Hi all. guess I forgot to intro. anyways I live in Michigan and have a Wife, 3 kids , 3 grand kids, a dog named Porkchop.
been injured so many times I am held together with bailing wire and super glue. as is I am 50 and thinking I can get some gains back and help myself stay fit in old age.
my sons keep me motivated. they have me going to the gym 2-3 times a week and some of my strength is returning. after my knee replacement things started to improve(waited 9 years)now I am poised to get past "the french get up test" with a top score. I don't suspect I will ever lose much weight but I can make sure it move to where its needed. I haven't been under 320 in 2 years.
one of my sons is a thrower. That's Mike. he did well enough to place 1st in regional's and has done well for himself. he is just big enough to think he can do it all. he is just in 10th grade and going to be a Junior next year. he falls in at 6'2" and about 230. my other son is a tad smaller at 6'0' and 200.
here is a pic from one the track meets with me standing between them.

as is I have tons of questions and have been searching the forums here for answers. some of them come easy. others not so much...

Another Michigander!! Go Blue and welcome! You will get your questions answered here that's for sure

Those would definitely be old friends from Trigg's. How fun!

Great to hear you're on the upswing, Jason. A heart attack will get your attention... or so I'm told.

Hi, I think there is probably one of these from 1999 or so around here somewhere!

Anyway...I'm Craig and I live in the boonies of West Tennessee. My wife and I work from home so we get to hang out where there are very few people (about 8 households within 5 miles on our road) which we love.

As I mentioned above, I joined IOL the first time somewhere in the 1999-2001 period, I really can't remember. I started lifting 16 years ago at 30, and stumbled into IOL, Super Squats, John McCallum and Dan Martin shortly thereafter. I went from a scrawny 145 to a ..er..'husky' 215 before a back injury took me out of lifting for a good long while. During that time I too up long distance trail running, skateboarding, and other things that may or may not have contributed to a host of painful dysfunctions.

Dan John turned me onto Somatics, and I am finally doing MUCH better. Training at home, exercise bar (just made a sleeve for it so it can be a fat bar), rings, kbs, and just playing the slow and steady game now that I am not in pain. Life is good.
Accept your feelings. Know your purpose. And do what needs to be done.

I've been a member here for many years, I'm glad I am back after some challenging um, challenges (surviving earthquakes and a heart attack) and it's fantastic to still see so many familiar faces. Love this place.

Keep up the great work Laree, this is as finely run as they come. Thanks for having me! JIM.

Hi everyone and especially Dave and Laree,

I have been following Dave from the age of 13 when I started training and got his book. I have been in touch a number of times to ask for training and recovery advice and Dave and Laree have always been most helpful.

By way of introduction, I am 24 years old, weighing in at 96kg at 8-9% body fat. I bench 180kg clean, squat 230kg and deadlift 250kg. I try to keep a good diet and regular training, although with work it is sometimes challenging. I am hoping to compete in amateur powerlifting especially in bench press, for which I hope to improve my bench to 200kg+, adding another 3.9kg of weight over a period of 1 year and leaning up further.

I am joining the forum as I have a few questions to ask and perhaps there is something I can share of my own experience that would help other people training.

All the very best,

Alexey

Howdy,
Brand new to this board and Dave's site. Was lucky enough to stumble upon it when looking for some advice and inspiration for us in the "over 50" subset of weight trainers. I have started up again after a bit of a lay off. My body can't seem to cash the huge checks my brain is writing, but I have been plowing ahead! I think I need to follow Dave's advice and just write more checks in smaller amounts. Happy to be here!

Guess that happens to all age groups, but we do seem to have it worse, don't we? Especially after decades of training...

But don't be misled, Dave's as bad at that as anybody. Well, I think we could say worse than most.

Greetings Everyone,

My name is Dave Hall and I run a small gym in Birmingham, Alabama. I'm a late bloomer, of sorts, having not really gotten into strength and fitness until my mid 30's (I'm 41). Prior to that I was mostly a career stoner who couldn't figure out why he wasn't happy with his life.

The gym provided the perfect vehicle for turning things around and I now make a career out of helping others discover the transformative opportunities getting strong affords.

In addition to my gym I run a small group on Facebook known as Mental Meat Heads and play host to yearly workshops.

Hi

I´m Guiillermo from Argentina, I recently discover the page and the forum by the prologe of a Dan John ebook (CPKB2). I took a look to the site and really like it. I see that there are a lot of people and info about the way I train that is not so comon where I live.

I train at home with basic exercises (I have a standar bar so not olimpic drills) and kettlebells, My objective is improve my strength and stay fit as long as I can. I ´m forty and train in one or another way consistently for 6 years.

I m also certified kettlebell teacher and I m part time personal trainer, more for fun than for profit, now I work in office daily as main activity but who knows may be someday set my own gim. I also help as strength coach in a recreative volley team which is tecnical coached by my wife. I´m very interseted in old school training and have a blog (in spanish) about it.

Regards for the far south.

Hey, I've always been of a bit of a lurker but these last few months of doing nothing prompted me to register.

I'm 25 and from Canada and have already learned quite a bit browsing. I've always been physically activity and before my pain prohibited me I loved to play basketball and baseball as well as weight lifting. I was also thinking about getting into boxing but I can't at the moment.

Hopefully I'll be able to sort out my problems through my stay on this forum. Looking forward to talking to you all.

Hi Dave and Laree,

I was part of the forum some 10 years ago but had to take some time off due to my career. I am very happy to be back and look forward toward being part of your community again. Laree, you may remember me from several Arnold Classic's years ago. I am from the Philly area and am still building muscle and improving my physique at age 51; I feel and look better than I ever have! Take care and I'll talk to you soon, Steve

Hello fellow Brothers in Iron,

I'm Craig and I've been using bodybuilding-style training for the past 25 years. Started right out of college and have continued consistently to this day (all the gory details are described in my Supermen book. I've trained hundreds of individuals for bodybuilding over the past two decades and now write fitness books, after a long career in the software industry.

I've been a big fan and proponent of the philosophies espoused by Dave Draper, Bill Pearl, Bill Starr, Dan John, and John McCallum, to name a few. So this is a natural place for me to land.

With an ode to Jim Bouton (Ball Four), a weightlifter spends a good piece of his life gripping a barbell, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.

Looking forward to sharing thoughts, insights and inspirations from others here.

As for personal stuff, I'm married with 3 kids (all girls!) and 20 animals, so I know a thing or two about time management :-)

(And yes, that's me in the avatar pic--not too shabby for a 47 year old. Amazing what consistency and intensity can accomplish.)

i would like to reintroduce myself after being in absentia for the last few years...my name is domenica. i have been a competitive natural bodybuilder for the last twenty or so years. i was out of the loop for a little bit, having to give my body time to recover from brain surgery. i am back to competition form, doing my eight mile hike up and down a mountain for cardio in an effort to burn my fat every afternoon in the warm Arizona sun...followed by the split training in the late evening at the local golds gym.. i see many familiar names here...hello everyone...thanks for taking me back..

Well, here goes: I’m a 62 y.o. metabolic syndrome patient. There, that about covers it. Metabolic Syndrome is what about 50% of us old Nam vets have in common. High blood pressure – diabetes – LDL/SDL screwed up – Trigs through the roof – and a few other unmentionables. Decided that I wasn’t going to take it any longer.

Theory goes like this: Visceral fat causes hormonal changes that increases insulin resistance (diabetes) and causes testosterone to turn to estrogens. This causes even more belly fat! Cure? Eat less, exercise more. Did that. Belly fat remains, diabetes unabated, but I started toning up. Next step: Increase metabolism to help burn more calories when sleeping. How? Short of getting ‘juiced’ I decided to start ‘recreational’ bodybuilding. I’m now up to 4 days a week on a split program, with a warmup cardio session, and guess what? Fastings are down in the normal (to low) range. Even after cutting out my primary diabetes med!

I just cured diabetes! Bodybuilding! I’m hooked just like I was back in the early 60’s after seeing Steve Reeves for the first time (Hercules). Wish I had perused that youthful endeavor. I’m now on the path to beat this old body back into ‘near’ military standards. Shoulders are shot, knees not much better. But, I’ve added inches to chest, arms, and thighs.

Dave, your ‘one-liner’ autograph, in my copy of “Your Body Revival” reads “Persist!”. That underscores my successes. Don’t give up! Progress is slow, but I haven’t got the time for those that lean against the Smith machine wanting to chat. I’m aiming at no meds at all. Dave, that book is absolutely mandatory reading for an entire generation. Thank you.

Regards.

My name is Tim I live in Utah. I'm 54 years old 5'9" tall around 210 lbs, been training many years off and on but really got back into it about 3 years ago after rehab from a non weight lifting related injury requiring surgery.
I look ok for a guy my age with arms around 18", but could probably diet a little better and be a little leaner. Train 3 times a week with weights and 3 times a week cardio.
Just want to raise a glass to Dave and congratulate him for his recent clean health report!

Hello,

My name is Scott and I hail from the great state of Washington (Vancouver, WA to be exact). I love all the good, honest discussion here where it seems all voices are listened to and respected. Short bio, I am 46 and have been lifting since the age of 13, for sports, then Powerlifting, then my degree and livelihood. I am a middle school science teacher and I coach both football and wrestling. I love all things weight training related and am a big fan of lifters and programs from the 50's through the 70's. I also posted on Dan John Q&A. I am really happy to be here!

Sincerely,

Scott

Hi, all. I'm Wayne, a late-40s latecomer to lifting. I've been training semi-seriously for just over three years and have seen acceptable increases in strength and far more modest improvements in appearance. I'm at something of a crossroads right now, having spent much of the past year battling various (and, thankfully, mostly minor) health issues. In trying to decide on a (re)new(ed) lifting strategy, I'm pondering a number of issues for which I'll be seeking input from the group here. Thanks!

Hello everybody.

My name is Morten and I'm from Denmark.

At the moment I'm serving the last days of my tour to Afghanistan as part of a counter IED squad.

My training age is about 3 years, where i began Starting Strength which took me from a skinny 60 kg guy to the somewhat more reasonable 70 kg i am now.
After that i fooled around for a good 2,5 years feeding my training ADHD.

And here I am.
I'm 25 years old, 178 cm high, weighing about 70 kg with a bodyfat percentage ranging somewhere about 9% - 11%.

Of injuries i have some problems with the left upper side of my back and shoulder due to an injury sustained while building a bridge (damn basic military training!). Carried too much, too uneven, while running too fast.
The shoulder were "torn" on the obstacle course. Fell down from a two meters and my knee jerk reaction was to reach out and grab what was nearest.

The two injuries together keeps me away from dips done any other way than very light and tends to leave me hurting a bit after staying tight for the presses and squats.

Regarding this I've thought of finding an ART practitioner when i get back home. Does anyone have any experience with that kind of treatment?

Glad to be here.
Have a nice day everyone.

Hello Everyone, My name is Gary , I'll be 71 , and I've been here before , I think , no , I've been here before..I've been training ever since I ran home with a kid's barbell set under my arm and wanted to look like Sig Klein . Hope that isn't too early for you guys . Anyway , one day I felt really good and healthy and just finished welding up some new equipment to work out with when I realized I was having a little trouble using the toilet .. Off to the hospital to see a Doc , and to make a long story short , spent almost 2 months there and lost 3/4 of my prostate , wore a catheter for almost 5 weeksand basically felt like Hell... Home now to heal .....Doc told me no lifting , ANYTHING ! for at least 2 months ! Woe is me ... Tell this to a guy who has followed the circuit from home gym , to Vic Tanny's to Sig Kleins in NYC, and then Marine Corps Powerlifting team , to the Dungeon in Santa Monica, to Gold's in Venice, to World gym across the street , then on to a plane to relocate to Thailand .. That's a story in itself.....Worked out in many gyms, then doing what I did at Gold's , bought a welding machine and started cranking out my own stuff... Then unforeseen illness ..Minor setback ! I'll be back at it again because of guys like Dave D. who motivate and tell us what's good , what's evil , and when to mix up a little Bomber Blend .... Thank you Dave, for your weekly articles and sharing your life with us !
Gary Steuer ......

Hi Folks,
My name is Billy, I am 57 yrs old, never been a weight lifter or into excercise at all. I recently had weight loss surgery, I was 354lbs, I am now 197lbs at 6ft tall. I did the surgery cuz nuttin else worked, or, at least I did'nt allow anything else to work. Now that I am at a decent weight I want to start working out. I admit, I am pretty dang weak, got no muscle at all, use to be pretty strong but lost alot of muscle along with the fat. I need to git strong, need to git my energy level up, need muscle mass. I know it's gonna be hard to do, do not get to intake a lot of food, so not a lot of protein or carbs or fat or anything going in. it's under 1000 cals. per day, about 85 grams protein which mostly comes from protein shakes. I don't have a clue where to start. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi, folks, thanks for signing on. Looks like we have some great stories in the works here!

If you have specific questions, it's best to start a new topic so we can get into things a little deeper. For example, Billy, could you repost your note in a separate thread? You're asking how to get started, and that could be a nice meaty conversation, but it probably won't happen here in the introduction thread.

PS: You must feel amazing, even though weaker than you were before. That's remarkable!

Hi, I'm Jason. Horse is an old nickname given to me by a high school football coach. I have trained on and off (with a lot of off) since I was 14 and I'm 40 now. I played football in college too, where I had the pleasure of having the late powerlifting champion, John Ware, an all around great man, as a coach. I just got into the bodybuilding lifestyle after just being a guy that liked to get really strong once in a while. My only problem is that I used to like beer. I still do, but I used to, too.

Hi!
So I have come here because I know this is where all the good folks with great advice frequent. Boy do I need some advice haha, so lets get to it.

I am 29, will turn 30 this summer. I served from 2003-2012, got off active duty and went to the reserves. I have been working out since I was 17.. so for about 13 years. I have been strict as one could be with workouts, even while deployed.

At my peak I was 215 pounds, with a 380 bench, 475 squat, and 500 deadlift. After my final deployment I got out, began going to school and my wife and I had our second child. (My wife is also military and still active duty) So between school, two kids, and a wife who left for a 4 month deployment, then a year later a 2 month stint, (she became a recruiter) In the time frame of 2 years I went from 215 down to 190. Thats where I am at now... and i'm building back up. So I have come here for advice, workout plan reviews and knowledge.

I enjoy hunting, camping, outdoors stuff, military weapons, shooting and bodybuilding. I enjoy older things, I like the original bodybuilders such as zane, arnold, franco, dave, lou etc... I like their style and bodys much more then the current group. I think those guys look great! and I dont prefer the jay cutler/ ronnie coleman look, If I could Id look like dave. I also enjoy older weapons such as the 1911, M1 garand, M14, etc..

Kinda long, so thanks for reading

Hello All,

John from Atlanta here. I'm 47 now and have been training off and on since college. I've been somewhat slack about it compared 20 years ago but still try to at least stay in shape. I've been more consistent lately thanks to my teen boys. They are now 14 and 15 and my oldest has really taken an interest in lifting since he discovered girls.

We train together when we can, usually 2 to 3 times a week. We're doing a 2 day split of chest, back, tris and abs on day 1 and legs, shoulders, bis and calves on the other. Our reps are 15,12,10,6-8,6-8,6-8 on the big compound moves and we stay up in the 8 to 15 rep range for our isolation moves.

I'm trying to get them hooked on the basic lifts like squats, bench, dead lifts, overhead press, etc hoping that simply adding pounds to the basics over time will stick with them. It seems a lot of kids get hung up on this that or the other fad which for me at least never amounted to much.

Looking forward to meeting you all, see you in the forums.

Sorry to see this! The good news is you can come back healthy and strong. Keep with the rehab, follow the instructions and don't push yourself. Now is the time to practice your patience, knowing this will pass and you'll make your way back to normal.

Hi from London, UK!

Hi All,

I'm James, 37. Have had a long interest in strength training and have dabbled with bits and pieces over the years but never with any consistency. Between the ages of 17-32 I was unfortunately in the grip of addiction to alcohol and other things... Obviously this interfered somewhat with both my desire and ability to train! But that's all behind me now and I'm starting with one of Pavel's deadlift and press routines.

In fact if I may ask my first question here: would there be anything wrong with doing deads per PTTP (2 X 5) but the press from the Delorme workout? My thinking is that I've had lower back pain issues in the past - hence the deads from PTTP. The Delorme hypertrophy routine for the presses? Vanity :-D

Hi Moogles. Welcome to the forum!

I've had the same type of problem with drugs. Ruined my life and my physique... Glad that ypu have chosen recovery, always good to hear that!

Regarding your training question... I'm not familiar with either of those programmes but if you start a new topic on the main board you'll get a better response.

Gods bless and all the best with your training and recovery!
Why do we fall down?
So we can learn how to pick ourselves up.

Hi, James, glad you're here. Pete's right about starting a new topic for a better response. A lot of people here have done Pavel's programs and can help, but are less likely to see your question here in the introduction thread.
