Did anyone see it? It was shown on Monday. This was a documentary about 2 female bodybuilders. They support their hobby by allowing adoring male fans to watch them pose in private but that's as far as it goes - just close up admiration. I quoted the following paragraphs with a few snips to make it briefer.

"Monday’s compelling edition focuses chiefly on Gayle Moher, one of the world’s leading athletes in the field. There are only 70 professional female body builders in the world, and Gayle Moher is in the top ten. She lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with her 17year-old daughter, Courtney. Originally from Norwich, she moved to America in the late 80s to pursue her dreams of becoming a bodybuilder. “It’s a sport that people who are not involved in couldn’t possibly understand,” she says.
Next stop for the girls is Milan, where they attract a lot of attention on the street. Lauren makes no effort to hide her light under a bushel, and an ordinary stroll down the street becomes an odyssey of beeping horns, waves, stares and comments. “When people see me in public, three things happen,” she says. “Either they have such admiration –which is about 90 per cent of the people –or they feel threatened and intimidated by my appearance. Then there are some people who are completely disgusted.
Gayle’s trip is rounded off by a visit to her parents in Norwich, who only get to see her a couple of times every year. On this visit, she has even brought them a gift –a copy of her latest DVD, ‘Evil Goddess 2’."

My apologies if I strayed a bit close to the boundaries. The actual documentary over here was shown at 21.00 p.m., more or less at family viewing time. According to the documentary, the female bodybuilders allowed nerdy types to admire their physique (or play wrestle) but that's as far as it went.
I did think the women looked a bit butch to be honest with deep voices.

Whoa... talk about Moher, she kinda looks like Sheryl Crow on something more than protein powder and creatine. I don't have a problem with that of course if that's her decision and she does look somewhat (there's that word again) sensual, however, not my idea of the ideal Woman. Still, she's not bad. Aw jeez, I just don't know what to think about this one!! ;>)

The Spanish cycling community refer to Sheryl Crow as Juanita Cuervo. It's her Spanish nickname. Apparently she took up cycling and got herself into shape. "Cuervo" is Spanish for "crow" ths Juanita Cuervo.

Well, actually I don't think Dobri is being naive here. I was very close to a former pro bodybuilder (female) and the 'pay per view', so to speak, was a popular way to supplement her income. She was a brutally honest gal and would have been upfront, as I asked her onetime how 'far' these things went. (And no we were not dating. ) Her statement was it was truly a pay per view, watching them flex, pose, etc. but not in the nude. In face given the mentality of some of these men (their fetishes) they probably would not be interested (many of them) in taking it further.

Ok, I know everyone can choose to do what they want to do. No problem. I beleive that women have a bit more maturity , and in most cases, are a bit smarter than men. They tend to have both feet on the ground more than us guys. The women I know do anyway. As a husband, like guys here that are married or have girlfreinds, would like to see them take a larger interest and participation in bodybuilding, etc. Some do, most don't. I beleive it's examples like this in women's bodybuilding that is one of the greates reasons why there is the decline in women's bodybuilding as a whole. Mags trying to get off the ground to promote it, shows declining in attendance and participation, on and on. Guys looking like cartoon caricatures are pretty muchexpected by both men and women. As men sometimes our test takes over our common sense. But when a woman sees something like this Gayle, it's not really something they want to be identified with. If you bring back the Rachel McLish's you'll see women's bodybuilding grow. And the reason for that much ugliness in silicone is what?

As far as I'm aware that really is as far as things went. These women were pro bodybuilders who needed money to finance their sport. They had no specific objection to posing privately for money by what was referred to as "muscle worshippers".
The clients were mostly skinny, geeky guys who loved muscle on a lady. These guys were left in no doubt that close-up admiration was as far as it would go.
This thing has been going on in bodybuilding for years, let's be honest. If Wendy Leigh is to be believed in her book, Arnold was supposed to have capitalised on his body in his early days as well but, again, Wendy Leigh stresses this was above board. That is, simply physiqe posing for cash.
Of course, it would be naieve of me to claim these so-called muscle worshippers might be after more than simply squeezing biceps but they know the rules. One guy in Milan paid 700 dollars to a femle bodybuilder simply to watch her flex and pose close up.

Strange. That produces very mixed emotions in me.

I liked the look of one of the exercises she was doing in the free video though. The one where she was pulling the tricep pull down thing from behind her head (I'm really trying to be serious here but it's hard no to appear smutty after that!).
Anyway, that pull looked like it would be great on the biceps, does it have a name?

This is strictly my personal, very techincally minded opinion....

I'm all for the dedication it takes and very much admire that portion of it... But don't particularly like the visual results of extreme female body building.

I think anyone who is as dedicated as they are can understand that what they mold themselves into isn't everyone's cup of tea. If I were in their position I'd be flatered if someone said they didn't particularly care for the way I look but admire my dedication... that would mean more to me than someone simply thinking I was hot... at least they know what goes on to GET to that level.

....I saw a magazine the other day with a great cover, Tosca Reno. Never seen her before. I think she's beautiful.

I think my mum's worry with me doing weights is that I'll turn into something like the women in that programme....It's why it was hard for me to encourage quite a few other girls on the university rugby team to take weights seriously, too. However much I tried to reason with them with all the usual lines on why women won't get big unless they specifically train with that aim, and work bloody hard (possibly with chemical help), they still had the hard-to-shift mindset that weights made you look manly. The above picture (Reno) is certainly infinitely more aesthetically pleasing as a feminine physique in my opinion (and I would guess, to most people) than the women featured in the show: The juiced-up, square-jawed look would serve to put more women off weight training than anything else, I think. Plus I'd imagine that the slightly peculiar type of man featured in that tv show are the only guys who'd really like women like that...

Just tell your friends to take a look at you.

Look around online for some info, theres plenty of hot, toned girls out there, who can probably squat more than me (with proper form anyway, but thats a different thread altogether). Beyonce knowles is quoted as saying if you wanna be bootylicious, you gotta get squatting. Id take her word on it.

Tell your mum not to fear: the main "reason" for the look to which you refer is purely and simply drugs which artificially raise testosterone levels in the body. It has very little to do with how hard they train. Take a look at some of the pictures of the "pioneers" of womens bodybuilding, Lisa Lyons, Rachel Mclish etc. These ladies trained probably as hard if not harder than the modern bodybuilders but because of the absence of drugs they retained femininity.

Hope this helps

Gazz, thanks for that! Yeah, I understand all this about women lifting weights, and love it myself - I just think that many people don't and that's why women often have a real reluctance to do any resistance work. I think many people have an image of these female bodybuilders who are on steroids as typical of what happens when women lift, therefore giving them a negative feeling towards weightlifting women (whether it's women avoiding weights, or men not liking the idea of them doing it)

Cory Everson is what I would deem the real birth of women's bodybuilding and Rachel would be considered small in today's terms for most figure comps. That is my opinion of course. Rachel in the off season is hot, that's my testosterone speaking .

When it comes to the pros or high calibur competitions, they all use some "assistance" even for figures, so please don't say these women don't work out as hard because they are on drugs and there is no reason to belittle them and call them she-males etc. It's their choice not yours and all because you don't agree with them doesn't mean it gives you the right to be boorish.

Manor

I have assumed that it is my post which you are responding to and has caused offence. If this is the case then I apologise but would ask you to re read it in the context that it was intended.

RosieC commented: “my mum's worry with me doing weights is that I'll turn into something like the women in that programme"

To which my response was “Tell your mum not to fear: the main "reason" for the look to which you refer is purely and simply drugs which artificially raise testosterone levels in the body. It has very little to do with how hard they train. Take a look at some of the pictures of the "pioneers" of womens bodybuilding, Lisa Lyons, Rachel Mclish etc. These ladies trained probably as hard if not harder than the modern bodybuilders but because of the absence of drugs they retained femininity.”

I was merely pointing out that it would be most unlikely that even the hardest training woman in the world would have little or no chance of building such an extreme physique without the use of artificial enhancement. My intention was to put the ladies mind at ease as unfortunately many of the general public think all you need to do (male or female) is throw a few weights around for a year or two and suddenly you'll look like Arnold.

I stated a fact. I did not belittle anyone or call them derogatory names as you suggest. I passed no comment as to my stance on the use of drugs in the sport, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with the route many bodybuilders have chosen to take. As you correctly say it is a personal choice.

With regard to how hard these girls train. I am not niaive enough to believe that whether assisted or not there is not a tremendous amount of dedication (both training and lifestyle sacrifices) to reach this sort of condition. However the fact remains that artificial aids have a tremendous bearing on the overall package delivered.

As I say I apologise if I caused offence. Please take my response to RosieC in the context it was meant.

All the best

Gazz, not at all Buddy I was merely annoyed that some people like to think their way of thinking or judging people is how everyone thinks (or should think) about these ladies. I totally agree with what you have written and understand what you wrote about the drugs etc. so I also apologize if you felt I was pointing a finger at you it was not my intent.

Manor, I think it may have been my comment about the type of guy who likes this physique on a woman that has upset you, and I'm very sorry for that. It was a flippant remark and was one of the unnecessary generalisations I'd been talking about in my post, so again, I apologise. In my original post I was trying to say that I always try and explain to other girls the amount of hardwork (possibly with chemical enhancement) it takes to get a real "bodybuilder" build and that it won't happen overnight or by mistake. I admire the effort and dedication these women put in to the sport and didn't mean to come across as derogatory in any way either towards them or their supporters/admirers, and I am sorry if I did come across that way. I'm all in favour of muscly women and would spend my life alone if there weren't guys who liked it too...

It's not you Rosie; in fact I'm regretting posting it now since it has been misleading. I was making a general comment that every time a pic of these "extreme" bodybuilding women as some would call them it has to be followed by calling them men wannabes, if that was the case the $$ spent on cosmetics and implants would have better serve them for a gender operation. I don't like overly muscled women and to what extent is considered overly muscled for me? If my daughter wanted to be like these ladies and she had the resources to achieve it, my love for her and the person she is would never change. Sorry about this for anyone who thinks I'm attacking you I just wanted things to remain civil would it not suffice to say you don't like it and leave it at that instead of trying to degrade them as well and making fun of them as bullies would?

There are many sides to this question. Some months ago I saw a T.V. program about a girl from Wales who was totally devoted to building muscles. She winded up going to L.A. as she dreamed of winning Miss Olympia.
While in L.A., it would be fair to say she was having a good time. She worked out in a serious gym where there were other female bodybuilders present. She also made a living through her appointments with male admirers - guys who paid a lot of money to photograph her and wrestle.
Again, I should stress this is all that happened and seems no different to me than guys in the time of Pumping Iron receiving cash to pose privately.
However, from her parents perspective, it was all worrying. They didn't like their daughter making these She Goddess movies, running an admirer website and, above all, using steroids. They worried she still hadn't found a partner, settled down and thought about marriage, a home and a more conventional career.
So, there were two perspectives. I found I saw it both ways but really I think it all depends on whether their daughter was happy in herself.

I'm all in favour of muscly women and would spend my life alone if there weren't guys who liked it too...

I like it! Oh wait, I'm married....

"Plus I'd imagine that the slightly peculiar type of man featured in that tv show are the only guys who'd really like women like that..."

What they had in common was they weren't bodybuilders but typically nerdy, arty, skinny types. They interviewed the guys on the program and they stated they loved muscle on the female physique and were in awe of such development.
They didn't strike me as particularly weird in any way and I noticed the two female bodybuilders would pose together in a safe environment and a fun atmosphere.
Funnily enough, I just heard the artist who painted Madonna recently was really into muscular women too but he upset Guy Richie and horrified Madonna as well.
I found the painting highly amusing. He'd painted Madonna with huge, comic book muscles while Guy was depicted as a shaven headed convict type so it wasn't too flattering for Guy.

Plus I'd imagine that the slightly peculiar type of man featured in that tv show are the only guys who'd really like women like that...

...it's as obvious as a bad toupee! Both are supposed to look like a naturally better version of the original equipment, not like some foriegn object stuck on your body and hanging on by a thread.

Out here in Plastic Land we refer to those as "bolt ons".

I edited and forwarded the following comment below as I found the whole thing highly amusing. I've seen this painting and found it hilarious. Madonna has these huge, cartoon muscles.
The thing with artists is they take this kind of work very seriously.
An artist once came to my house and showed me this artistic creation he had made in movie format and the effect was it totally cracked me up. I know it was kind of rude to react that way but no way could I keep my composure and laughed so much my abs were sore the next day.
It caused offence as well.
However, Guy Richie doesn't find any of this funny at all:

"Extremely muscular Madonna with her husband Guy Ritchie. No, it’s not a movie scene, it’s a latest painting of Peter Howson. It’s his third Madonna painting. It is well known that Ritchie didn’t like last two, and it’s almost sure, that he won’t like the third one as well.
'Peter’s a bit obsessed with Madonna,' said Howson’s dealer. 'There are strong rumors that Ritchie was very jealous of the earlier pictures and wanted to knock Peter’s block off.'
'It’s probably a subconscious thing that I’ve got with Ritchie and yes, I’ve heard that he may not have liked my other portraits,' Howson said. 'I’ve never actually fancied her but I admit I’ve got a thing about her.'”
