Happily, he’s off the ventilator and is up and around a bit now. 45 days in ICU on a ventilator! Lost a ton of muscle weight, but it looks like he’s going to be okay. For those who are wondering, he had covid earlier, so didn’t get vaccinated because he thought he was immune due to the earlier infection.

For the most part, except in the very beginning of the pandemic, there was no real reason to think a previous Covid infection granted you a level of immunity. Yes, your body demonstrated development of some antibodies, but that sometimes is not enough.

If for no other reason, look at the "break through" infections of those that have been vaccinated as reason enough to get vaccinated.

As an aside, if Bill had gotten the vaccine initially, he might have avoided his first infection let alone a second infection.
Mark it Zero.

The Covid vaccine can be a touchy subject for many but the world has controlled plenty of diseases via vaccination. My mom had a smallpox scar so I wouldn't have to.

Prior to Vietnam - I "leaked" I had so many holes in me - we were "vaccinated" against everything I ever heard of - and some I had not heard of.. And no one asked my permission on any of them.

Actually, the available data do indicate that previous infection stimulates a level of immunity as good as or better than the vaccines but neither the infection nor any vaccine provides perfect immunity. The duration of the protection is also in doubt.

Ditto! Even after Vietnam, the multiple shots continued. On shot day in Basic, I don’t know how many shots I got, but there were people with vaccination guns on both sides of me as I walked the vax line.

Bill's book really resonated with me at the time

Ps. i manage a large indian development team. It was really horrific when the delta variant swept through india. I got to hear every day about family members and friends lost. Stop listening to disinformation and get vaccinated.

Ps2. I am shocked how whiny, entitled and selfish americans have gotten. I know the
"greatest generation" get's romanticized too much but i don't think they would have responded to this pandemic in the same way as we are now. The Greater good is what we should be thinking about....

I was born in 1954. The polio vaccine was widely distributed in the United States in 1955. My older sister told me we stood in line at a movie theater to receive our dose.

My parents did not hesitate or take a wait and see attitude. We were vaccinated against the polio virus.

I have relatives by blood and by marriage whose lives were devastated by polio.

Something to ponder: 168 million Americans have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. So 1/2 of 1% of all those vaccinated is roughly 84,000.

My point? Given those numbers, there should be a lot of empirical evidence of problems with the vaccine. But there isn't. There isn't even any anecdotal evidence of problems with the vaccine.

Of course people who are vaccinated are going to die. 16,000 people die every day in the United States from all causes. I don't want anyone to die needlessly from the Covid, but if someone deliberately avoids the vaccine and does not follow any of the recommendations of wearing a mask, following social distancing and practicing good hygiene, well, they have no one and I repeat no one to blame but themselves if they get ill.

Mark it Zero.

Have you heard of the VAERS database? There are reports of people having issues with the vaccine, it's just not reported in the media.
I'm not anti-vax, I just think it is important to have the full picture. A quick search on the database can show some of the reactions.

Every adverse event is reported, and studied by the regulators in every country, and they have independently all come to the conclusion that you're about 100 times likely to be harmed seriously by Covid than from the vaccine. And most reported events are of the nature of "I felt ill / had a sore arm for a couple of days".

Would you avoid exercise because there is a microscopic risk of hurting yourself, and a larger risk of DOMS? No, you'd say the benefits of exercise are well proven to outweigh the risks of serious injury or even of a sedentary life.

There comes a point where the body simply shuts down after enough weight/muscle loss. It appears as though Mr. Phillips benefitted from an above-average amount of muscle mass.

My reaction to jab #1 (February 4) happened almost 24 hours from getting the shot. Three hours of escalating discomfort that peaked as the feeling one gets when a flu has gone systemic and there's no turning back, then all at once it disappeared completely.

After jab #2 (March 4) of Moderna I took a Tylenol, the next day I had some general lethargy. From then on it was full steam ahead.

I just did a visit with a friend who lost his wife to Covid. The whole family got it; none vaccinated. She died.

I'm at a loss...

One thing to keep in mind about the VAERS database is that it a database of conditions that are self-reported AFTER vaccination, which doesn't necessarily mean they are REACTIONS TO vaccination.

From the article "Your Brain is Primed to Reach False Conclusions" (BTW, the article is pre-COVID):

Fivethirtyeight.com "Your Brain is Primed to Reach False Conclusions"

  • Quoting:
Paul Offit likes to tell a story about how his wife, pediatrician Bonnie Offit, was about to give a child a vaccination when the kid was struck by a seizure. Had she given the injection a minute sooner, Paul Offit says, it would surely have appeared as though the vaccine had caused the seizure and probably no study in the world would have convinced the parent otherwise. (The Offits have such studies at the ready — Paul is the director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and author of “Deadly Choices: How the Anti-Vaccine Movement Threatens Us All.”) Indeed, famous anti-vaxxer Jenny McCarthy has said her son’s autism and seizures are linked to “so many shots” because vaccinations preceded his symptoms.

But, as Offit’s story suggests, the fact that a child became sick after a vaccine is not strong evidence that the immunization was to blame. Psychologists have a name for the cognitive bias that makes us prone to assigning a causal relationship to two events simply because they happened one after the other: the “illusion of causality.”

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice; in practice, there is.

Just because it happened to you doesn't make it interesting.

Ditto,ditto.... It seems when I was in boot camp every couple of days we stood in line and got a shot in each shoulder. The only one I remember was for the swine flu that came around at that time.
