Here in the province there are no stores to buy good gym equipment that could also get quite expensive if I order somewhere else. However there are a lot of metal resources and welders here. I'm planning to build my own gym equipment but I need help from you guys about gym equipment designs and dimensions especially the cable tower and pec deck machine. Any info on any equipment will be much appreciated. thanks!

I have built almost all of my equipment and if I can ever figure out how to put pictures here , you could take a look and then I can get you the needed dimensions. I was a welder/ fabricator for nearly 20 years so a lot of it was easy for me. The hard part you'll have is something like forming the nautilus shaped wheels for a machine like a pec deck , unless you have a nicely equiped shop. Let me know what it is you're interested in building , I'll see where I can pitch in. In the meantime I'll see about photos here.

Hi
I have made a lot of equipment at a low price. I have plans for wooden equipment as well as some dinosaur dungeon weights type also . One tip go to your local tractor dealer
and ask for any gears and or flywheels . some of the gears are perfect for plates and flywheels can be very heavy . most is scrap steel. I will also look up some plans I have found and I can help you design super heavy duty equipment. By the way Chuck Sipes ( One of the greats used to use railroad steel and wheels . I read that in a old Iron man once. I thank you Stingo for the compliment. Stingo is Great also But dont tell him. any way let me gather up some info and give me your email via the private email on this Forum . I will help you all I can
Regards Lonster

Hey, Lon, thanks for helping on this one.

If you can, could you post your ideas and plans here for our archive in case people are looking for this in the future? Or if your plans are in a word processing format, if you wanted to email it to me I could put it in a pdf and post it in the library forum.

If you decide not to make yourself. The best homemade equipment I've used is Jubinville. Just had a 3-tiered squat rack custom made for me. They'll make whatever you want, however you want it made. Good quality. Moved from Massachusetts to Michigan. E-mail address is : rjubin@deepnet.com if interested in ordering a catalog.

For specialty parts (i.e. block & tackle for pulley systems), I've seen some good (and strong) pulleys with specialized hardware at both brick and mortar and on-line marine stores.

On a slightly different note - I read an interesting article lately where they about "improvised" equipment. It seems that some of our military wanted to keep training despite the lack of good equipment where they were stationed, so they took different-sized milk jugs, filled them with cement & stuck metal rods in them to make barbells of different weights. Does anybody else have some good stories about "improvised" equipment?

I have used iron wagon wheels. The square center axels make for an interesting grip trick.

I've used cast lead dumbbells that I've cast myself from old wheelweights. Also, truck and automotive flywheels make serviceable plates.

Take a look at the website I'm linking below for a lot of pulleys, wheels and what not. There's a store less than a mile from my store, and they are great to walk thru and get some ideas.

Also, if there is a Mill's Fleet Farm in your area they may have a lot of things in regards to pulleys and so forth.

Those are some interesting improvisations Wicked Willie and CajinJon - I'm not to clear on the grip though - maybe I'm missing the mental picture of pressing/pulling the iron wagon wheel's axel :-)

Cool tool source shawnf. I checked-out their pulley systems - pretty interesting options for reasonable prices.

I spent the weekend with my family on a local island this weekend, and found that even driftwood (logs) can are usable for doing deadlifts or for BO rows. The only challenge is making sure they don't roll in the process :) They also make great raised handles for doing pushups (keeps your chest out of the sand) - especially with the beach's natural decline :)

I think that Cajin meant gripping the wheel's hub, which was for a square axle. Specifically, pinch gripping the hub while the wheel is horizontal.

can I buy these or do they have to be made by a welder? If by welder, how much would it costs to get something like this made?

Thanks!

The actual design by Vince that flares out to an angle where there is at least 32 inches between the bars...isn't produced by anyone that I know of except Larry Scott. His equipment, though of excellent quality, is unnecessarily expensive.

www.larryscott.com

His wall mount bars are right at $150 and a free standing unit is just under $400 dollars. Too rich for my blood.

If you're creative and not afraid to experiment...you could easily build a set of wall mounted, adjusted bars for about $50 dollars or less - using galvanized pipe, elbows and flanges available at almost any hardware store.

Alan Palmieri (who just started posting on this site) has an article about chinning and dipping at his site www.palmieribodybuilding.com that has a small picture showing the homemade bars that Alan has constructed...and that should give you an idea of how to go about the construction of your own bars.

Inexpensive dipping bars "V" or regular can be purchased or made in many different ways. The ones Wicked referred to in one of my articles has worked great for me over the years when I train at home.

Another very inexpensive way is to purchase two sets of saw horse brackets from almost any hardware store. Pick up enough 2x4's so you can assembly them to the height you want. You can move them around easily and set them for a "V" or parallel position. You can sand down the edges and with some work make it comfortable. I made some like these, not my favorites but they do work and it's cheap.

If you have em made, go with a 2 inch pipe, it will give a greater surface area for your palms, and will actualy give you more reps, not digging into your hands.

I have made dipping bars our of 2" pipe before but found them to be a little too big. I'm thinking about trying with inch and 1/2 pipe next time. Cheaper too. :)

Thanks for the great information everyone!

Great stuff from the Wicked One. Thing is, you have to know how to build things. The only thing I ever built was my deadlift platform, two pieces of plywood laid on top of each other. Then I had to think about it.

Nice job, Wicked.

Pete says:

You may already be aware of this dh, but, just in case, I bought 3 horse stall mats and laid them over 3 pieces of plywood and made a nice large deadlift platform. Not much construction to it, maybe a little duct tape here and there. I have a beautiful 12' X 6 ' area to drop weights on and it cost me less than $ 200.00. You could spend 4 or 5 times that much I think and not get as good a platform. ;>)

Absolutely, Pete. My platform is just 2 4x8x3/4 pieces of plywood with one inch pieces of rubber for the weights to set on. If you're good at doing it (which I'm not), building your own equipment will save you a buttload.

I should take a couple pictures of the dipping bars I made. If you can use a tape measure, hack saw and a drill you can build these. I'll even give the measurements I used.

Now, just have to find some time to do it.

If anyone has any homebuilt equipment...feel free to add it to the Wiki. That's what it's there for. Lon has a number of great homemade pieces in his gallery, check 'em out. A lot of his equipment is beyond my skills, I haven't learned to weld...yet. (When I do, WATCH OUT!)

Also, there are a lot of things that can be used for plates...such as old truck flywheels, after knocking the starter ring off. I used to love going to junkyards and salvage yards...just trying to find "stuff" that I could use.

The late Anthony Ditillo had an article in Muscular Development that he titled "Junkyard Gems." He had a number of nifty things he had found or crafted. One really stuck in my mind...he had taken two old bowling balls and a length of broomstick and created an "old timey" globe dumbbell. Total weight was only about 33 lbs. but did that ever look COOL!

Don't miss this, Bombers!

Lon Baldridge just sent me a number of plans for wood gym equipment and I've posted them in the Wiki database. Check them out in the Homemade Equipment section.

If you're at all handy with tools...some very nice equipment can be made.

Hi
I will add that I used casters that are rated for 900/1000 lbs . I just cut a grove in the center and it is one of the smoothest pulley ever and it is very strong. It is also been running for 20 plus years . I also used rough cut lumber which saves money and is true 4"x4" and smells great.
There are more pictures in the picture gallery under my name
Regard to all Thanks WW
