<"Can anyone recommend a decent (basic) software program for tracking your diet?">

There's DietPower, here:

http://www.dietpower.com/

And the ever-popular Fitday, here:

I know of an on-line program that is free, and lets you track not only your nutrition, but your training also! The place to find active log is Activelog.com. Let me know what you think of it.... Annette

I have friends who use Dietwatch.com which is also online and free. I just surfed over to check it out. It seems pretty basic but, hey, it's free!

I use Healthrunr.com. It's available for download at around $65 I think, but there's a free trial. I got it for free though, because I was a beta tester. It's not a bad program, it has virtually every food in it, and lets you choose daily targets/percentages that you'd like to reach in terms of your food intake. It's a bit cumbersome to start up but, overall, it's a good tool (when I remember/have patience enough to use it).

And from Susan:

I have been using Crosstrainer by Innovative Logic. It is a very good program for a reasonable price. It has a diet/nutrition component, but also allows for weight training and aerobic tracking. Hope that helps.

I use the software from calorieking.com on my Palm Pilot. I only use the food database and use an Excel-like spreadsheet to plan out my diet. While in contest mode, I plan my diet out rather than just track it. My diet is scripted.

I use pocket diet tracker which runs on my pocket pc. You can read about it on their webpage at pocketdiettracker.com

I've used it to go from 278 lbs and 37% bodyfat on 3/15/04 to 228 lbs and 16.25% body fat on 7/24/04. It's extremely easy to use and really helps you keep the food log straight.

Free Diet Tracking Spreadsheet,

This was recently posted on another forum, it was given freely to anyone that wanted it. Supplements should be added as an individual meal, pulldown meal selections are provided. This is a fantastic free resource, take a look and post comments.

There are a ton of great tools out there. My preference is with DietPower for a very specific reason. Most tools simply estimate the caloric budget based on equations. These equations can be well off - who really knows what their "activity factor" is, anyway? DietPower adjusts the budget based on the real world results and hones into the actual metabolic rate. In other words, when you faithfully log your nutrition and your estimates for exercise and your weight, DietPower figures out what your metabolism SHOULD BE based on those results ... I have been able to hit my target weight to a "T" every time when I use this software.

Jeremy,

You mention some very impressive features within Dietpower. When I placed the spreadsheet on the forum, it was not to detract from any other program. It was to directly ease a pain that I have in tracking my caloric intake, and that is time. I report my daily intake to a trainer, and his current spreadsheet does not have pulldowns for the meals, so a lot of effort goes into typing information over and over. So I started to program a new sheet from scratch. while I was doing that, another kind soul, posted his sheet on another forum. As soon as I saw his spreadsheet, I stopped working on mine, as it directly solved the problem that I have. The spreadsheet was nicely done, had pulldown meal menus, and provided the exact information my trainer wanted. So I wanted to share my happiness with my brothers and sisters.

I know that more can be tracked, and should be tracked, but there is always a price to pay for that. Right now I create a list of things to be accomplished every day when I get home from work. And every day, I throw away the list when I get home, because my Wife, or one of my 3 Sons has something that requires my attention, more that what I have planned. Things that I do not pass on, are my workouts, which are 3-4 times a week. When I heal up a little bit more from a surgery I had, then I will add back 2 additional days of Karate with the boys. So that is why I pay a trainer to pick up the coins off of the floor, while I worry about the dollars.

Regards
Vince
