LeGuin is one of my favorite authors, and in honor of her passing, I decided to revisit some of her books. Re-reading the Wizard of Earthsea, and I came across this quote, which my father was fond of, and which reminded me of Dan John

Coach,

I will be interested to hear your take--especially as a Harry Potter fan.

Vegpedlr

In the interest of full disclosure, I love LeGuin's work, and have yet to read anything of hers I didn't like. Her stuff is brilliant.

If you liked Left Hand of Darkness, the other books in her Hainish "series" are all excellent. The Dispossessed often gets really favorable reviews, though they're all great.

For short stories, the Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is a classic.

She wrote three more Earthsea books after the original trilogy. They are excellent, but different from the original. She also wrote a different young adult series, that starts with Gifts, which is good. Not Earthsea, but good.

I'd have to go check my shelves...I really think you cannot go wrong with her.

Coach,

I'm glad you like it, but I get almost zero credit for it. It's from Tony Blauer, who I got most of my self-defense training and a good deal of coaching advice from. I may have streamlined it (I honestly cannot remember if he presents it in that exact format), but the idea wasn't mine.

The Dispossessed sounds like the one I should try. When I finish my current foray into cyberpunk.

Like I said, you really can't make a bad choice, but the Dispossessed is fantastic.

When I got to "Go to sleep, tired is stupid," I thought of this great forum.

I enjoy the book. It's taken a turn or two I didn't expect.

It is a perfect "in flight" book. Things move fast, they connect, and there are a few nice twists that tie everything back together. I enjoyed it.

The rest of the series is also pretty solid.

(Totally unrelated, but Lavinia is LeGuin's take on the Aenied. Might be in the wheelhouse of some of the folks here)

I just finished this. I really enjoyed it. I couldn't help thinking that that there was an explicit connection with Lord of the Rings. Almost as if this was a part of that world. There was even mention of wizards with "the white" at the end of their names. I think one of the most subtle parts of the story is what happens with Jasper. Spoiler- He goads Ged to calling up a spirit along with a wraith/shadow, and then just fades away because he wasn't a true mage anyway. It's not an enemy that needs to be vanquished, it's Ged's own egotism and need to prove himself that are the problem and bringing those back to himself. Pretty straight Jung idea of the shadow. I'm always impressed when these kids or young adult books are a good read.

Definitely not directly connected to the Lord of the Rings. If anything, some of LeGuins writing is a reaction to some issues she saw in LOTR and other popular fantasy. The rest of the series explores her world in some interesting ways. It’s very different

(Both are excellent, btw. Tolkien is one of my favorite writers)

I hadn’t thought about how jasper disappears in the story. Neat observation.

Over the last couple of months, I've finished plowing through this series (there are six books in all). It's fascinating watching how LeGuin's relationship with the world changes as she ages. Some characters move off-stage, new ones come on, old one's become more significant. Questions about death become much more prominent, especially by the end.

I finished Left Hand of Darkness some weeks ago and I was just thinking of reading the Earthsea series again.

I don't remember how many books were in the series when I read it for the first time as a teenager (maybe three?). Then I read it again in 2002, it is definitely in the top 5 fantasy series for me.

Very excited it has expanded to 6 books, I think I'll have to get the "The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition". Time to read them all before I'm 50!
