Q - Anyone taking liver tabs or powder?
03-11-11 02:36 PM - Post#680738

Why liver tabs over real liver?
Are the tabs less calorically dense? Are there other reasons? Just curious.
Robert Kennedy wrote a nutrition book called "Supercut" a few years back that had a ton of liver recipes in it. One of them was a shake that had frozen raw liver in it.

*edit*
Now I'm hungry.

Probably because real levier is hard to carry around. I'm not trying to be a wise guy but that was the reason I took them

I thought Dave was kidding about the increase in endurance. However, it does appear that there might be validity to that statement.

I'll order some tomorrow along with my 6 pack of Bomber Blend.

well if you use aminos, bcaas, whole food or whey protein (or any combination) you may just use a 2 or 3 a day like a vitamin. In this manner its good for an energy boost from the vit C and enzymes.

now if you are looking to use them as a stand alone protein source or just to really ramp stuff up and see if you get a performance boost. well that takes way more tabs. 1 for every 10lbs of body weight or more.
I never went that route but if I did i would do them like fish oil start out slow and bump up the dose till you reach the upper limit.

Beverly's website has a lot info on it regarding dosage for use in that manner

Liver tablets, huh. That is old school nutrition. I do not mean that negatively because I am old school. This used to be a trend in the 60's. but has fallen out of favor over the years.

I remember when glandulars were the latest big thing. Orchic substance was supposed to be made from raw testicular glands, from bulls, I think. Can't understand why that never stood the test of time!

Its the nutritional factors that these "foods" contain that are more important than the foods themselves. The foods are just delivery systems.

Getting back to liver tabs. I have taken them. YUCK! I much prefer beef liver and onions. A much tastier delivery system!

About to start Using Liver Tablets
06-27-11 10:00 PM - Post#696036

Liver tabs have been the absolute best supplement that I have used and actually see and feel results.

I got started with them some time ago after buying a bunch of Gironda courses.

Having said that...

There are some important items:

1) You need to chew them up really really good for proper digestion to utilize the nutrition in them. This will take some time to get used to as the taste is not good at first. Nowadays I can eat them up like I would a handful of raisins.

2) For maximum results you need to eat 25+ per day. I eat 30-40 myself.

3) Avoid gas by eating them with your meals.

4) Start slow: 1-2 tabs with each meal, upping them as you your body gets used to it.

5) Enjoy the endurance, higher energy levels, and if you like the sun like me - an all around better tan.

6) And try not to eat them with starches. My meals are predominately meat and veggies, so they get to work pretty fast (no heavy carbs stopping or slowing down the absorption).

I have resumed using them after many years. I order Beverly Liver Tabs from Laree and they are much better than the Schiff liver tabs that I used in the 70's.

I have gotten a noticeable increase in energy, strength and muscle tone. I really believe that they are one of the most cost-efffective supps around.

I am 63 years old.

I have used them on and off for a long time. I believe they are useful for one thing, portable protein. I think the Beverly tabs are 2g of protein per, so I'd normally take 8-15 as part of a small meal. For example, a dozen liver tabs and one or two dozen almonds is a good snack. If you can't get a real lunch, a pint of whole milk and a dozen liver tabs will do until dinner.

I'd had no side effects and I take 25 concentrated tabs per day.

FWIW, I've dropped all other supplements (except a multi-vitamin) in favor of liver tabs.

I feel great, recover better, and generally have had better results in the gym.

They're extremely cost-effective and, most importantly, they work.

Yes I realized a huge difference when I started to grind them down to mush with little to no water, and during the middle of a meal.

If I ate them in between meals, gas occurred and that means that my body was not digesting them.

(might as well throw them in the toilet if you are getting bad gas)

Another tip:

If you must eat them on an empty stomach, and cannot digest them properly (gas), then try chewing them real good and following that with a teaspoon of fat (flax, coconut or fish oil).

For some reason, in the past, when I did this my body seemed to have digested them well.

Liver tabs are highly concentrated (31 grains I believe), so I guess they need a medium for absorption (food, better yet - fat).

I used the powder years ago, I don't think there is anything decent on the market now. It was pretty nasty, it could foul just about any drink. Raw liver in apple juice was about the same nasty.

Seeing how well the quality tabs break down, I don't worry about chewing them. I do remember getting horrible digestive unrest from the Universal tabs, which don't break down well, and at the time I had never heard of chewing them. The Beverly's don't seem to need to be chewed, and I doubt the Country Life and NSPs need to be chewed.

Mike Brown of Mike Brown Solutions still has Argentine Beef Liver Powder. Just like everything else he sells, it is over-hyped and over priced. Any desiccated (sp?) liver powder is pretty nasty.

Chew the tablets and wash 'em down with something. Easier than the powder....

So true. I used to drink liver powder I bought from Ricky the Rhino (RIP) at Zuver's Gym. Mixed it w cold water and held my nose. Drank it exclusively in our backyard, no matter the hour, in case I couldn't keep it down. Those were the days (not).

If you get used to the taste you can always by the powder form, it's much more inexpensive.

My 2 cents worth when talking about glandular or natural products. I heard they should not be heated above 100 degrees durring processing(including when shipped). It is better if they come from Kosher sources (jewish food quality/cleanliness law). There are probably many companies that vary in price and quality but I always go with the kosher company that does not exceed enzyme and nutrient destroying temperature.

Save your money and fry up some liver and onions twice a week, enough to take some to work for lunch the next day. 4 days a week ought to do just fine.

I had a hard time forgiving the late Norman Zale for recommending blending up a quarter pound of raw liver with six oranges...claiming that it tasted 1000 percent better than dessicated liver powder. I did so...and I disagree with both the concept and the percentage. Think it may even have been worse than Protein From the Sea....

Q - Anyone taking liver tabs or powder?
10-30-11 09:28 AM - Post#711003

I would go for NSP liver tabs but the shipping (i live in Sweden) makes them a bit to expensive. So I chew my Uni-liver tabs and keep them for a 1-2 minutes in my mouth so they'll mix properly with the saliva before swallowing.
At least I tell myself that it works....

I use Beverly International liver tabs exclusively.

I take the max dose (1 per 10 lbs. bodyweight) and I have noticed marked positive effects - better and faster recovery being the most prevalent.

A solid investment that I won't do without.

Took it regularly quite a few years ago and never noticed any effect so I finally gave it up. Gironda was a big proponent of it and that's why I gave it a long trial.

My experience was similar to the Judge's. Didn't notice a great increase in endurance, etc. as per all the claims. Did notice a slight difference when I discontinued it...energy sagged a bit. Was this a "real" effect or was it placebo?

Dunno.

The increasing lack of availability of desiccated liver in the stores I frequent was the main reason I discontinued it. Using less and less supplements over the years.

I did off and on over the years - still have some hanging around that I haven't used for a long time - a bottle of Beverly brand and Ron Kossloffs
brand - NSP. Didn't really notice any effects - took them as I am a Vince follower. I think I really stopped as I never got use to the taste of chewing them - it was always ann ordeal to get them down.
