Greetings all,

I just want to state that I have really enjoyed interacting with you all these past few years. Since joining the Dan John Forum in April 2017, my whole approach to training has transformed for the better! I have learnt so much from each and everyone of you!

In fact, there was a time in my life a few years back when the Dan John Forum was the first thing I would log onto each morning. Discovering Dan John has been a Game changer and possible Life changer for me!

Sincerest thanks to Laree. You are a treasure!

To Dan Martin for your intelligent input and as Moderator.

And of coarse to Dan John. May you continue to write, teach and walk the walk!

Andrew Gunn

Thank you so much. This has been a joy. I reviewed some of the 2008 posts and I just have wonderful memories.

Always good to hear from you, Andrew!

Forty years ago, there was a movie, Uncommon Valor, with Gene Hackman. Perhaps, some of you have seen it.

Anyway, at one part in the film, Mr. Hackman's character is about to take his leave and quotes some lines from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. That scene always stuck with me.

So, I will quote from part of the same passage that Mr. Hackman's character did:

“ … whether we shall meet again, I know not.
Therefore our everlasting farewell take.
Forever and forever farewell …
If we do meet again, why we shall smile;
If not, why then this parting was well made.”

Thank you all.

This place of all things was where I learned more about lifelong fitness than anywhere else. I didn't have a background in lifting or team sports growing up. Just a broken down trail runner looking for something to do in the winter when I lived in Idaho.

Thanks for all the advice over the years.

Thank you Dan for everything, this post from my training log after your after your seminar in Brisbane back in 2019 sums it up for me. Thanks to all who have contributed here, I have learned so much over the years.

Andrew and I have been in contact and will meet up sometime a bit later.

Some exiting news I should have posted earlier:

I had the good fortune of meeting Dan John when he was here in Brisbane AU for a workshop back on the 18th & 19th of May.

My friend Piers Kwan from Queensland Kettlebells (a Strong First gym) sent a message on Saturday inviting me to hang out with Dan over dinner, but as I had been out all weekend I didn’t get the message till I arrived home around 6pm Sunday.

Tired, yes but I got a sudden burst of energy, Dan’s in town!! what an opportunity. I phoned Piers who said they were at Lord Stanley Hotel, East Brisbane, near his gym, and had just ordered dinner, so I had a quick snack and headed up the highway.

It was great to meet Dan and chat with him, Piers and the small group for around an hour.

I also had the opportunity to thank Dan in person for the influence he had had on my approach to training from my collection of Dan’s books and DVDs etc., going back to the Carried Away video purchased from Laree well before Dan’s Q&A started on IOL.

In addition to a conservative training philosophy, seeing Dan dragging a sled around in the snow made me realise that there was training to do outside my home gym, so started making use of my gentle sloping block with sled dragging and hill sprints on the steeper bank down the back.

It would have been great to have known he was coming and attended Dan’s full weekend workshop, but the bonus was that Piers had an autographed copy of Dan’s ‘40 Years with a Whistle’ for me back at the gym which I picked up two weeks later… haven’t finished it yet but it’s a great read.

For me, impressive doesn't half describe the fact that Dan would fly halfway around the planet to Australia to do just one weekend workshop.

Thanks Dan, it was great meeting you.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I've been interacting with Dan on forums since, I think, the end of the nineties - believe it was Andy's Old School Forum.

I'm older now than Dan was then.

As one sided relationships go, it's been fruitful. I haven't found everything Dan has said to be applicable - that'd be an impossible standard - but man, I think I've found more stuff from Dan useful than any one person.

Not just in lifting and fitness stuff. I use 'you're not good enough to be disappointed' talking to new writers a shocking amount.

So it's been good having this place, and you all. Last year was a bear healthwise - Covid, a heart attack, and a kidney stone, all of which were interconnected like stupid biological dominos - but I'm fine now, a lot of which is about doing reasonable, repeatable workouts.

Thanks!

I don't post a lot here but have pages of material I've discovered from everyone over the years that has added volumes to my exercise and nutrition knowledge base. I thank everyone for indulging my occasional neophyte questions and observations and will probably encounter you on other boards around the WWW.

All the best to all you fine gents.

Looking forward to shaking your digital hands elsewhere in the future, as “showing up” seems to be something this community is good at.

It’s a lesson well learned, Coach. One of many for which I offer endless gratitude.

Dan & Laree,

Thank you for a wonderful oasis in the World Wide Web. I know both of you have gone through a lot over the last few years and I wish you a well deserved rest and all the best in future endeavors.

Dan Martin, thank you for all the wisdom, moderation and of course, the DMPM.

To everyone else, I hope our paths cross again. I learned from all of you and I hope to pay that wisdom forward.
