Basically hit the wall with low rep strength training and kettlebell minimalist workouts. Spent a decade studying this approach and it worked well alongside a minimalist approach to programming. I noticed however that my scale weight was creeping up and body comp was going south as well. I track cals most days so nutrition didn’t change much in that time

Anyhow dusted down Dave's body revival off the top shelf and got to work 3 weeks ago on a high volume full body routine from the book. 3 days a week and kept daily steps the same along with nutrition.
3 weeks later and I’m 5 lbs down and my body comp is starting to change.. great buzz coming out of the gym and enjoying my training immensely... I’m sure I’ll revisit the other approach down the line but in the meantime..... thanks Dave...

Volume training is very underrated.

I've been thinking of going this route for a while now. Make it exercise with weights, as opposed to some kind of weight training. Not sure that makes sense but I'm thinking sets of 10-12 with a good amount of weight that can raise the pulse.

What is your age?

How many years have you been weight training?

What is your end goal?

Do you care about long term health or only bring big and strong now?

Hey Aron,
I’m 42. Weight training since I was 16. Used it to supplement sports, primarily soccer and Gaelic football. In my 30s went back to marital arts, boxing, Krav M. Found kettlebells, completed SFG and competed in TSC and some comps. Was going to BJJ for 8 months prior to COVD and then found myself starting to add pounds over quarantine inspite of consistent training.
Goals are simple to drop Bf and tighten up body comp. I will run Daves program for another 8 weeks and review after the festive season. It’s enlightening to read Daves work. The concept of developing a pace to a workout is something I haven’t considered before. Pure strength workouts for me involved long rests and lots of stretching. I’m working at a good clip to get round my current routine. As Dave says I can see a narrowing of the hips and a broadening of the shoulders..so will continue on my current trajectory

I've been thinking of the same thing doing 10 sets versus 4-5 sets, and keeping the exercises limited.

I've been thinking of buying a New Commercial Sit up bench for $800 and it weighs 175lbs as I do not like flimsy workout equipment but everytime I go to buy it I say $800! I run for Free, and I have 2,000lbs of dumbbells that are Free. You get to a point to where you just do not want to buy big heavy exercise equipment anymore especially since I give it away everytime I move. I saw Herschel Walker the famous football player doing situps with his legs up on a Big Old Tire. He does calisthenics that are free. Why pay a fortune for exercise equipment?

Because you can never have too many places to hang still-damp laundry?
Why are you squatting in the curl rack?

Hahaha! Hey, I was gettin' a wee bit behind with doing laundry. Just didn't wanna have anything to do with it. Kept buying new socks, underwear and T-shirts instead. Wound up with a huge pile of the dirty stuff that overflowed outta the laundry hamper all over the floor over the months.

So I went out and bought a second laundry hamper.
Problem solved!

You can never have too many laundry hampers or too much lifting gear, I figure.

This discussion is always interesting and there are those who love strength training - low reps/heavy weight. There are those who love moderate resistance and high sets/reps. I have been training for over 60 years and made more muscular gains after the age of mid-40's when I changed from heavy weights to volume training. As I got older, I found that training each muscle part once per week - training 3 or 4 times a week - worked best. After all these decades of training, I am in the best shape of my life at 72.

You can train for strength - lift max weights and gain some muscle and lots of strength.

You can train for muscle and conditioning - lift moderate weights with short rest periods, high sets and reps. You will gain more muscle and some strength.

One must decide what they want to accomplish.

When I am at a store or in a restaurant and a stranger asks me where I train or if I lift weights, I tell them I don't lift weights. I exercise with weights. There is a difference. I see guys in the gym who I have seen for over 15 years. They are much stronger than me but outside the gym, no one would know they workout. They never look any different.

So, what is your goal? Strength with some muscle growth or muscle growth first with some strength? Choose.

You need to go low reps with HEAVY weight for any real strength gains but, boy, can it fuck up the joints long term.
