Hi all,

This is my first time writing here. I am just an ordinary recreational strength trainee training for health, strength and gains.

I am currently hospitalized avaiting a possible removal of my colon due to IBD and getting a stoma, Since the operation will not be urgent, I have some time to considering how to get the most off of it.
Do anyone of you have any experience with strength training with a stoma? Anyhoo thoughts on special considerations needing to be taken? E.g. on placement of stoma to allow for squats and deadlifts on taking creatine?

I have asked the same quesion on the Stronger by Science Facebook Community and reached out to John Meadows. But as a long time reader of this forum maybe some of you have a different perspective or wisdom to share?

Regards,
Rasmus Just

I have nothing to say, but wishing you a speedy recovery.

Well, I'm not one for medical advice but I can only say that, if it is okay with all of our forum, we walk with you.

You can reach out to me (us) here or in private. Just let me know what we can do to assist.

I know that you will be able to train somehow. I also know this training will help. I just don't yet know the details.

Your age and a couple of other pieces of information will help down the road. First, do what has to be done. Then we can talk reps and sets.

I have only dealt with bones and joints in my life. My doctors have said, every single time, that my dedication to rehab has put me in rare air.

Just reaching out to this forum is an excellent set. Stay positive. Youtube has Earl Nightingale's Lead the Field; I always get recharged listening to him.

My Dad had that procedure due to ulcerative colitis. Initially he had a bit of adjustment, but once everything settled it was quite liberating.

iPood and Laree,

Thanks for the kind words.

DanMartin,

As the inflammation is limited to the colon, the hope and expectations are the same here. That by removing the colon the disease is cured and I can go back to living an almost normal life without going in and out of hospitals and getting ill all the time.

Dan John,

No medical advice expected. I just needed to reach out somehow and start thinking on the possibilities for the time after the operation.

I spend the day talking with doctors and nurses preparing for the operation and the time after. Right now I am out of hospital, but will go back Sunday and be operated on Monday. If all goes well I will be out of hospital Friday next week.

As the operation involves some of the "core" muscles, it looks like training with weights may be a bit out. Maybe I will reframe the months after the operation as base building with maintenance of fat free mass or something like that.

My age and other stats are:
Sex: Male
Age: 39
Weight: 112 kg (247 lbs)
Height: 187 cm (6'2'')
Waist: 122 cm

Today I went for a walk just to be bit active after eight days in the hospital. The next couple of days the focus is preparing for the operation and stay as healthy as possible up to it.

Regards,
Rasmus Just

MrDave100 and Diablo,

Thank you.

To all,

A quick update. I had the surgery Monday morning and all went well. I will be hospilized untill the body carms down and the stoma works properly. Most likely I am going home Friday and will then have two weeks of recovery before returning to a normal workday.

It turns out that the issue with the 'core' muscles are a risk of developing a hernia. It will be a about three months recovery before starting with the weights again. But I have a rehab program to follow and can walk, run etc in the meantime.

Once Im cleared for using weights I have to start light and probably avoid the heaviest weights. So more of a muscle building focus in the future.

Rasmus Just

Thank you to WxHerk as well!

A short update:

As written, I was in surgery Monday January 25th. I was release from the hospital already Thursday January 28th.

Since then I've been going for at short walk every day. The first three days only 1.4 km. Last week 2.5 km, and today 2.8 km. It is just a short walk to the nearest grocery store, which I increases a bit once a week. Even though I don't pressure myself the pace has decreased from over 16 min/km to about 12 min/km. So I'm pretty happy about that.

I'll keep gradually increase the walk distance the next couple of weeks and focus on learning to live with a stoma.

In the beginning I got help every day with changing the pouch. I am down to every other day now. Other than that, there is some getting use to regarding food and drink, but I am getting a handle on that as well.

Overall things is looking good!

Hopefully I'll be ready to start Andrew Read's Walk/Run 2.0 program in a couple of weeks. I learned about the program on this forum some years ago. It has work well for me in the past, when I needed to get back from injury or illness. So that will be my focus until I'm cleared to start lifting weights again.

Regards,

Rasmus Just

Absolutely!!

Great to see you walking farther and faster. It's certainly the Journey and not the Inn in your case.

I believe that your terrific attitude will play a big part in your recovery. So much of life is mindset and you are surely displaying a fantastic one!

Another "short" update!

Steve Rogers and WxHerk, thanks for you replies. It means a lot!

Last Monday I increased the walking to 3.5 km and today to 4.7 km. Again, nothing programmed other than I just add a bit to the detour I take to the local grocery shop every Monday. The great thing is, I am almost circling my small town with that detour now.

Some days I still feel the abdominal area during the walks. Almost as I get a light side stich. So I take the days as they come. Some days I walk slower than others. But the walks are still around 5 km/h and even though I had a side stich today, I still did it with an 11:48/km pace (faster than 5 km/h!).

Anyway, I think I better wait a couple of weeks till I start the run/walk program. But with no panic, I am still adding a bit of distance every week. Progress is progress however small!

And I did a bit of very light gardening today too (here in Denmark we went from freezing Winter to Spring in two days, so there is some leftover gardening waiting. Luckily it can all be done a bit by a bit).

Regards,
Rasmus Just

Dan, again, thank you for the answer.

I lived in Odense during my high school years, so if you need a tour let me know. The tour will mostly be beers, pizzas and OB (Odense Boldklub - the big soccer team in the town). That what I learned about during those years (and a lot of a nerdy stuff - but that is better discussed over the beers).

I live on Sjælland now (born and raised there), so if you need it, you have a couch to stay on here! (and my friends tell me, that I am a petty good chef, so you will not starve)

Same goes to the rest of you who answered. I do not want to go blurry eyed, but it means a lot that you answered. I have read this forum for years and while I may not have added much myself, I have a great respect to you all.

I hope to reflect on this experience and give some back later.

The Milling Hotel? I was once there as a child for a 80 year birthday some 30 years ago. Still remember the place. Better than a couch in Havdrup for sure!

To be honest, I think the next workshop in Odense will not be before 2022. We will be hit by the 3rd covid wave the next couple of months in Denmark. Driven by the British B117 strain.

However, whenever the next time comes, I will be honored, that you were honored, that I came.

Sorry for the thread revival.

Just wanted to post the attached stats from my walk today. An un-expected post op PR in walking pace. First time I am below 11:00/km!

Progress is progress, however small! Cannot say, that I am wise enough to live by that, but I try!

That is excellent!! I believe Confucius said that a thousand mile journey starts with a single step; looks like you're gonna be "getting there" sooner than expected at your pace!!
