Recommends straps above 1/2 BW per hand to reduce injury risk. Never felt the need to myself.

Thumbs up/down?

Not Dan, but I'd give straps a thumbs down here. There is such as thing as holding on too long...

I have nothing against straps per se, however, the need for straps may also indicate that the trainee may not be ready to work with that amount of weight overall.
Mark it Zero.

There are times and places for straps. I don't see farmers' walks as being one of them.

If you look at the strongman contests, they allow straps for events like deadlifts and car holds, but not for the farmers walk. I think that tells you something right there.

would the grip normally give out prior to the wrist suffering an injury?

This seems like a mismatch of risk and concern.

The wrist seems very well suited to extended traction forces. The shoulder, not quite as much.

Injury risk?

I would think that there would be more injury risk overloading with the straps than in allowing the grip to fail.

The response was expected. It seems like a very odd recommendation given that you can hold so much more in a pull.

On a positive note, he didn't suggest using kettlebells would interfere with the motor patterns of walking.

It don't matter

and lots of little muscles and connective tissue being bounced and pulled around while heavily fatigued,

with farmers bars KBs etc the grip is not as big a factor as with a dumbell, as the dumbell rolls in the hand, not so with farmers bars, maybe if using dumbells, but care should be taken not to go too much heavier than your grip would allow

I like the fact that the grip is a limiting issue. I am fine with a drop. By pushing on and on, I can only imagine the injuries.

If you have to put it down, put it down. Rest a moment and then pick it up again.

Next time you do it you'll probably be able to go a bit longer. Progress.

This is how I see it should be done.

Farmers walks have been a regular weekly exercise for me for the last 15 years, what My fellow Melbournian states is one of the most satisfying aspects of this particular exercise, for me.

More often than not, towards the end, the handle is resting on my finger tips, the trick is putting down safely, straight back and all...

Straps for farmers walks are permissible, provided you follow two rules;

Strap your wrists together.

Stay home.
You have been selected for TERMINATION.

Every single post on this thread represent the reason why Dan John Q&A is the best place on the internet. I even have a mental picture of us drinking single malt and Chablis together in this "wise people country club".

I posted back at the site that had the article.

My point, when I started, my grip was my safety valve. When I couldn't hold on, I had to set down or let go. Eventually, that wasn't a problem.

I might have left a wrist on the ground with straps.

Having spent a good part of my childhood living on a farm, I can honestly say I never saw anyone carry anything with straps on their wrists. And there was some really heavy carrying going on.

Hay hooks? Sometimes. Straps? Nope.

Kinda defeats the purpose of the Farmer's Walk, doesn't it?
