DJ and other Tests
Get up – I hardly ever do these – don’t really “get the point” after you learn to do it. I can easily do an almost full glass of water or a 24K KB L&R handed. I imagine I could do a 32K if pressed.

KB Swings aren’t a favorite of mine – I get tired but in no specific way – I do them from time to time but they are not a staple. My go to posterior chain movement is banded glute hams and/or DL.

Standing long jump – My “aging” goal is to jump equal to my height or 74”. I can still do that fairly easily – last year’s best was 7’ 4”.

Best squat last year was 307# in a slightly wider than shoulder width touch and go style down to my bench press bench (not quite to actual parallel)

Our school has the Rogue foam jump boxes – which gave me the courage to try (and do) a 36” box jump – 42” was close but a miss – got my feet on but couldn’t rock on over to stand. My “jumping” abilities were one of the earliest things to go as I aged.

I can get up off the floor with no hands by crossing my legs and standing up – I do have to rock a good bit. Body proportions seem to play a role here.

Hangs – haven’t tested it in a long time – my right elbow is messed up and hurts when hanging.

Stand on one leg – between 45 and 60 seconds L&R – I do train this regularly.

Plank – I do these on my rings – between 1 and 2 minutes as part of my workout – I prefer ab wheel rollouts on knees, usually 30 to 50 reps. Can sloppily do a few on my feet.

If having a good “grip” is a longevity test – I might live a while yet. I do have an above average grip strength.

I gave getting to 200 lbs. my best shot about 40 years ago. Living in Santa Monica, CA, I joined Gold's Gym in Venice. When I walked in there, I was 170. I did get to 196 on the 7-8,000 calorie a day diet and 6 day a week routine they gave me. I only stayed that heavy for a few months. Reverting to a healthier diet, I dropped back to 175 lbs. and a 32" waist where I've been ever since. Height: just over 6'. I've shrunk. I used to be 6'1". Age: 65

Starting to prep for a Grand Canyon trip in May, so will probably lose ten pounds and put it right back on afterwards.

Same for everybody. That type of muscle fibers go first. One can train it to some degree and improve. The trick is to balance the training and do all types of training ,body is a functional machine.

Just under 6'5", 242 lbs, 38 inch waist. I qualify for the "waist less than half your height" but barely. The pandemic boosted my waist measurement by my lack of dietary discipline. When I was in a bit better shape during the summer my waist was smaller and I didn't worry about BMI, at least not as much as my 5'6" 140 pound doctor. Now the BMI stings because I had been doing well for so long.

Larry-wow, that's good!

You must have a really really small waist if you're only two inches taller than I am, 90-95lbs heavier and only have a 39 inch waist.

I know guys way shorter/lighter than you with 39 inch waists and/or bigger than that and I'm referring to military personnel too not just civilians.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those guys who everybody guesses my weight at 225. I just don't look like what I weigh. I'm retired from law enforcement and back in my twenties when I finished the academy I looked like a stick even though I weighed 270.

Wow! That's a HUGE difference! 225/295!! (70lbs!)

I know what you mean though as I'm 6'2 and because I'm slim, people always think I weigh less than what I do and am taller than what I am. It's like the height "hides" the weight or something )

Wow, I can't imagine a 270lber PT'ing at the academy!

I'm retired military but I've PT'd with military police and I tried out for the city of Signal Hill/LBC police dept. about 20 years ago. I remember the physical test (easiest part of the test) was short sprints, cutting movements, timed 440, dummy drags, getting over 6 ft walls quickly, etc.

Warrior,

That's funny because people think I'm taller than what I am, we must have the same body type.

I also was in the military, Navy Seabees so we got to PT with the Marines where I was stationed. The law enforcement agency I was in was the US Secret Service, the PT was pretty hard. We got up to 8 miles but never was a slow jog, it was all interval stuff like Indian runs (last guy sprints to the front), or every 1/2 mile we'd stop and do 2 minutes of whatever (push ups, sit up, we'd run with small Muay Thai punching pads and do 30 secs punches/elbows/knees/kick s) and then run again. Runs were after bodyweight exercises. Wish I was in that shape now....

Good question/answer from DJ here regarding blood pressure.

However, I posted it here as it's also about the guy's age, height, weight, waist size, etc.

The guy asking DJ the question says he's 28 years old, 6'2/255lbs with a 36 inch waist. I'm trying to figure out how that's possible.

If he's that tall/heavy, even with it mostly being muscle, his waist should be at least 38-40. A 36 inch waist is incredibly small for his height/weight and very rare. Most guys that are far slimmer than him at 6'2 and weighing say only 200, 210, 225 lbs have at least a 34-36 inch waist at a minimum. I don't know many guys any age, civilian, military, athletic or not that's got a 32 or 34 inch waist at 6'2 200-230lbs.........

This is based on my many years of administering waist measurements during the PT tests in the military, plus just reading through the responses here on this post/thread.

The link/youtube is below. Update for me, I'm 6'2, 215lbs with a 36 inch waist. I have work to do.

Anecdotally, most guys don't really know their height and exaggerate upwards, and use their pants measurement.

For context, Arnold claimed (in his prime) to be 6'2, 235 with a 35 inch waist. So even assuming Arnie was shorter and had a bigger waist, this dude in the video thinks he's more jacked than Arnold in his bodybuilding prime.

This feels...unlikely.

I also spent some time doing waist measurements in the military. I also had to be measured myself since I exceed the weight standards (33-35" waist, 205-225 lbs. during that time). My general impressions:
- Most who exceeded the body fat standard (via waist and neck measurements for men at the time) were indeed carrying more bodyfat than ideal.
- Occasionally someone who had an unusually small neck would get penalized in that system. I think they may have dropped the other measures and just do waist now.
- What most people thought was their waist measurement (pants size) was significantly smaller than their actual waist measurement.
- Once in a while you would get someone essentially doing a bodybuilding "bulk" who disputed the fact that their body fat was too high. They actually did have too much body fat.
- The new waist standards for scoring in the Air Force (in 2004) didn't realistically allow for everyone to "max" the points for the test. I recall the men needed something like 31"-32" waist at the time to get max points. That's not structurally possible for someone like me outside of perhaps very severe, prolonged starvation.

Absolutely spot on. I ran my Wing's Fitness Program from 2010-2014. By then, a 35" waist earned max points. The overwhelming majority of Airmen were in "decent" shape and the heavier members were usually overfat, though we did have a few members toting some extra muscle. They were definitely outliers.

My older stepson is 32 years old, 6'1" and ~255 lbs. His waist is no more than 38", I'd speculate 36~37". He is extraordinarily disciplined in his lifting and eats whatever he wants....on Thanksgiving and Christmas!! Otherwise, his diet is precise. He is an Assistant DA, drugs definitely do not come into play.

Justin-I hear you bro. I know my height and weight due to just retiring from the military a few years ago and I just went to my PCP Doctor a few days ago.

I agree with you though.

Kyle-first it's awkward doing it! )

Seriously, most people try to suck their guts in. A lot of people get mis taped and cheat purposely or inadvertently, big waisted guys used to get a pass if they measured with a big neck (which I agree with), and like I said.....that I've never heard of a guy any age, 6'2/255lbs with a 36 inch waist. Never.

Sean-all great points. However, a TON has changed even in the AF since 2004. Even since 2014 a few small things have changed. I retired in 2018. I was active duty, Traditional Air National Guard and Full time Air National Guard for a total of over 21 years. Father was Active Duty AF for 20 years and grandfater was a Marine and served in Korea and 'Nam.

Wx-nice bro! Yeah, I was a FAM (fitness assessment monitor), fitness program leader, rec sports captain (basketball, etc.) and even started a "track/PT/Fitness Ministry" from 1997-2018 at a handful of different bases.

The waist measurement in general isn't bad overall. DJ's recommendation of half of your height is pretty spot on general advice. The BMI chart is totally wrong and that's an entirely different story.

It sounds like most of you though generally agree that I'm not crazy. I personally have never seen a guy 6'2/255lbs with a 36 inch waist yes mayyyybe 37, 38......I don't care if he's mostly muscle or has some fat. His waist would be more like 38 mostly likely at least. I'm not saying they're fat either I'm merely expressing reluctance at the number given the height/weight.

You're not supposed to "suck in" on the test although many people do and cheat.

I guess it's possible but very rare in my 30 years of experience. Your step son must have an incredible V shape going on with a lot of muscle.

My other chaplain assistant I worked with while deployed in Kuwait was far more muscular than I am/was. He wasn't athletic at all but very "buff." However, even though he had a waist of around 32-34 inches, he was also only 6'0/6'1 and roughly 225lbs.

He also benched 405 and was the most buff guy we had. Haven't ran into too many of him in my career though. So a guy with another 25/30 lbs than my friend (the youtuber guy asking DJ questions) even IF he's mostly muscle would have to have at least a 37/38 inch or bigger waist. Again, unless this guy is a genetic freak, super V shaped out and rare.

Not saying it's not possible but definitely not the norm by ANY means based on not only my experience but the charts' data.

I mean some guys know their height but most generally don't and/or exaggerate. Anecdotally I am six feet barefoot, and almost every "I'm six feet tall" guy I've ever met was visibly shorter than me.

I joke that I'm dating site 6'3

Thanks for the responses. It seems the waist measurement is pretty solid as a measure of overall body composition. Now the followup is: did this correlate to anything like run times etc?

Obviously waist size is going to match long-term health outcomes. But what about performance in the all-round military stuff (as opposed to single event stuff like marathons or hammer throw)?
