I've never been one to get a full 8hr restful sleep but lately now that I'm giving DC training a try, I'm really making an effort to get in a few additional hours of sleep a night. I find I'm up quite a few times during the night...sometimes every hour.
Thinking about trying ZMA. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

Tryptophan is available again, too - was off the market for a long time. I'd try the ZMA first, and be prepared for some freaky dreams.

I like benadryl (I buy the generic brand).

It's not habit forming, is seriously inexpensive and works like a charm.

It's time to move on,time to get going,
What lies ahead, I have no way of knowing,
But under my feet baby, grass is growing,
It's time to move on, it's time to get going...

You must not be tired. Workout until exhausted, then do some more. Pretty soon you'll get tired and sleep through the night.

Best sleep aid I discovered was reducing caffeine intake.

Valerian Root. 100% natural and it really works. I am an insomniac and it works very well for me. You can find it at any drug store. One word of caution however, it smells

That definately helps. I don't drink coffee or tea after lunch anymore. Between that and a good hard evening (7 PM) workout and my postwork out glass of milk and Hershey's chocolate (Mmmm mmm good) I sleep like a babe until 5 AM!

This definately works too.

Try this one:

This is actually a superb book, it's one of my favorite books on Math. Basically, history of math from the "birth of numbers".

tryptophan, an amino acid, is a precursor to production of somatotropin by the pituitary. Further metabolic steps past that of somatotropin results in melatonin. and tryptophan first metabolizes to 5-HTP, available OTC during the FDA's persecution of tryptophan.

It may just be my sensitivity to melatonin, but I find the standard 3 mg way too much - it gives me a pronounced hangover next morning. Of all things, Walmart actually sells 300 mcg (microgram) melatonin - for a darn good price, too. I sleep really well is that little amount of melatonin. It is, however, advised NEVER to use melatonin for those under 40 - we begin producing less after 40. Since I'm well past 40 and 50 and nearing half passed 60, I usually take it 5 nights out of the week.

For ZMA, you can combine a zinc supplement with a magnesium supplement along with 100 mg of b-6. I've never noted this stuff contributing to enhancing sleep, however. The original basis for using it was to not mix both with Calcium - it's claimed that calcium competes with both zinc and magnesium for uptake, and wins - so BALCO recommended separating the use of both.

Benadryl will sure make you sleep as will any other anti-histamine. I've heard it also resensitizes androgen receptor sites for those who use and abuse cleb. On a comparative basis, I'd go for melatonin any day since benadryl really wipes me out. In recent years I've had to use it sometimes going on 2-3 months due to Cedar allergies in Nov-March in the Hill Country - and that really takes a fatigue toll on me.

hope this helps someone

Thanks everyone!

I took three caps of ZMA and 2mg of meletonin last night and it did help. I still found myself waking up a few times and unable quickly fall back to sleep. BUT overall it was an improvement.
