So I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this. Where the military press limits the complex weight, unless you turn it into a push press. This seems to be pretty natural limiting factor, especially following the One Arm Presses.

The book says military press, to me that means stand at attention, feet together, and strictly press.

So the question is, do we choose the highest weight we can military press cleanly, or do we push the weight and use push presses as needed?

Don't overthink it, use a stance your comfortable with and just put the weight overhead without using your legs. The idea is simply time under tension.

I did it both ways throughout my MMS experience. Some workouts I'd try to push the weight and had to push press. I also used more modest weights and was careful to press everything strictly through the complex. From what I remember the push press sets were even more tiring than when I used a strict press. I thought both ways were good, but ultimately I thought strict pressing was best for me.

I just typically like being “in control” of movements, so I’ll probably use a weight that I can strictly press for the prescribe repetitions

Also having a funky feeling in between my shoulder/bicep after having to push pretty hard during my pressing yesterday.

The idea is this: the Press keeps the weights manageable. I actually want you to go lighter because of the press.

Thanks for the input.

In that case, it sounds like I’m doing it right!

What is the benefit from going lighter on the complex? Is it so you have more in the tank for the squats?

I kind of think the book tells you when to go lighter for the press and when not to.

Some times, Dan will say “go heavier if you can” and that’s when I make sure I can strict press.

Other times he will simply say “use a heavier weight.” That’s when I’ll push press if I have to.
