30 Minute Infra Red Sauna

I have had the sauna for years. Now I want to experiment combining the resistance training with the sauna. Proponents of infra red therapy make all sorts of wondrous claims. Let us see how it works on body fat. I will keep track of the mirror test, and how well my drawers zip and button up.

March 10, 2019

There will be a new shift in my training. I am starting back rehab on Wednesday. The PT is starting me on MedX. Twice a week? My Neurologist wants to see how that works before I try steroid injections, which a pain management specialist suggested. Right now my sciatic nerve is rocking.

So, I know most here are kettlebell, free weight guys. I wish I was, but...I will let you know how the MedX "treatments" work.

I am glad you laughed.

To be frank, I was born with caudal regression syndrome. No researcher is quite sure what causes it, but I am 1 in a 100,000. Believe it, or not, I remember a doctor telling me he had submitted medical papers, regarding me, to medical reviews.

Enough of that. I have one kidney, a rebuilt colon, no tail bone, and a back that (although you cannot see it) is so deformed, that twice the last 20 years, radiologists have mistaken my condition to bone cancer.

It is good to be me.

Fantastic that you find your ways to training. Our bodies are such mysterious creations.

What is MedX? I am ignorant.
In any case, I hope the PT approach will work for you. Is it primarily to alleviate pain?

Speaking of Indian clubs. I've got clubs plus a book some time ago but I didn't use them yet. They are hiding in a cupboard not doing me any good right now.
I can easily envision hitting my own head.

Well Laree, I had not heard of it either until I was 45 and a doctor said, "You have this, did no one ever tell you?"

MedX was a series of exercise machines Arthur Jones developed after he sold Nautilus. I have changed physical therapists. The one, who's website stated they had a full line of MedX, only had one machine. Plus, it was a 60 mile round trip to their facility. So, I am seeing the therapist around the corner. He worked on me last night, and for several hours I felt fantastic.

Also, he actually has a full line of Nautilus. He is starting me on that tomorrow. I am losing strength in my legs. I need to get that back.

And again, as much as I would like to be squatting and benching with free weights, and swinging kettlebells, this is my future. I am going to embrace it.

Cooperation is a wonderful thing.

Last evening my PT started me slowly on the machines. I did the Nautilus Low Back and Ab machines. Then I bounced on the Swiss Ball for 5 minutes. I also was worked over by the message therapist.

At the Physical Therapist:

Nautilus Low Back Machine: 10 reps, very slow cadence, light weight.

Nautilus Abdominal Machine: 10 reps, slow cadence, light weight.

Bounced on the Swiss Ball for five minutes.

This current stage in life, regardless of whether I was using free weights or machines (usually Nautilus or Soloflex), makes me appreciate how strong and fit I used to be. No more peak bagging in Wyoming.

August 27, 2020

Finally, I am back at it.

August 24, 2020

Sit Ups 1x10 (I have work to be done there)
Bench Press 3x8
Lat Pull Down/Biceps Curl 3x12
Behind Neck Press 3x8 (That needs work as well)
Triceps Push Down 3x12
Leg Press 3x12

August 26, 2020

Roman Chair Sit-up 1x15
Incline Press 3x8
Behind Neck Pull Down 3x12
Seated Front Press 3x8
Triceps Extension 3x12
Squats 3x8 (My legs are quite out of shape.)

I am having a bit of soreness, in my triceps and calves, but I am not getting the awful full body pain I wrote about a couple of years back. I am on Lyrica and a slow release morhine (Much better than the hydrocodone which my body seemed to process faster than other people. After about 90 minutes it would peek and then wear off.) The slow release pill works about right. I still have spinal stynosis, it is not going anwhere, and the doc iterated that when I begin to have issues walking, that is when he would operate. I am glad he is taking that route. My first neurosurgean wanted to put rods in whenever I was ready. But being 56 he thinks (my new neurologist) with 10 years I would need to replace them.

So, my physical activities are: swimming, Soloflex or Nautilus. My physical therapist has Nautilus but I am not ready to be in his physical therapy studio, I will let the virus run its course a bit more. The pool, which is at the local university is closed. So, right now, Soloflex.

Have a great day!

09.14.2020

Well, it is not often after a workout, that I can say - "Feelin' good in the neighborhood." But, I worked out hard last evening, and I feel good this morning. I do not know what has changed from 2-3 years ago, but I am recovering better, and do not have the muscle ache "flu" feeling that I have had. I certainly need to be in better conditioning.

So:

Sit Ups
Bench 3 sets
Lat Pull Down/Biceps Curl+Crunch 3 sets
Behind neck press 2 sets
Triceps Push down 3 sets
Leg Press 3 sets

Aside from the workouts I am starting to sleep better. I attribute that to switching from the stress filled special ed job I was doing, and moved to the History, Government and Economics classes I am teaching. You would be surprised how many students in high school ask, "Joseph who?" when we start going through Stalinist Russia.

Although I am only working out 1-2 times a week at the moment, I am getting stronger every workout. I was not sure that was ever going to happen again.

Well, hopefully I will be typing here later in the week.

My circuitous route to work takes me through some rather rural areas. I left for work early to practice piano. During my usual route I saw one shop light of with the shop door open. (Idahoans love their shops.) I slowed down a bit to see what was up. Some fellow was getting his workout in. Good for him!

I like the early AM workouts, but I cannot turn the blue tooth on, it would wake my daughter up. Ear buds might be an option.

What the heck, that My Corona virus was something. I did get to workout last evening. First time in 18 days. My upper body felt weeak, my back was tender from the laying around. But, my legs felt good.

My previous workout, I did, the day before I actually started showing symptoms. Flu aches and pains on top of exercise DOMs. Fortunately my school district, if we bring in our notice of testing positive, is not applying our sick days. Yeah.

With the uneasy feeling in my back I did a plank.

Plank 30 seconds (I was just taking it easy.)
Bench Press 3x8
Lat Pull Down/Biceps Curl/Crunch 1x10, 2x8
Behind Neck Press 3x8 (That is by far my weakest exercise.)
Triceps Push Down 3x10
Leg Press 2x12, 1x15

Whoa...something must be wrong. I performed three strength training sessions in.

Plank- 60 seconds

Pull ups 2x2 ten second negatives

Parallel bar dips 1x8, 1x4

Haney shrug 3x12

Barbell curls 3x8

Dead lift 3x8

The bodyweight exercises are kicking my duff. During my decade of laziness the payment has come due in the guise of pull ups and dips.

I have made it back. I was really struggling last fall. I was getting workouts in sporadically, and was having "break through" pain with just about anything I was trying. Generally Soloflex workouts, but bodyweight exercise were a fail, etc. Then Christmas morning I walked into the tv room and almost fell over a Total Gym XLS.

I know it is generally not something discussed here, and even I kind of eyed it with suspicion. But my wife told me she was seeing me struggle and it was time for a change.

So I figured what the neck. I have used it 2-3 days a week since Christmas. I do a lot of dips, shoulder presses, angled pull ups (the dips and shoulder presses are angled as well, lightening the load) and deep knee bends. It has free weight capacity, and I am getting there.

That is what I have been up to. Usually I start with the deep knee bends. Then shoulder press, pull ups, and dips. I do some cable work: pull overs, curls (there are a few different ways to them), etc. I have any where from a half to an hour to finish a session.

For the time being this is what I will use. It is not "traditional", yet it gets the job done. Until tomorrow.

Total Gyms and similar machines are the real deal. Although they won't generally allow you to build or maintain the type of muscular hypertrophy that many seek...they are great for conditioning and/or rehab work.
There is absolutely no shame in using a Total Gym.

Thank you Pink. I have been at it. My leg strength is improving. I can get out of my car, or off the couch, without needing my dog to drag me out. (He is a big GSD. I take his collar and he would pull.)

I have had a three day a week wourkout schedule and have only missed three weeks in which I did two. The Corona vaccine and booster clobbered me. My doctor told me that is how I know they are working.

Yesterday I started with deep knee bends on the Total Gym. I started at level three in December, I am now on level 5. I did one hundred, and followed that with squat jumps. I next did four sets of shoulder press, pull ups, pullovers, and lat pull down/biceps curls. I rotate dips and shoulder press everyother workout.

So, although the glide board is tilted so I am not using a full body weight, I am at least rebuilding strength at a level I can use and not struggle with. My upper half has slimmed down a bit. I am not so sure about my mid-section. I am down a notch on my belt.

Thank you for stopping in, and have a good workout.

Wednesday was workout day. I had to sacrifice nap time, but who needs a nap? Actually, since my wrestle with Corona by the time I get home from work, nap time. Pre-My Corona, I never napped.

Bare with me on this:

I did 1 set 100 deep knee bends at level five (22* angle). The three sets of 20 of jump squats.
Dips, sup-set with pull ups (18 degree angle) for 1x20, 5x15 set.

Pullovers (14* angle) 4x10
Curls (14* angle) for 5 or 6 sets of 10.

It turned out to be a robust 40-45 minutes.

I do two types of curls, the first is just sitting on the glide board and doing curls. The second type is lying down with my melon at the bottom andcurling that way. I imagine you can imagine that.

I am obviously not doing 100% of my bosy weight, especially on the dips and pull ups, but I can get the movements in. The goal of course is to become profient in both those exercises. Dips I do not think I will have an issue with in the end, pull ups will be an adventure.

Exeryone take care!

Monday March 1, 2021

Saturday turned out to be a good day. Instead of counting deep knee bends, I just set a timer for ten minutes. I doubt I did as many as that might indicate, but it was better than trying to count.

I was able to do 4 sets of shoulder presses, and then 6 sets of adapted pull ups.

After that I did a set of pullovers followed by lat pulldown/biceps curls/triceps pushdown with the cables for 5 sets, and then 3 more sets of pullovers. That made me realize, I can do not only dips/pull ups for super sets, but also the pull overs/lat pulldown/biceps curl/triceps pushdown as super sets. I am not sure what to call the hands facing in pullups with curls, then at my sternum reverse my hands and then do the pushdown. So bare with me until I can come up with something amazing.

My wife bought the free wieght bar for me to add extra pounds, that should be bueno. I have a lot of weight floating around between the house and shop.

Which also brings me to another thought, I had a Sololfex dumbbell set and weight organizer and a Soloflex compound bar. I have the weights, but cannot find the organizer or bar. I think the fellow down the street, who has been in and out of rehab for 20+ years might have absconded with them for a fix or two. I need to extend our invisible fence so my German Shepherds can cover the entrance.

Well, until either this evening, or tomorrow morning, take care,

Jon

Tuesday March 2, 2021

Post dated of course.

My workout was the only bright spot yesterday. Not really. I just woke in the very early AM with reflux. At 2:30 I posted for a sub, drove to school and started correcting history papers.

I finished about 7:15 and went home. I was not quite ready to try to sleep, so I changed into my workout lounge pants and t shirt and put in about 40 minutes.

Squats, and shoulder presses, and pull ups, and pull overs, and then I lay on the board with my head toward the bottom and do curls. Speaking of curls, I finished laying with my head at the top of the board and did decline body curls. That is right, decline sit ups, I am using gravity to my advantage.

Right now I am at three days a week, obviously. My whole outlook has changed. The whole HIT, time under load, to failure, etc. is stale.

Now I wander in, in the early AM, or later in the PM, and just workout. Sometimes I do exercises and forget how many sets I have done. Usually I do 15 reps a set, occasionally twenty.I can still swing bags of sidewalk salt and stove pellets on my shoulders so I am not worried about strength, except my legs.

I am trying to have fun. Like I did when I was fourteen or fifteen and had the Sears bench with the 140 lbs Orbitron weight set. Sacramento summers, set after set of bench and curls, and I did not know what hydration meant. Out in the barn, sweat everywhere.

See you tomorrow.

March 4, 2021

4:30 AM

I tried doing leg curls on the glide board this morning. They are OK.

Then squats 5x20. After Tuesday I needed a "rest" workout. So I broke this up instead of one or two long sets.

Gravity friendly body curls 1x20 (This is what happens when you neglect your abdominals.)

I did seated rows, then the glide board "bench" press. I am a bit cool towards that. 4 sets of 10 I think on both. The rows were fine. The "bench" movement is off for me because a) I am not pushing the weight "up" without a bench to puch back against, b) I am not used to having handles and the cables rubbed on my forearms. The one time I tried a Bowflex I noticed the same thing. A learning curve. I think dips can cover this just fine.

I did triceps work after that.

There we are for today. See you Saturday.

March 6, 2021,

Saturday was a good day. I went to my piano lesson and did not suck as much as I thought I would. Then I had to go to my class and start grading online students. But, I became distracted by the Galaga game outside my door and ended up playing Galaga for an hour. That actually hyped me up and I went home and used the glide board for 40 mins, or there about.

I do have a weight bar to add extra pounds when doing exercises. I have not started it yet, but I am getting cloase.

The glide board I have has 6 levels. Level six is about 26*, then it decrease by 4 degree as you lower to the levels under that. I started with a set of 100 deep knee bends on level five (when I start adding weight I will get to more tradional sets and reps.), not a lot of weight because of the angle. Then at the same level I did 3x10 of one legged squats. I understand it is not a huge load I am moving, but in December my legs had become so week level 3 was where I started.

I used a new level for the next two exercises, I moved to level 4 from level three on my pull-ups/Dips super-set. I worked hard, I did 5 sets of 15, minimal rest between the super-set, but no rest between exercises. On set five on the pull ups, I made some guttural noises. I probably would have been escorted from Planet Fitness.

I left it at level four and did 4x10 pull overs. Next, level three and 3x10 of seated curls.

Lastly, I then increased the level to five, stood on the foot platform, looking toward the wall, and did "decline" body curls in a standing position. Yes, I know, gravity is my friend on that one. My mid-section is a bit less than impressive and I have a lot of strength work to do there. Even though my head is directed down, not up, right now I still get a pretty good burn from one set, this one to failure.

I have probably typed this before, what amazes me is how much strength I have lost over the last decade. I am sure my month long Corona illness did not help, but I am back to basics, just trying to get back as much as I had. Currently, I have at least discovered an exercise medium that is working with me.

I will keep the updates coming. I have not been this wound up about exercising and strength training in a decade

March 9, 2021

I got a late start yesterday on my workout. I wanted a 5:00 AM session, it turned into 5:00 PM.

1x100 Deep Knee Bends, 1x130 Deep Knee Bends, level 5

4x15 Shoulder Press Level four. That is the next highest level. I had been doing these at Level 3 since Dec 25. The fourth set was a "get kicked out of Planet Fitness" set due to the grunting I was doing.

So then I thought, "Let us just do a shoulder day!"

Humbling. I strated the cable overhead press at Level 2. I did 8, and then realized I needed to drop to Level 1. I did 4x8.

Lateral Raises 4x8 Level 1. Those have never been an impressive move on my part.

UP Right Row 3x10 Level 3.

My realization on these was, I spent to much time doing bench and curls in the 80s. Time to make up for that.

Then I laid upside down on the glide board Level 4 and did 4x10 curls. I got a call from Planet Fitness way down at Idaho Falls, they told me to quit grunting on the last set. Well, they would have anyway had I been in their shop. But, I would have earned pizza I have heard?

Lastly, Level 5, I did Body Curls using my head with gravity to help. I did 1x30 to failure. When I reach 50 I will lower to level 4 and get rid of some of the gravity. Cheating I suppoe, but it gets me a burn in the abdominals as I have written before. I am doing what I can right now.

The Overhead Cable Presses were causing some "breakthrough" pain in my lower back. I will have to think that through.

The angles strat at Level 6 about 26*.
Then going down: 22*-18*-14*-10*-6*.

There is a trigonometry formula using Cos, but I majored in History. The math guys on the Facebook group figure out how much body weight is used with the formula. Being about 210, I am pushing and pulling more weight than many. Not a ton though.

So, I continue trying to do my rehab on this 57 year old body that got blasted by Corona in November, and was ignored for the last 5-10 years.

On to Thursday.

Thank for the continued support. I like seeing that.

I started the end of work with a two hour nap. I am sure I have written that my September/October Corona illness has made me pooped, still. A nap a day and all that.

Anyway, tonight 3.16.21.

3x100 deep knee bends level 5
6x15 shoulder press level 3
5x15 seated rows level 3
4x10 pull over level 4
4x12 lat pull down/biceps curl level 4
1x25 decline body curl level 5

March 19, 2021

Level 5 Deep Knee Bends 5x50 (More like a Hindu squat.)

Level 4 Pull Ups 2x15, 4x10

Level 4 Dips 5x20

Level 4 Laying Back Curls 4x10

Decline Body Curls 1x30

I took an unexpected two day rest. I took a nap yesterday post work and slept about 11 hours. So picked it today after work. Felt strong, or as strong as I can feel. The dips surprised me.

I might do a light workout tomorrow.

Everyone enjoy your weekend.

March 22, 2021

4:30 AM...I woke at about 3:30 and did not get back to sleep. So, I drug my carcass downstairs at about 4:15-4:30.

I did squats. I am starting to add weight dsics instead of just bodyweight on the board. Not alot yet, keeping it safe.

Then I did shoulder press, pull ups; laying with my knees toward the tower, laying back curls. Then some abdominal work. It took about 40 minutes. I keep up a pretty good pace.

I am at work and do not have my note book. So, sets and reps are a mystery at the moment.

Good Day!

March 25, 2021

An "easy day" probably to some.

Level 5 Squats: 3x20
Level 6 Squats: 1x30
Level 4 Pull Overs: 4x15
Level 4 Hands in Pull-Ups: 4x10
Level 4 Seated Rows: 4x10

My legs felt a bit "dead" this morning. Maybe because I started at about 3:50. I have noticed early morning is a bit more lackadaisical than afternoons. I think the moving around during the day loosens things up a bit more.

I remember DD said once never to train before 12 o'clock (midday)
It stuck in my memory probably because am not a morning person by nature. However, to warm up properly and start slowly enough helps. Usually it feels much better afterwards.
It also has advantages to train early in the day.

OK, This last weekend I started not feeling well. Then Sunday and Monday I started getting little bumps on my shins and the top of my feet. Monday and Tuesday I had incredible itching and burning on the same spots. Tuesday evening I could not sleep. Yesterday I had to sit in class and keep my fan blowing on me because my back started getting the same unpleasant itching. The fan cooled it and got me through the day. When I got home my wife gave me a Lyrica that I had left laying around. That really helped, and last evening I took another one. This morning I am much better and am refilling the prescription after school. I have had shingles before and it felt like the same symptoms. I might go to my MD to see if A) I have shingles, and B) should I get the vaccine.

I browsed through previous posts (which I never do) that started in August 2014. I have to admit, I have kept my workouts rather sparse between thebn and now. I did notice that at 50 I seemed to repsond better to my exercises than I have the last year or two. What I did not like was my apparent ability to do dips then, but now, if I do 100% bodyweight, I usually 100% struggle. That is not good. But, I think with the glide board, and being able to modify mye percentage of my body weight, I can get that strength back to where it was. Along with over-all body strength. Except this week I have been on that glide baord 2-3 times a week since Christmas. I can still get two sessions in this week. If anything, at least I have been consistant for the last three months.

*The logs provide perspective.
*Perhaps good to check with the doctor what it was. I hope you get well soon.
*And for persistence.
*Resistance exercise is a must, I think.
*Keep up the good work.

March 10/13/15, 2021

Climbed back on the glide board at the end of last week and restarted my glide board adventure. It is not a magic carpet. I have cut way back for the moment. Three sets of ten, lower angles for now. In December I think I was so excited for something new that I wore myself out in three months. Yesterday on squats I did 2 sets of thirty and a set of twenty. The other three exercises I did three sets of ten. It is still progressive strength training so I will work more reps, sets, and steeper angles, but slower this round.

What have I learned in 44 years of amateur garage lifting? HIT makes me strong, and fat. And to be honest, I am not going to be a guy who lifts Heavy duty or SuperSlow once a week and live on 1200 calories a day, or get gout from KETO. Lower weights/resistance, more sets and reps makes me look good. Less good now, but better anyway. And better fits my dietary habits.

The upside? Pants that I could not get the zipper up trying to wear them, now fit, snuggly, but they fit. The more leg strength is a plus, that is what the neurosurgeon has been pushing for two years. Now I can do that without compressing my lower spine. He told me two years ago I could ski, but as weak as my legs were that might have been a DOMs disaster from the start. But this coming Fall I think I will drop for a ski pass. There is a small ski hill about 30 minutes down the road, that will work. It used to work great, skiing in the winter, some hiking in the summer, a peak bag here and there (mostly there). I think the hiking might be on the shelf, after a while of walking my right leg starts to drag. I asked the doc who did that neurological test with the pins charged with electric pulses if I had Lou Gehrig's Disease. He looked at me like I had dropped a kettlebell on my melon. No more internet searches on diseases.

I watched a 60 Minutes segment on the "oldest of the old". Some doctor has grants to study the 90+ among us. (Los Angeles, a community that was once called "Leisure World".) What does the study show? They do not really know scheit from shinola when it comes to aging. But, to be very fair it is a new field.

They pushed aclohol, and I have seen alcohol keep more people from 90 than I think they would care to admit. But, the older folks seemed to drink moderately of course. A glass of wine with dinner, but this study determined it was not red wine per se, just a drink or two a day. I do not drink, but a Bloody Mary or rum and Coke might make the day better. I might bring that up at the next staff meeting. Mickey Mantle was not their poster boy for alcohol consumption however.

Dementia/Alzheimer's? This study indicated? They do not know scheit from shinola. Just about every autopsy on brains showed plack build up in the brain. Other avenues are being looked at.

Listening to two 90 year olds talk about their sex life was TMI. I mean the willies TMI.

One upside? Those who age and are slightly overweight? Live longer than the slender aging population. I might live to be 150 then.

Heredity, they claim was not a factor, but I am not sure. My parents are in their late 70's (80 this year) and they both come from lines of parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents who pushed into the 80's and 90's.

Enough of my aging rant. Tomorrow is a workout day, today is my 34th anniversary. Mongolian Beef on rice noodles, and then an A's game on MLB tv. Romance lives.

Pink-pixie, always enjoy your comments. Keep them up!
