I think decision fatigue is one of the reasons the Bigger Faster Stronger total program is inviting to high school coaches. Its an organized and manageable turn key program.

Since I wrote the above, my gym has got equipment from a connected gym that closed. Now we have two different sets of weight plates. You cannot understand how crazy this makes me...

The nice thing about the book club is that you can jump in after the fact and give a review of a book you got around to reading.

The Good: I found the research really interesting, to have it spelled out exactly what is tiring on your subsequent willpower was enlightening. In terms of strength training, this is a definite vote for pre-packaged programs or for straightforward programming that takes out paralyzing amounts of choice.

For me personally, a point in the direction of Getting Things Done by David Allen (the Drew Carey example if your memory needs jogging) couldn't have been better timed as I'm entering a busy time with a lot of things to pull my attention in different directions.

It was also great to see something reinforcing the idea of lifelong changes taken one at a time versus the diet/exercise or other life habits taken all at once and then dropped all at once. This book makes a good pair with The Power of Habit (Duhigg). I think I'll reread the last chapter or potentially get it tattooed somewhere.

The Bad: Popular science books are kind of brutal for breezing over complicated science and sometimes dumb down the conclusions. I'm sure if I scratched the surface of the research presented there would be a lot more disputes and discussion. It's the balance between a good read and a view of the actual research that seems pretty hard to balance.

The Ugly: I always picture these authors stretching to make 300 pages. I think a series of articles could cover most of the research, and the rest is just anecdotal filler to string you along- in this case pleasurable but filler all the same.

Interesting- Three of the last books I've read:

The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

Willpower, Tierney and Baumeister

Getting Things Done, David Allen

Willpower put me on to Getting Things Done, and browsing around Allen's website I found an interview with Charles Duhigg by Allen. Small world- linked ideas here. Pretty good so far.
