules. Before either of my kids were born I would walk at least 30-45 minutes, 5-6 days per week; my workplace had a fitness centre so it was easier to do 4-5 workouts per week (I changed jobs 4.5 years ago); and I had a lot less stress (work mostly, but family stress too as it ain't always easy to look after a precocious little princess and a brute of a baby boy), not to mention certain periods of both baby-imposed and self-imposed lack of sleep. Anyways, the value of proper sleep and regular and consistent exercise has become re-inforced for me.

That sounds fairly similar to what I am doing. I have gone from my 2 a day (short and long) to using 4 a day. Started making the changes in December and I think I am finally getting the levels under control. I have been using thee 2 a day for about 17 years and it just didn't seem to work as effectively as before. I suppose this whole process will change again as I'm looking to change jobs and then everything else seems to change, like stress, activity, etc.

There is a new insulin finally approved in Canada, I think the US has it available for a few years already, that acts over a 24 hour period and then you just have to take a mealtime insulin to compensate for the meals. I am just waiting to get into the doctors to make these changes.

Have you heard of any experiences with this?

I'm Toby, from Melbourne, Australia (pronounced mel-burn, not mel-born, that always cracks me up ... the trick with 'Strine is to lose as many vowels as possible ;). Been lurking for a while, reading IOL for ages, but only registered today.

Anyway, I just turned 30, I've been training on and off for about 10 years, consistently again for the last 2. Originally got into training while studying Philosophy, which I was rather good at: black-wearing, nocturnal, overweight, unfit, chronically depressed and alcoholic. Getting fit and getting in touch with my body when I was 20 has probably saved me a lot of anguish in later life. I did a lot of running with varying degrees of seriousness for a long time, until my knees gave out, but I've always loved the iron.

Anyway, late last year found out I have high cholesterol, not too bad but bad for a 30 year old, if you know what I mean, and pretty much genetic (thanks, Dad). This was the kick I need to start getting much more serious. I've been pretty dedicated since New Years, and have just reached a point where my body has started to really change shape ... I was OK before, and people would comment on my arms, but I was probably about 5 or 6kg (10 lbs or so) too heavy. I currently tip the scales at 83kg (183lbs) with another 3kg (7lbs) of fat to lose.

I am experimenting with some HIT-inspired workouts at the moment ... going very heavy, reduced the volume of sets, all very hard work. It's too early to really tell what effect it's having, but I feel bloody fantastic! Last week my weight was static, but I very obviously stripped fat from my waist ... I have started to see my abs for the first time in a long long time ... and if I can gain as much as I lose ...

I think I've heard of it but no experiences. I don't keep all that up to date on new improvements. Actually I'm going to see a "specialist" tomorrow (Wed Mar 9). Guess my doctor figures I need some more tweaking. We'll see.

I'm interested in a pump, but not sure if I have the time to committ to the whole 'indoctrination' process at this point.

I am booked for a specialist in June, don't you love the quick responce of the health system, unless there is a cancellation. I might talk to my family doctor and see if he wants to try to make changes before the specialist.

Hey blue1

Health system actually worked a little too quickly for me on this one, and I had hoped my family doctor wouldn't jump the gun so soon. Wouldv'e preferred he wait til the next a-1-c reading since I'm getting back into doing more exercise now. Oh well.

Appointment went okay I guess. The last specialist I went to a couple of years ago was more laid back, easy going, but she's on maternity right now, so the one I saw today has a more hands on approach. I get to follow up with her weekly for the next month on this insulin schedule she has for me, as well as logging my dietary habits. I know, I know, Dave, and others espouse this anyway, but I hate logging stuff whether it's the food I eat or my bloodsugars. It just seems like my schedule is required to be too rigid. Perhaps the carefree way I have eaten and done my monitoring is why my readings are off, though I prefer to think it's mostly because I've been lazy in regards to my exercise habits, which I'm fixing. Again, oh well, gotta do what ya gotta do right? Good thing tongight's a gym night and I can take my frustrations over having to do this out on some iron.

Hey Guys and Gals,

I am new to this forum. I am 30 years old (female) and quite active at the gym with cardio...weights not my strong point. I just started doing weight training twice a week, an hour each time. They have been saying how important 6 meals a day is....okay I have tried this and gained, I am thinking maybe you have to be doing a lot more intensive weight training to pull of 6 small meals a day..any thoughts.

Welcome Winsji...I would believe that if you are eating the amount of calories that you are burning than it shouldn't be a problem...Maybe your meals are a little more than you think they are.....Maybe post what you are eating so the IOL'ers can get an idea!!!?

Again Welcome!!!

Hey Gang, Im a 70 year old vet of the iron game..having started back in 1948. A retired teacher, daddy of seven and gran of 11! I workout 6 days a week, work at an historical site giving lectures in between landscaping chores. This is the greatest of all body conditioning sites that I know of,and I have visited quite a lot. I am only an expert on myself and even there I sometimes surprise myself!! I consider my self still a student of life and like a sponge I absorb as much as the tide brings me ,evaluate it and use the best parts for continued growth. Hope I can contribute a point or two...chao..Nino

nah, on a more serious note fellows, me is a 2nd semester @ PSU (Penn State Uni.), soon to transfer to JMU (James Madison... as if anyone gives an ants ass about all this drivel :D).

what else. I am a convert. meaning, IOL has changed me in a LOTA ways, the guys i mean. Stingo, Manor, pointcove, WW, Cajin, Smasher, Jon... heck, all of you people touched my past in some way or another... specially grateful to Laree for her paitence, in the not so distant past, for tolerating my rants and various rude mannerisms in the forum... thanx to Dave for being the man he is. A darned good model to follow, an idol to admire. rocking :o)

on and off lifting for the last 4 years. sad to say that my body is no longer what it once was ;) but ofcourse, bring me the horizon i say!

wotcher IOLers!!

peace!~
Riaz

Hello,

New to the forum. I actually ran across the forum while reading an article Dave wrote about my grandfather Robert Zuver and Joe Weider. I am 22, and have been working out on and off for the past 3 years. I guess working out kind of runs in the family. From when my grandfather had Zuver's gym and partnership with Joe Weider to my parents always working out as kids.

Hi, I’m Barry. I’m 51 years old. After living a rather sedentary lifestyle, my wife and I wanted to try something new. Like exercise. Two and a half years ago we started training in Krav Maga, a form of self defense that was developed by the Israeli army. In one year I lost 30 pounds, stopped smoking and have never looked back. I train three times a week. I started lifting at that time too, because I bought a weight machine for my kid. I lift about 2-3 times per week. I changed my diet too. I eat real clean, plenty of protein, (there are a million and one ways to prepare chicken), fresh fruits and lots of vegetables. My one weakness is salty/crunchy snacks. I constantly forbid my wife from buying them, but now and then they find their way into my house. I have one cheat day. I prefer cardio, but lift because it’s relaxing(go figure) and it is a cool thing to do with my kid. He’s 18 and going to college in six months so everyday with him is precious. I discovered this website by accident and found it to be filled with lots of great information and a bunch of very interesting people.

Hi everyone, I'm Gustavo, an (from now on) ex-lurker from Argentina. I saw this thread and decided to register. Well, I'm 24 years old, and started with this iron addiction 11 months ago. Thanks to the IOL now I know what I'm doing (routine and eating wise) and just wanted to say: thankyou very very much.

(I'm sorry if my english is not very good...)

Gustavo,

Welcome!
I sure hope you enjoy being part of our family here... My son is your age, and whenever I see men your age actively participating here, I wish and hope for the day I could get my son going in the iron game. He's a "grasshopper" in the Graphic Design Business - Associates degree, trying to establish work with a solid company so he can get on his feet. No time for lifting right now, but I have hope for his future...

Stay tuned!

;-))
