This isn't a suggestion for any kind of discussion, it's just a heads up on a book coming out tomorrow that I'm liking and learning with.

12 Rules for Life: An Antidote Chaos
by Jordan B. Peterson.

https://www.amazon.com/12-Rules-Life-Antidot e-Chaos/dp/0345816021/ref =tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encodi ng=UTF...

There's always 'proof' copies available early for most books. Not quite polished up to the final product yet, sometimes without illustrations and a finished index, or page numbering. Those are great!

A good book!

Pre-ordered my copy before Xmas, it arrived last Friday, not had chance to read it yet but am strangely excited by the prospect.

If you haven't already, listen to his biblical series of podcasts available on youtube or directly at his site. I'm not religious in any way shape or form but that series of podcasts is absolutely mind blowing, hence me buying the book. I've never pre-ordered a book in my life!!

amazing stuff.

enjoy enjoy enjoy

I have watched his Maps of Meaning lecture series and will definitely follow up with the others once I have the time.

It was fascinating to learn about the archetypal structures in basically all great stories, just as Dan regularly brings up the Gilgamesh.

I had the book pre-ordered after listening to all the podcast episodes. Honestly, I had never expected to find interest in the biblical stories, but after getting an understand what they mean, what they stand for, what the idea of god represents, I actually bought a bible and read the stories along the lectures. Without the discussions I'd not be able to get the stories as they are so dense.
I'd love to hear Dan speak about Genesis, but I couldn't find anything online.
A discussion of Dan and Jordan Peterson would be hihgly interesting as well.

I’m part way through both Maps of Meaning and 12 Rules for Life. I’ve also listed to the podcasts of most of his lectures, including maps of meaning and the psychological significance of the biblical stories, and am starting another run through.

It is all far too rich and deep for me to absorb in a single sitting, which is why I’ve been plugging away at it for some time and just letting it drip into my consciousness.

Take the concept from Maps of Meaning which I have endeavored to express in my own terms as something like this:

There is an objective world and a subjective world.

The objective world is the world of facts and objects. It is described using the scientific method, which strives to find objective truths about the world.

The subjective world is the world of experience, values, emotions and motivations. It is described in art, literature and mythology. It is not reducible to objective truths.

Historically, myths and religious beliefs purported to explain both the objective world and the subjective world. We rightly reject them as explaining the world of things. But the scientific method alone gives us no values or tools to enable us to decide how to act. Myths and religious beliefs still tell us something about a distilled cultural wisdom as to values, which in turn guide us as to how to act in a given situation.

Albeit, Peterson perhaps would say that myths and religious beliefs never purported to explain the objective world and that they were only ever concerned with the subjective since the very idea of an objective rationally ascertainable reality is so recent in human history.

Or his articulation of the psychological significance of God as a representation of the greatest conceivable good.

Or take the idea that a dragon (i.e. a fire breathing, winged, cat serpent) represents the 4 things that kill primates (fire, large birds of prey, serpents and big cats). But if you can master them you get the girl and the gold.

So much gold to mine. I’m going to be digging for quite some time.

The biblical series and some of the earlier lectures have genuinely changed my entire perception of being on earth. It really has made me question most of what I thought, or hadn't even thought about.

When my father had a brain haemorrhage I looked up toward the sky and shook my fists and asked why? Why him, why us, why? I was angry at the very nature of being. I was bitter at the world. It was hell on earth.

I stumbled across Dr Petersons lectures whilst listening to Jocko Willinks podcast. I listened to his explanation of what I was actually going through. It made perfect sense.

I wasn't expecting that at all.

Mind blowing. I am on myy 3rd or 4th trek through some of the lecture series now and each time I hear something I hadn't previously heard. My mind drifts as I try to unravel what I've just been told.

Fascinating.

If you're a human being living on earth then there's something in these lectures for absolutely everyone. If you're not a human being living on earth, please get in touch.........

12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos

All the 12 rules are highly practical. Peterson mixes private and professional anecdotes with theoretical discussions on the subject, which lightens the material. Some chapters like the one on how to raise children are even quite funny.

In general Peterson writes that life consists of suffering. Suffering cannot be doubted. And everyone experiences bad things, either himself or in relatives and/or friends. The question is then how to make the suffering worth it. How can you adjust your life so that the (eventual) suffering is worth it? And how can you adjust yourself so that a tragedy does not turn into hell.
When a family member gets sick it depends on the reaction of others whether it is a tragedy or turns into hell like when people argue about the will instead of moaning for the deceased.

So the idea is not to believe in a delusion of happyness but how to get braver. How to become the rock. The exact path of making life, making the suffering meaningful, is individual. The rules are there to help one to get on the path and stay on it since the right path is narrow.
Peterson's rules are extracted from the teachings of the judeo christian religion discussed in context with findings from science in general and psychology specifically.

Whoever is interested can get a very good insight by listening to one of the many podcasts he has attended. For me it is a life changing book.

Discovered Dr Peterson after he was involved in a high profile interview with a British news journalist. The interview has since went viral.
I find him personally intriguing although I enjoyed his college lectures more than his more recent TV interviews
I have read the 12 rules book although will probably need to re-read to fully digest what's on offer. As a practising Catholic I find a lot of what he offers appealing and I can see how he resonates with the male 20-30 demograpic. Applied to attend a talk in London and he's sold out.

Wow! Literally wow! I’ve just smashed through this in 3 days on holiday. Did I say wow?

I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book (and I am a reader of all types of literacy) that has so often made me just put it down a minute and think ....

This will become one of the books that I try an read annually to remind myself of all the things I need to remember but probabaly don’t

When I am not reading or listening to Victor Davis Hanson, I am reading or listening to Jordan Peterson.
