Tye makes a good point...but that's only half the problem. The air cushioned shoes are the other half. Although your running shoes should have sufficient cushion to diminish heel strike shock, they still need to be firm enough to provide support. The squishy air soles make the need for strong ankles even more apparent, since they aren't firm enough to prevent lateral movement. The problems with the ankles get up the line to the knees and so forth.

An awful lot of military men run in boots....
