My hip mobility has reduced quite a bit over the years. I blame sitting.
This prevents me from doing kickboxing low kicks.
I also ocassionally feel a slight discomfort in the front of my right hip.
I believe it is due to weakness in one or more muscles. It could be a problem of muscle imbalances around the hip joint.
Could you recommend some functional exercises that could help with this?
I think it may be weak internal hip rotators (the external rotators get trained when I squat).
It may also be caused by a weak core. In particular I have read that suitcase carries may help with this: https://deansomerset.com/side-plank-internal-r otation-question-answered /
Anyone has any experience with this?

I've had a load of problems with bursitis in the hips over the years. My cure was:

a) retiring from competitive Muay Thai
B) band resisted clamshells, glute raises, knee raises, heel kickbacks etc etc

I do martial arts, too Consider your sleeping position. I get a lot of pain and tightness in one hip if I sleep on my side with my knees and hips bent, even if it's not a full fetal position. When I remind myself to sleep with mostly straight hips and knees, I don't get the pain or tightness.

You may have FAI. An MRI would make it clear.

In fact, I discovered my own FAI because of hip pain from Muay Thai. It’s literally impossible for me to kick with my right leg without grinding and tearing soft tissue.

Some people just aren’t made for fluid hips. I know I’m not, and I suspect it’s the most under-recognized issue in health/fitness. Starting Strength and similar books devote hundreds of pages to squat anatomy and physics without ever once mentioning that some people have “pistol grip” hips, as Dan has called them. For these people, training for hip mobility is only a fast track to degenerative arthritis.
