This post is a little overdue, but...

I turned 25 in May. I've been lifting for 7 years but only about 4-5 of them could really be considered serious.

I've done various kinds of training ranging from Bulgarian-style "lift-every-day-to-max" to pretty minimalist/low volume stuff.

I was born with a "unique" left hand (I'm actually not sure of the politically correct term for this, but keep reading and you'll understand.)

I was born without much of a thumb on my left hand and an index finger that should have been a thumb. To maximize the functionality of that hand, surgeons removed the left thumb rearranged the structure of my hand, making my left index finger a thumb (basically.)

Well, fast forward two decades and some and that arm is still internally rotated from being in a cast and sling for so long, the elbow has less ROM than the right and I can only use a full grip when pulling things. It's also slightly shorter. I knew this was a problem early on and pretty much accepted that DBs would have to be my go-to tool for my upper body. I have used the barbell off and on, but it usually ends up causing problems sooner or later.

I love lifting and I think it's a lot of fun.
My favorite lifts are 2 DB OHP and the front squat. If there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to message me!

Just want to say that this is a great forum. I've visited numerous times throughout the years but only recently decided to start a training log.

Greetings,

My name is Eric...39 years old...living in Oregon for the past few years but originally from California. I've been a lurker on this forum for quite a while and have always enjoyed reading all of the interesting threads.

About me...grew up as a skinny youngster...but then turned into "that fat kid" who weighed just over 300 lbs when I graduated high school (standing 5' 7"). Got serious about trimming down and by age 20 was down to the 175-190 range and stayed there for about 7 years. I fell off the wagon after some family tragedies and spent the next decade between 230-250 lbs...got down to 220 once but it didn't last and then things got really bad when I hit my mid 30s.

In 2011 at age 36 I was up to around 260 and in chronic pain and suffering from carpal tunnel and about ready to end up without a roof over my head when I decided that I had to finally put my foot down and make some drastic changes. Somewhere around this time I decided to start lifting weights again and that's when I found some articles online about Vince Gironda. This lead to reading more about about his dietary and training programs and studying the history of bodybuilding...especially from the "golden age" as I hear most folks refer to it.

A year later I was down to 180 and starting to finally see a little muscle tone. I eventually got my act together in all areas of my life and things are much better now...but through all of this has been my workouts which helped me focus on making permanent, positive changes. My guess was that if I started first on my body..then this would give me the focus to work on the other things that needed fixing and somehow it all worked out. ;)

I've still got a long way to go...I hover around 170-175 these days would like to drop another 10-15 lbs of bodyfat and pack on some more muscle...but all those years of unhealthy living and being so heavy have left a lot of scars (and creaky joints) so I just keep on plugging ahead and when I feel a minor injury hit I just rest up a few days and then start back up when I'm feeling better.

I'm not one for heavy lifting...been focusing on Vince's "A muscle has four sides" routines and seeing some amazing development in my shoulders and arms...most of it done with light free weights which I would have never thought possible.

Anyway sorry to rattle on so much...I could talk about diet, exercise and weight loss for days on end...looking forward to getting to know some folks here...and thanks again for all the interesting posts. ;)

My name is William,

By body building standards I ain't got nothin and by power lifting/strong man well they could probably curl me.

Trained about 5 years in my mid twenties and went from a skinny fat 172 to 212 at 20% fat. Something happened in my life that stopped me.

Now at 57 I am making my comeback (not that I ever arrived) I like this web site mostly because of the older crowd and I have the greatest admiration for Dave Draper who even though he has been afflicted with the barbells and his body is swolled up twice the size of a normal man he still helps a great many people.

Hello!
10-01-14 09:47 PM - Post#812200

My name is Dan, I'm 36, reside in Portland, OR. Stingo is the co-worker, friend, and supporter of my training who referred me. My handle is a tribute of sorts - now I must prove worthy of the name.

I did some casual weight lifting in junior high (Dad bought a weight bench for Xmas) and high school (wrestling), but my first real go was the Body for Life program with a friend from massage school back in 1999. The accountability and motivation we gave each other over those 12-ish weeks facilitated significant progress in my strength and appearance, and I reap the benefits to this day.

I'm currently completing my undergrad degree and occupational therapy prereqs. I registered for a weight training class this term, but ended up walking out halfway through and dropping the class. The way we were mindlessly rushing through a list of predetermined exercises, I felt it was going to interfere with my personal goals more than anything. After I told Stingo about this and my decision to go it alone, he suggested this site as a valuable resource. I'm quite impressed with what you have going here, and grateful to have been introduced.

My goals? First and foremost, it's a personal movement study. I practice a system of bodywork and movement education called Structural Integration, which helps clients develop greater support, adaptability, and ease of movement over a series of sessions. I am always trying to cultivate these qualities in myself, both to share with my clients and because it helps me perform my work better. I usually do this through yoga, dance, and basketball. I'm also taking kinesiology and anatomy/physiology this term, so it's a perfect opportunity for mutual reinforcement.

I'm an avid backpacker, seriously taking it up this past summer. I'm enjoying the increased strength and energy from that, want to keep it going through the winter, and even enter next summer stronger than last.

Of course there's appearance, general health, and longevity. I have a slender frame, and would like to realize more of my physical potential. Not looking to get "swoll" exactly, but for now just working for a more muscular build and increased strength.

Another thing - the discipline it takes to stick with a program, to wake up early each morning, the commitment... that is s HUGE part for me.

That's probably more than enough for now. Thanks, everyone, for making this site such a tremendous resource, and thanks to Stingo for the guidance and support!

Welcome Dango!

And in a way, you are motivating ME in being more proactive at my training and accountability.

I believe Laree might be curious about your structural integration.

Hi, all. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and finally signed up. I'll try to keep this short and sweet.

My name is Dan and I'm 35 years old. I have been lifting off and on for 10-15 years without much consistency, and it definitely shows. I'm 5'9" and right around 210lbs with, lets just say, pretty high body fat.

I suffer from a congenital heart defect that will require a valve replacement sometime in the future. I have also had back issues for years due to a trampoline injury when I was a teenager, but I'll get more into that in a later post.

I'm mainly looking to get into general shape and look good naked, but mass wouldn't be bad either. This seems like a good message board without a lot of the "background noise" you get at some of the others. I look forward to getting a lot of good info here.

Dan

Hi all! My name is Markus, I am from Bavaria, Germany and I started lifting this summer at the tender age of 25. :) Still trying to figure out what the basics of proper lifting and eating look like, but I guess reading Dan John and Dave Draper's work is as good a start as someone can get ;)

New kid on the block saying hello
04-13-15 06:52 PM - Post#821881

Hello all, so here we are again pushing and pulling.

Just turned 66 in March and back to the gym as age prudently suggests. Started body building way back in 1965 or so, can't recall the year, it's too far away. The memories of those days are good, was the first in junior high to lift weights and inspired some class mates to do the same. As I was telling a new -good- friend, the teen hormone took over and left the gym and my weights collected first dust and then rust and then disappeared mysteriously.

Back to the gym when around 30+, but again destiny (aka wife, kids & job) took me away through a different path. At that time I trained everyday hard, heavy, intense and focused. Didn't make friends in the gym, was busy pulling and pushing the irons and above all, enjoying. Rally grew a lot then, a bit over 18" arms, pumped, could do military press with 100 kilo for reps and bench press with a couple of kilos more. Those where the days my friend, the song says.

Now back to the gym with new energy and spirit. Feeling excited and who knows I might upload a pic or two if results are what I expect as muscles have memory, so some say. Just hope mine are not into Alzheimer and then everything will be ok.

It's not easy, aches last longer, not the 4 - 5 usual days of youth, joints exist(!), metabolism is not the same, but sweat is the same. I little trouble with my left shoulder and a hint of lower back pain, that should be away soon with planned therapy and B vitamin injections (Tribedoce) and my abs... well under. Will be a tough job to bring them back, to trim from 34 to 28, but the decision has been taken and this the challenge.

Training most muscles every day, no isolation, no supersets, just general stuff with feather weights, getting to know the body again, the place, the schedules and trying to be invisible although this is not easy being the oldest guy in the gym. Feels good yeah!

Take care, God speed...

Hello, I've been lurking here for a while and decided I'd like to join in the discussions.
I am in my early thirties and I live on the west coast. I've been weight training for a little over a year. Previously, I had a weight training class in tenth grade, and I worked out with dumbbells for a few months about ten years ago.

I found myself in poor physical condition due to lack of exercise and not paying enough attention to good nutrition. So I decided it was time to get back into better shape. Being self-conscious about going to a gym, I dusted off my old pair of adjustable dumbbells and started doing basic weight training regularly at home, along with long power-walking sessions in very hilly neighborhoods, and a reduced daily caloric intake. I kept at it, and in six months I had dropped fifty pounds and seven inches off of my waistline.

My inspiration and approach to fitness may be considered a little unusual. It really came out of my interest in mid-twentieth-century culture. That just happened to include the occasional "sword and sandal" cult classics, and the original Muscle Beach scene at Santa Monica. I wanted to look more like those guys!

I have improved my nutrition and added to my weight training routine with barbells and more, by researching the methods used in the 50s and 60s by figures such as Jack LaLanne, Steve Reeves, Vince Gironda, Larry Scott, and, yes, Dave Draper. :)

I am in better shape than I used to be in, but there's definitely room for improvement. My waistline is slim, but I still have some stubborn "skinny fat" on the belly and thighs that I am trying to get rid of. Also, I am trying to add muscle mass in the chest and back. It's a very slow process for me.

Hi I am Colin from Northern Ireland. 40 yrs old I have been training since I was 13 to build up my 6 stone body! The laugh is I really had to convince my parents to buy me a weights set for my Christmas present; that I wouldn't give it up after 2weeks!From there on I did bodybuilding. About 15 yrs ago i switched to powerlifting, then finally to Olympic Lifting.I have enjoyed some success in this sport.Currently interested in all rounder. Love Dan John stuff and my physique era of dreams is the 50s.I train alone in garden shed, no faciliies nearby.Outside of Lifting I am a Christian, Birdwatcher, Bookworm, and occasionally dabble in guitar playing, opera singing and biblical Hebrew. All the best!

Hey everybody,

I am Slaven, from Croatia, Europe. I am keeping training log here on Dan John's section, and I realised I haven't introduced myself, so here I am.
I am 38 years old, into lifting last 2 years. I've had some light back injuries and generally poor posture so it was holding me back. Luckily, injuries are gone and I have been working a lot (and still do) on my posture and even that is much better now.
I got here mostly because of Dan John's subforum, but I will stay as you all seem really nice people.
:)
My main goals are hypertrophy, hypertrophy, hypertrophy(while staying injury free). Being tall and thin type + pretty lousy genetics and considering my age, whatever I gain will still look small so the most I can maximize this I can't overdo it in any way I guess :))
However, I think I have passed newbie gains, so I plan to work on this goal for up to next summer and then I plan to maintain it with weights or/and kettlebells while also
try some martial arts sport, mostly because I believe it has great transfer into mental part and we all need it.
And of course, to be most active I can as I love outdoor activities.
That's it. Sorry for my english not perfect.

Hello Everybody,
I have been on here since March of 2015, and just now noticed this introduction thread. My name is Michael. I am 31 years old. I am originally from California, have been in Maui for 5 years and just recently moved back to LA for some family stuff. All in all, my training over the past few years has consisted of mostly an ADHD training program, but for the last 3 1/2 weeks I have been on Dan Johnʻs 40 day program and its going great. Lots of people on this forum inspire me and Iʻm glad to be a part of this group.
Also, just did my first Highalnd Games last weekend in Ventura and itʻs safe to say Iʻm hooked on throwing and tossing heavy stuff.

Hi Slaven,

38!!! You're just a kid! I am 68 and have been training since I was 10. I made my best gains after the age of 40, so you have great years ahead of you. Welcome to the best forum on the irongame.

And your English is fine. Wish I could speak another language as well as you do with English.

Hey all...! Just wanted to say a quick hello and thanks for letting me onto your forum.
I have been a lurker here for a bit, and was on another site that has slowed almost completely in responses. I like to give opinions and ask questions with like minded lifters.

I am 58, have been lifting for almost 30 years and still get as excited about it as ever.
Pet lift is pulling deads, (which I still seem to be able to do to some extent). So I chase that lift with great enthusiasm.
There seems to be a good array of knowledgeable lifters here, young and old and I hope I can surely learn and perhaps give some insight into our great activity.

Cheers

Aside: Pretty much all forums went into decline after Facebook took off. Our chatting time is limited, and FB kinda ate it up. Our post volume is about 10% of what it was 5-7 years ago. But there's still fun conversation and a wealth of material in the archives, so we carry on.

Ha, I recently joined a Reg Park forum based in Europe, but it seems like people only post there about twice a year!

Hello.
I'm a NC transplant from Pennsylvania. Started lifting at 14 in mostly a bodybuilding approach. I found the O lifts when I walked on to Edinboro Universities football team and made it. I recently began training again in the olympic lifts. At,soon to be, 43, it seems a bit more challenging than at 24, but I hope to win the NC state weightlifting championships, in the "old" man division, then start "spreading the word" of Olympic lifting.

Hello, name's Herb. I'm 60 years old and have lifted on and off for several years but for one reason or another, I never stayed with it for long.
A couple of years ago I survived an ER visit with a blood pressure of 302/286. As my wife drove me to the hospital I thought I was taking my last trip. Fortunately it was not.
I decided to make lifting stick for good.
What started out as a proactive health measure turned into a passion and a way of life.

Hi all,

My name's Pete. I've just completed an RKC cert with Dan John in London, where I heard about this forum.

I'm 43 years old and have been lifting for about 6 years. I started out using kettlebells but I've pretty much fallen in love with the barbell over the last couple of years.

I'm a huge fan of Dan John and the iron game in general. Picking up heavy things and putting them back down again puts a huge smile on my face!

Great to be here.

Hi Everyone, I'm Jon. I'm 39, originally from the UK but now living in the USA. I started training as a teenager and have have always trained on off throughout the years. In my early twenties I got pretty serious with my training and managed to build up to some adequate numbers on bench, deadlift, squat and press. I've never considered myself a power lifter, bodybuilder or anything other than somebody who just loves to train and has always loved strength sports and all thing's strength related. I stopped training for a while in my late twenties, picked it up again stopped again.

After I emigrated I started training with kettlebells which I still enjoy and I've just recently returned to the gym and started training with the Barbell again which was and will always be my first love. I now have aspirations to start competing in Highland Games in the future all being well. I love reading Dan John's and Dave's stuff, and it was reading Dan John that bought me here. I've been a lurker for a while but thought it was high time I finally joined.

OK I'm finding my way around this website. I've lifted weights off and on since 1976. Most recently I had an undiagnosed thyroid condition -- low -- and suffered from extreme fatigue for over 3 years. Now I'm on thyroid medication and feel 1000x better but must go slow to get back in shape. I am 100% type A and tend to overdo training, especially in the weight room. Right now I'm doing squats and foam roller at home with some 8 lb medicine ball work; just started swimming once a week and back to easy hikes. I live in Kodiak, Alaska, and have lots of hiking to do.

Hi all, hope you’re all well.

I live in Derbyshire in the UK. Joined up for advice and support. I’m 43 and just poking my head through the clouds after 3 years out of training.

I’m an ex competitor. County level swimming in my teens, amateur boxer in my 20’s (had to stop when I hit 30 due to having my wisdom teeth out, couldn’t take shots to the jaw without ending up on my backside).

Then at 31 I ended up taking a friend to dancing (ballroom and Latin) classes where I soon met the current Mrs Volumiza who was a competition dancer. We soon started dancing competitively together which I carried on doing through my 30’s.

I’ve always done weights as supplementary training but at 37 I really dialled in on the aesthetics and nutrition side of things and took my weight up over 3 years. Addicted is the word I’m looking for. And for 40 I looked and felt awesome.

Then the dreaded 40 hit and I got promoted at work which completely threw my work / life balance and we had to stop dancing. Then, dealing with very ill father I stopped training altogether for the first time in over 30 years.

I didn’t think it would be permanent, just a few months, but 3 years and over 100lbs later I desperately need to do something.

Stumbled over Dan Johns Never let go book, one thing leads to another and here I am.

Greetings-

I'm Denny, turned 62 on Saturday, lifetime resident of Ohio. I've coached football and track for 40 years, but have decided to enter a new phase in life with a grandson who recently celebrated his first birthday. I've been fortunate to have been active virtually my entire life and find that consistency has been the key. Played around with powerlifting during my 20's and 30's, but mostly focus on trying to include the various facets of healthy habits such as strength, suppleness, and developing a measure of cardiovascular fitness.

It seemed likely to me years ago that sticking to things that render the most bang for the buck was the way to go. Four or five years ago I added kettlebells to the equation and didn't look back. I've lurked on this site for roughly three years and decided to take the plunge.

I've derived 10,000x more from this site than I will ever manage to contribute, but I'll try every now and again.

I know that there are those who are facing dark times in their lives, but I am convinced that for many our best days are ahead of us.

Introductions, please
10-04-18 02:37 AM - Post#871661

Hi all, just returned to the forum. I noticed my avatar pic with my twin baby grandsons and they are now 10 so it’s being awhile.

I’ve been a life long martial artist, Goju Ryu Karate and Military Krav Maga. I wrote columns in UK magazines Fighting Arts International and Traditional Karate.

Originally from Scotland but grew up in Cyprus and Malta. Spent 28 years living and working in Asia and moved home to Cyprus last year after semi retiring. I work for Macquarie Bank and travel two weeks a month from home in Cyprus.

Because of the job I have got used to all kinds of good to appalling hotel gyms. My home gym will be finished next week and I bought the Powertec LS workbench / Selectorised dumbbells plus a few other toys I creep into a limited space when the wife isn’t watching. This will I hope give some consistency to my training.

I’m 57 and at 5’8” weigh in at 92KG. BF is 24% so I have some serious work to do. Goals as I head towards 60 are leaning out, ideally in the low teens for BF and being consistent with my training. Building a physique that will carry me through to a healthy lifestyle as I age.

It’s good to be back on this forum which has always being motivational.m

Hello folks - it's good to be back! I used to be on here a lot but dropped out of lifting for a while when real life got crazy. I started working out again last December and trying to get back where I was, although a bit older and slower. I was reading an article about Dave's book getting rave reviews and suddenly missed my Iron family. I see AmazonBlonde, WickedWillie and many others are still here, so a warm online hug to my old friends and a big Howdy to my new ones.
My current goals are just to lose some extra weight and get strong again. Latest #s are 235 DL, 165 Bench. My best DL was 305 so I still have some catching up to do.

Hermanito!

Slow and steady will win that "catching up" race. Catch me up sometime when you get the chance. Michele and I were just talking about you the other day.
Here's a goal for you to shoot for. I just recently closed a CoC #2...full contact "click." Didn't come easily but I finally did it.

@Wicked - Closed a #2? Congrats!! I'm doing reps with trainer and closing the #1, but it's going to take a while to build the Popeye forearms. Kym is doing well also and working out - she's the one that got my lazy butt back in gear. Always slow and steady. I took the first 3 months very gradually and I'm only now trying to push a bit. It does come back relatively quickly though.

Hi,

I'm 47 years old. I've been running since school but have only dabbled with strength training until fairly recently.

I'm a bit under 5' 11" and weight 203 lb; reckon I need to lose about 30lb (!).

Injured my knee running last April and ended up limping for a few weeks. Saw a physio who said it was most likely cartridge damage and that I needed to get stronger.

Did some bodyweight training then read Simple and Sinister by Label at the end of last year. Now doing it with 16kg for the TGUs (transitioning to 24kg) and 24kg for the swings. I'm really enjoying it and wish I'd tried proper strength training years ago.

Loads of sanity and common sense on this site and I'm grateful for all the advice ideas and motivation.

Thanks to everyone who makes this forum so useful and such a good place to be.

Hey to all youz iron lovers on here.
I have been in the game a while and on a few boards over the years (that no longer are or no one posts much if at all). Oh well, it is nice to see this one still active and has a bit of the old feel to it.

I'm 61
6'
BW #210
Built pretty exclusively for pulling.
Have always had a huge love affair with the conventional deadlift.
Followed lots of Dr Ken's, Brad Steiner's, Kubiks, Starr, McCallum and on and on. Was a big fan of HG magazine and have done my best with majoring in the compound lifts, then throwing in some limbs at end.
Some set backs over the last few years, but I am clawing back...!

Cheers to all

Be yourself. Everyone else is taken
