A few days ago I was watching a Mark Wildman video and he was doing an unboxing of slam balls he received. The largest was 50 lbs. I didn't know they made slam balls that heavy (I found out later they can go up to 150 lbs). At the gym I went to pre-covid they had 8 lb balls. Intrigued, I ordered a 50 lb ball and I am waiting to receive it.

I was wondering if anyone uses the heavy slam balls in their training. How do you program it and what exercises do you do? I went to YouTube but most of the videos are with the lighter balls. I'm planning on tosses and overhead slams but I was curious if there anyone uses it for anything else.

Done Throws around Sprints (overhead, forward, up in the air, kneeling) - main limitation really is finding somewhere to throw something that heavy that won't smash a wall/a floor/somebody's cranium to bits

I have 20 pounder, I slam it into the pavement outside and throw it in a wide variety of ways. Indoors, I lay on my back and try to throw it to the basement ceiling. Throwing it tells me if I am getting more explosive. I see it as a tester not a builder. I think it is worth having.
Good luck, Jim

Matt, I plan on using it mostly outdoors since my wife warned not to slam it indoors. I hadn't considered kneeling throws. Thanks.

Thanks Jim. I don't think I will use it lying on my back and throwing it up. I don't like the idea of a 50 lb ball coming down towards my head.

I have a 50 pounder, and I've used it in a variety of ways:

As a conditioning tool I pick it up from a hinge position (think loaded position of a swing) and when I get to standing I push the ball down back to the ground. I don't know if these have a name, but it's a fairly explosive movement with a quick turn around.

I've also used it as a slower paced GPP tool and pick it up and do a variety of carries (shoulder rack, overhead, etc), and either throw in goblet-style/zercher squats or squat with it separately.

When I train outside I get into a hinge position and throw it overhead and behind me. The throw is similar to what I've seen in strength competitions when they take a keg and try to get it over a beam that looks like a pole vault set-up. It's basically an explosive swing, but instead of the weight ending up in front of you at hip or chest height it travels over your head and behind. From there you can jog (or sprint) to it and repeat.

I basically use it like a kettlebell, but because it's soft it's much easier to carry, change positions with, and throw I tend to 'wrestle' with it in a sort of circuit fashion. Of course I can't clean or snatch it, but I've found it great for that sort of 'dinosaur style' training.

I don't have anywhere near 50lb's, but have used mine for shoulder, overhead, bead hug carries.

Clean and press (keeping a hold of it).

Clean and press throwing it infront of me and sprinting after it (the throw is about 15ft, the sprinting about 40ft, walk back and repeat).

Chest hold hinging.

Overhead/high throwing.

All lots of fun really.

There was a couple of days during lockdown were I couldn't really decided upon how I wanted to move....I ended up just picking up the ball and playing around with lifting it up/putting it down, throws and sprints.

The strongman keg toss was one of the ideas I had. I'm glad to see it work for that

Richard, I like this idea. A fun way to work on conditioning.

You might want to see whether Ross Enamait has something on that. As far as I remember -- and I might be wrong -- he did lots of stuff with homemade sandbags and medicine balls, including throwing them.

Impressive president! I hear (and it's clear enough from his appearance) that Obama kept in shape too. Any more stories on how presidents did it?

George W. Bush was well known as a very fit and strong mountain bike rider. A female friend who was assigned to his Secret Service detail at the time would always be required to travel with W on trips to his Texas ranch, as she was one of the few agents who could keep up with him on the long rides he liked to take when he was there.

Matt

I've done it with an 8 lb ball. With a 50lb it should be real interesting.

Just an update. I received the 50 lb ball yesterday. I took it out to my driveway and shouldered, slammed and tossed it for 20 minutes. This morning I feel like I was hit with a stick. It should be interesting going forward.
