Just heard about this thing in the UK...

https://www.nationalfitnessgames.com/

Looks fun and seems saner and safer than CrossFit, and with a team aspect. Some people from good sports universities and rugby teams behind it. And I like the team concept - you could have specialists in different areas in your team.

Are people aware of other similar things around the world?

I have no personal interest in this, just heard about it from my masseur, whose gym is raising a team.

Actually, I realised I do have an interest ;-) I'm making a software platform to manage Track and Field competitions, with judges recording on phones, and team scoring and results on the web. So, as I wait for the rain to stop, I'm idly amusing myself trying to figure out all the different types of things you might 'record and score' in fitness sports, to see what extra screens we'd need...here's what I came up with..

1. Races - shortest time wins
2. Endurance challenges - longest duration wins
2. Distance events (throws, jumps) - usually your best single attempt counts
3. Progressive elimination -bar goes up, or weight goes up, you either make it or don't
4. A general 'positive score' - could be rep counts, distance or time carried...calories burned in the NFG above!
5. Closest to a target value (e.g. 12:00 position in caber toss)

Can anyone think of other ways of scoring, from obscure sporting events you know?

By the way, I was amused to find out SportsHall Athletics (indoor format for kids in UK) has a modified caber toss for kids! presumably most popular in Scotland...

Thanks, all!

Interesting though perusing the site I see nothing explicit about the events contested. The photos provide some idea but things to be less fuzzy.

I had a similar idea recently for Seniors.

What if we could create a sport that would be friendly competitive and at the same increase fitness in the senior population?

Potato-race
Stone-throwing at objects
Balancing
Crawling under obstacles

Deductions for technical flaws, as in ice skating or gymnastics.

I'm the same age as Dan John, I started Judo two years ago. The old guy Judo division is amazing, it has redefened for me what old guys are capable of. I can't recommend it enough - find a sane club and give it a go. I never thought I would enjoy competing in my 60s but it is great all over again. Good luck,
Jim

Thanks Old Miler. I get the impression that the events may vary from one competition to the next.

Yes, they do say that, and since there has only been one I guess that gives a feel for it. Still, nothing sounds obviously dangerous.

I'm not sure how it would work out trying to test all those qualities in half a day. Probably some interesting team discussions around who goes how hard on which events.

With some warning of the potential events this could be fun. One of the things I liked about the Highland Games was challenges specific to particular venues. One games might have a farmer walk in addition to the throwing, another a kilted mile, and my favorite was the challenge stone at the Frozen Stones Highland Games with a 100# stone and 6 inches of snow on the ground on 1 Jan 2013 in Twin Falls, Idaho. I was glad to hoist it and get it past my toes if though only by couple of feet. It seems that they haven't hosted that event since 2015, mores the pity.
