I don't think it's the gender; I think it's more a factor of responding to people who are posting in the logs, and it looks like women are more comfortable posting in the log forum than in the main forum (huge generalization, but somewhat true), so they perhaps get more response in their logs. The guys who write in others' logs get reciprocation... it's a participation thing.

It's true there's another group of loggers, those who are simply logging for accountability, which is the number one training benefit of keeping a log. Those threads may be a list of exercises and weights, leaving not much to hook a comment on, and in fact, comments may not even be encouraged or anticipated. I like to comment on newer logs, but sometimes it's hard to find something to say other than "keep at it."

Finally, a note about post volume. I *so* encourage you guys to check out the "Recent Posts" link at the top right side of your screen. That's magic for the time-pressed. If I had to open each thread, there's absolute no way I'd see everything. Instead, I get a quick scan of most everything that goes on here, and open a new tab for those where I see an opening for a comment. One point about the Recent Posts readers, of which there are many: Our reading of your posts is not included in the view count, meaning your logs have a lot more views than is shown in the count.

My logging has always and still does leave a lot to be desired. I think what I have found most here is encouragement.....encouragement to keep doing something active every day for the rest of my life...encouragement to remember that the world is bigger than my own space....encourgement to observe, learn and grow...encourgement to give back to others as much as I have been given...encouragement to know when to post and when to listen.

I found this forum after my wife and I separated back in 2000 or 2001. I have been mostly a lurker ever since. This forum has opened me up to the world of kettlebells, which, in reality, fit ,my more mobile lifestyle.

Finally, I have made friends here that, while I don't see them face to face, I know that I can count on these friends to evaluate and critique my workouts if I need, my diet and even my life if I ask.

Well for one, it's kept me off ebay!! No time. HA!
Diet wise I've integrated Bombers Blend into my diet for at least two meals. That has been with water and it's fairly tasty and now that I'm going to try taking in more calories and intend to mix it with milk, it should be even better.
Workout wise, I've started challenging myself by handling more weight in my exercises as I had gotten into a rut handling the same weight for more reps and not trying to add weight and cut reps once in a while. Also going back to squats and deadlifts to try and get bigger and stronger.
Also enjoying some fine reading from the IOL bookstore to help keep me motivated. I quote DD so much that my daughters roll their eyes at me and call him my boyfriend. They are in their mid 20's and I haven't gotten them to do that since they were teenagers!! Can't be all bad. Got the younger one lifting and doing 5K races with me. The older one is built like a supermodel with no effort on her part(yet) so she isn't as motivated to workout. She also is busy chasing my 1 year old granddaughter and finding extra time is hard for her. I'm still working on her though.
Have to admit, this is my number 1 go-to site for bodybuilding and weight training info. I like the atmosphere. All ideas are encouraged even if not agreed with. Some great people here I hope to meet one day at a bash. Bob.

one of these days someone is going to wave their majic wand and brillaint words will flow from the end of my fingertips. I was thinking last night about what I was going to say however this morning those words seem to have gone so here goes...
since joining IOL I'm not sure that diet or training has changed much but its more than that I find that IOL is like a lifeline. Besides my husband there isnt really anyone else that I can discuss training/diet or whatever issues crop up with. Most of my friends are overweight and not really interested in a healthy lifestyle (which is sad in itself).

When I'm feeling that I'm not accomplishing much regarding training I come here and tell it how it is and get lots of encouragement back. I've got to "meet" all sorts of interesting people from all over the world, see others ideas and points of view (not that I always agree and think only in America! LOL.

there is no condemnation here only encouragement
so thanks Dave and Laree for this wonderful website

Not sure if I've changed much in my training or diet as I've been pretty consistant for years, though I'm sure I've tweaked things here and there based on information I have gleaned from the group. The best thing I've gotten from IOL (and I truely mean this) is meeting/corresponding with so many really great people, along with all the positive reinforcement.

I pretty much echo what gem1 just said. I am in contact with other lifters, mostly only once a year, at a contest I help judge. IOL helps me connect more often.

I was part of the Old Iron days mainly in my youth. It was all I thought about and did. Everything from lifting to nutrition to reading the mags. Then all of sudden I quit, for over 20 years. I made many excuses and realized a couple years ago it was just plain laziness. I needed to do something about it and I did. I was engulfed in the exercise game again but I took advantage of the internet and because of my father I found the IOL and Dave and Laree's site. I think I learned more from you guys (IOL) than I ever thought possible. This forum and site gave me more inspiration and motivation to continue. Though my weight loss hasnt been as dramatic as I hoped, but my strength, I believe, not only returned but is better than when I was in my 20's. Yeah, I'm still fat, but I feel better, my blood pressure is better than it has been in over 20 years. And this is all from reading and enjoying my new family at the IOL! Of which I'm grateful!

All in all this is and has been a life change for me and my wife. Yeah, I got her to start working out. And that wasn't easy!

As far as changing my diet or exercise, just reading and getting new ideas will change things for anyone even if they don't realize it.

Thank god there are a lot of older guys here that are still dedicated to the lifting life style.

Dave has been a big inspiration to me. He is only a couple of years older and give me something to shoot for in body composition. At least I have a little more hair than him....although it's mostly white.

I should probably get back to logging my training although there isn't much feedback on what I am doing. Of course I keep most of my training secrets out of the log Looking at my log though it's mostly a record of my training with only a small amount of comments. The most by Stingo! over 1200 views though. There must be a lot of people who need something to put themselves to sleep at night! Stingo how are you sleeping these days?

All in all the good stuff outweighs the negatives on this sight for me. Little gems of information pop up every now and then.

Bruce

I don't have time to give this thread the attention it deserves, but I found IOL about the same time I started learning about eating a clean diet and training smart. As a result, about everything I do now as far as healthy, strong living has been influenced by my friends on this site. This site, and especially the Training Logs, is a Godsend.

Thanks Laree. I can't help but think that you and Dave must do extra time on the cardio machines to be able to keep all of this going.

As one who found this site on Google at the beginning of rehab for an injury, I have benefitted from the diet and workout advice and as we all do am making personal modifications.

I appreciate the old timers patience and seldom have seen reference to FAQ's, archives, etc. Although I'm sure over the years many of the topics have repeated, this site seems fresh and welcoming to newcomers. Now that's CLASS.

I found IOL after I went looking for some way to squat with a bum shoulder and found the Topsquat. That got me started squatting again. After lurking a bit, I posted my routine asked for comments, got some [nicely put] to the effect the effect that it sucked. Eventually, I agreed and completely changed my weight routine from doing mostly isolation stuff to mostly compound stuff, and to re-thinking the role of weights in my total fitness efforts.

Good stuff for me.

YES!!! Often you can see on many other forums, new members ask a question and they get a whole page of flaming and abuse from people saying "GOT SEARCH??" OR "WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS A MILLION TIMES!!" ETC, ETC. You never see that here, it's so nice.
Best thread ever! :)

Huh! I never really thought about the lack of "use search" posts. That's great stuff.

Jeff, I'll bet a whole bunch of readers here have shifted to more compound, full-body work, if not completely so, maybe even without realizing it. It would be hard to spend much time here without at least trying some form of squats or deadlifts, and then trying again until it felt right.

Being a gym introvert, I enjoy the thoughts shared by all. Dave's weekly inspiration boosts my enthusiam. None of my friends are even remotely interested in working out. From chats of weight lifting to personal events, some happy, some sad, I am glad to sit in the IOL living room with the family. Unlike the magazines, I have learned that we all have triumphs and failures, PR's and injuries. IOL keeps it real.

Geez, so many things have changed in my training and diet since 2003 when I became a member of IOL. Too many to list. But some are high protein-high fat/low carb eating, Gironda exercises and training with little rest periods between sets are probably the biggest changes for me. I also learned to experiment with different exercises and variations and not be so rigid in my thinking about diets and training. From Laree and Judge I've learned more about cholesterol levels and natural supps for lowering it. I now have my LDL Density checked in my lipid panel as a result of Dave & Laree. I've learned a lot about training from WW and Cajin and especially from the time this spring when Cajin and I traveled to and from the Austin Bash as well as the time we spent together there I took advantage of this opportunity to pick his brain. After seeing a rerun of "The Beverly Hillbillies" a year or 2 ago with the Ole Blond Bomber doin' Barbell Hack Squats by the cement pond they have been a staple in my leg work outs as they are both knee and lower back friendly to me.
Hehehe, now that I've got Laree drinkin' black coffee the next project is to get them listenin' to Country Music. When we all went to The BBQ Joint after The Old Texas Barbell Co. there was a pic of Ole George Strait on the wall edorsin' the place. I said "lookie there it must be good if George Strait says so". Dave looked at me and said "who's George Strait ?" I was shocked ! We've got to get the guy some culture.
I've never found IOL to be cliquish. I have found that the activity on my training log is pretty much dependent on how much I post comments in other members logs which to my regret hasn't been much lately with all the activity going on here at home.
The thing that has changed most for me though is all the great friendships I've made both on line and at the Bashes and Mini Bashes. Which wouldn't be possible with out all the time, effort and work that the Draper's put in here for which I'm most thankful and appreciative.

I learned that another disclocation of my shoulder at age 39 wasn't the end of the world.

Threw my can of chewing tobacco away, and started all over again with a little rubber band tube thingy, and 3 lb dumbells. (Buying three and eight pound dumbells can be humiliating. The guy asked me if I wanted a bag, to carry them out in.)

I have added tuna to my regular diet, and more water. I think a little bit more about food choices.

I crashed on new year when I got hurt. I am now doing real well, and can even do incline flys with 25 pounds in each hand. Some days its 30s depending on how things feel.

Gotta go,

Thanks to everybody,

A.G.

Well I can't say IOL got me into the gym but it has taught me the things I need to know to keep me there.

This is the one and only web site I use for questions I have concerning my training and diet. If it weren't for IOL I would have probably given up in frustration already. But everyone here is great and keep you going forward even when you want to step back.

I believe I joined in 2002 it was after 911 and after my mother-law passed away. I was inconsistent in my training for over 10 years and embarrassed by this fact as I was known as the “fit” guy the “muscle head” the “athlete” in the family. I had a heart scare that turned out to be anxiety and my family saying “See, you will end up like the rest of us.” It was too much to bare for me and then as I was searching the net I found Bill Pearl’s site and started his 20 month training routine, after month 2 I explored his links and saw DaveDraper.com I thought “Holy sh*t, he’s still around? No way he’s like the first muscle guy I ever saw.” Something to that effect anyway. I explored the site and later Laree advised me to join the yahoo group and so I joined I was reluctant at first to post because I was this has been weight lifter, out of shape and out of my element for so long. However my health was at risk so I took the plunge as I needed some answers some encouragement and at very least communicate with like minded people. I don’t remember how things started other than Chris McClinch welcomed me to the dark side of training as things picked up for me and I noted the changes. The HIT discussion was great I learned a lot from that one. Dan Martin is brutally honest and may offend some however to me it’s like talking to one of my family members except without all the cursing. Cajin is a warrior, I would like to work out with him someday he would put me through the paces for sure in fact I wouldn’t mind working out with anyone on this site regardless of experience. IOL has helped me be accountable for my health and my family’s health. There has been some opinions that have irked me and I thought about leaving however I think of IOL as my extended family and if we can’t b*tch to one another, then what’s the fun in that? I have thick skin and words on a site directed at me have little weight in this decision. IOL has helped build my confidence, my knowledge base and my body. I do hope to meet you some day and it is getting easier to make this happen as the future looks bright. Some of the things that stick with me are the challenges, the most lean muscle gain by year end for example which someone anonymously sent me a container of Bomber Blend for my achievement and Dr. Ken’s insights to HIT for making it happen for me. The challenges between Chris McClinch and me in our logs, the camaraderie this is what makes me come back, you don’t see this much in gyms anymore. I talk about IOL so often that my wife has browsed the site with me and would like to meet you all in fact the kids keep hearing about the bashes that they said we should have on in Canada which is a possibility.

I could go on however these are the things that stand out for me today, and as everyone else has said diet and recovery are having a greater impact on my training and I am finding a new love for higher volume and supersetting. I have of course left out names of people that helped along the way, you know who you are.

I also hope that people that lurk do post now and then.

What's Changed in Your Training and Diet Since IOL
11-25-12 10:17 PM - Post#754167

Confirmation that Volume training is acceptable (I tend to periodize it with heavier training w/less reps)

Ageless growth was new to me. The confirmation from experts that Creatine works well and is worth buying. Plus with heavy training I thought I had enough BCAA(s) from Whey untill this site. So I try to take my natural BCAA(s) evertime a train.

Light Squating before every workout to warm up and get a hGH response was new to me. I rarely practice this yet but will soon once I get a newer and better squat rack.

I like the Top Squat Idea because it adds functionability plus safety to the squat which helps me overcome my fear. I will be buying one soon since I am working again.

Confirmation that stiff arm pullovers or PULLDOWNS are okay to use. It was my first experimental exercise at the Nautilous gym and everyone kept trying to tell me how to do triceps LOL.

This site and DrSquat's has helped me keep ideas fresh and some new ideas entirely. Fred Hatfield actually recomended I visit the site and learn since scientific training was difficult for me.

Foam rollers was becoming popular and this site convinced me to buy it and I swear by foam rollers. I've seen and felt dramatic results using a $20 6 inch roller for under 5 minutes.
I think Draper's site (along with Hatfield's) has done done more for me and kept the BBing dream alive and active and more productive then any of the other sites, mags, and books. I'm glad Draper started the site in '99 and continues to teach, improve, and help people from all over the world,.
