Dave wrote about pullovers in this Q&A recently: Link

Coincidentally I found this article on the compound exercise "Pullover and Press" on the internet from an old issue of Strength and Health magazine.

You can enlarge it by right-clicking on the image and opening it in a new window to read.

(One caveat that allowed safer performance of this exercise was older style benches were closer to the floor than those available in modern gyms):

I rarely saw Dave do a workout that didn’t have pullovers somewhere in the mix.

Totally makes sense for shoulder mobility, all other awesomeness, aside.

It's hard for me to imagine trying to do a pullover with the amount of weight shown in those photos.

Oh Yeah! Steve Stanko was one strong dude.
Check out the bench in the bottom photo.

Big weights on a small bench. It's a rarity nowadays.

Love it! The equipment ain't the main thing.
It's the person using it. Yes!

Steve Stanko was a beast before he started focusing on pullovers. Attack them just like any other movement, one bite at a time, like eating a sandwich.

The 1st Gym I went to in mid '60's Salford UK had benches made from wood in an old factory building.

Hello Henry!

The first bench I had was pretty cool and I had so much fun using it. Actually it was a home made ab board in my Dad's garage on a couple of Coke crates I pinched from the pop trucking place a block away one night.

Stapled some leftover leatherette (remember that? or was it naugahyde? Car coat? Remember them?), onto pieces of foam I found in that garage. Hopefully it wasn't some sort of asbestos danger-foam or something, but I guess not 'cause I'm still alive, breathing and wheezing with joy.

Used it as an ab slant board by nailing some wood between the joists and just sticking the thing on 'em at different angles of intensity. An old belt at the top to hold myself down with. And to hang on to when doing leg raises the Sergio way without touching feet to ground between reps. Little did I know it was actually the Chuck Sipes way, but mags were scarce, eh.

No stands, um, squat stands to use at that point, so benching was clean and sit. Wonderful! No less important than the biggest bestest piece of gear in the most expensive gym I'll ever lay eyes on.

It might be important to take that joy, carry that high of enjoyment with us no matter what equipment we're lying on.

Laying on?
Praying on?
All of the above!

Ha ha Naugahyde: An American brand introduced by Uniroyal. My dad had a handbag factory using imitation leathers and snakeskin.

Nice exercise.

The French Press and the dumbell pullover are great. I like to do dumbbell pullovers with my my feet lifted in the air in order to ensure my back stays flat plus it helps with balance. Thanks.

The stuff had its own unique way of wrinkling like nothing else. But there's some form of weird beauty in pretty much everything, I guess.

You use that to do your french presses with? Or you keep your maple syrup in for pancakes? LOL

I think I'd prefer raw wood over the plastic stuffs. Once the splinters are gone anyhow.

Anyone else get buggy elbows from doing the french press?

The True Canadian will grow a Maple tree and coerce the shape of a flat bench out of it. Still living, once his workout's over a handy tap on one of the legs will dole out servings of maple syrup for the post workout meal.

Oh yeah. Lying extensions do that to me especially fast. The overhead ones not so soon. Oddly enough pressdowns, no matter how heavy or how low the reps just don't give me trouble.

Go figure, eh.

BUT . . . I've never done French Canadian Presses.

Steve Stanko (York Barbell) was the first lifter to total over 1000 pounds in the (then) three lifts. He went on to win Mr America and Mr Universe.

He was also capable of performing three one-arm chins, which is exceptional at any weight but for someone over 200 plus pounds that is phenomenal.

Josh (IOL member Man from Taco) posted Steve Stanko's arm training routine on his blog at this:

Bill Starr:

"Steve Stanko told me that there was only a flat bench in the small room where he trained in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, before moving to York, Pennsylvania. So in order to do bench presses, he had to lie on the bench and pull the bar from the floor up over his head and place it on his chest (pullover). After he finished his set, he would lower the bar as carefully as he could back to the floor. He credited that movement with his exceptional upper-body strength."

It's got a strange but beautiful way of working out sometimes, this life deal, doesn't it! For Stanko in this case, lacking something turned into gaining something of even more value. Of course, the main thing is the fact that, no matter his equipment in that earlier gym, he worked hard with what he had.

I think the lack of options in equipment (and minimal sources of training information - providing it is sound) is actually a real advantage as it forces the trainee to focus on the key fundamental of resistance training, namely it being progressive.

Relatedly, your latest blogpost on squatting mentioned you had not saved the photo of Peary Rader. Is this the one you were thinking of?
