Just became a B-60 this summer. Been at it since I was 9, 51 years of pushing and pulling. Got all the normal{?} aches and pains associated with it. Recently, I was diagnosed with Barrets Esophagus, pre-dysplasic, and was told to change a few things in my diet, such as less B12, caffeine{ouch} and a few other things. Onward and upward...Have had to make an adjustment or two, but cant function without training. Really enjoy the site. I love "IRON IN MY HANDS" as so much in there applies to what I got going on these days. Thanks for being real....

My name is Chris. I am 45 years old and have always been primarily a powerlifter/strongman, but have done some bodybuilding off and on throughout my lifting career, which started when I was 15. I'm a boxer, wrestler, judoka and Arnis man, so lifting isn't my only means of training. I took a couple of years off and am now just starting back again going full force. I have been visiting this site for about 12 or so years, but never joined until recently. This is a great place with a total wealth of knowledge. I like the "old school" mentality of the place which fits right in with my mindset. Plus, you have a lot of older lifters here that were right there on the east and west coast strength and training scenes back in the 60's and 70's (Dave Draper one of them) when the "Golden Age" was in it's "heyday." I look forward to being part of the forum and contributing as much as possible. It's truly an "honor" to be here!

Hello everyone. I began weight training and studying all about it as a youth because I wanted to improve health. My father had been an Olympic style weightlifter and bodybuilder. He was all for it. I was lucky to encounter Dr. Carlin Venus and Vince Gironda who had a lot of knowledge. My dad bought me a subscription to the original Iron Man Magazine when Peary and Mabel Rader owned it and the Body Culture Equipment Company. They were wonderful and sincere. Articles by Jack LaLanne and Vince made sense to me, but not always to others in a small town! Many persons thought it strange that someone would have barbells, dumbbells, and equipment in their home. I thought it strange that they did not have them. Often it wasn't aging that was getting people, it was neglect of body and mind. I was so underweight at times some actually laughed.

While looking at human stress in grad school, it became apparent that there was negative and positive stress, which was not what was being taught. The other item of interest was that everything comes to us through our senses. We take in the world through information in the form of light and sound waves. This meant that we could change our environments in healthy ways and improve performance as well. The environment includes everything from a cell in our bodies up to what is all around us. It is what we see, hear, touch, breathe, eat, sense, and sometimes what we do not sense. Ever since laying hands on a barbell set I was thinking about how to get better results. I had the idea of creating a better environment that would support an improved outcome. Again, some people laughed.

One of the greatest joys is learning and seeing results with exercise. The most fun I ever had was building unique exercise equipment and then training with it! Have you ever had a magical time in life when things went really well? There was one happy year of doing the human performance test dreamed of. I was able to create the environment, equipment, and assemble a computer that was needed. Everything worked well beyond my dreams. People who had laughed stopped laughing. I wrote a book about the experience.

Weight training is about building minds, bodies, and lives while helping others. It is a community working for the good of all. I put up a website and make articles out of questions people send in. It is my way of saying thank you to Carlin Venus, Vince Gironda, the Raders, and everyone else who was kind enough to speak with me or write articles or replies when I had questions. If anyone has comments or wants to say hello, it would be great to hear from you. The address is https://www.doublebrainandbodypower.com

Wishing you all the best in life and health,
Mark

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking the forums and website for a couple years now. The community has always seemed pretty great, but seeing Dave decide to retire his weekly newsletter gave me the extra push to finally signup and join you all.

My exercise/training history goes back to about 2004. I joined the Marines after high school where training consisted of running, push ups and pull ups, fueled by ample alcohol. Once I got out in 2008 I didn't do much for a couple years except work and enjoy being 'free' again. Eventually I started feeling out of shape and crappy so I pulled out my basic barbell set I had in high school and started working through the various beginner routines. Since then I've made my way across various websites trying out numerous routines and methodologies before eventually finding my way here where I've read through piles of Dave and Dan's articles and even got a couple of Dave's books (signed too!).

My family has a poor history of longevity due to genetic heart disease. Dave and Dan have both discussed these issues in some form or another in their writing's as well as the importance of health in general which I've really appreciated. I'm currently married with two young boy's (4 & 5) and a girl set to arrive at the end of April. Due to work and family responsibilities I don't have the time (or desire really) to take up any kind of sport or competition, so my focus now is primarily on health and longevity.

My current goal is weight loss and I plan on getting a log started up here to track that.

Thanks!

New guy here from near Seattle. Just turned 40 and trying for those aesthetics now. Mostly lift in my home gym and working on dieting down without losing too much strength. Best deadlift was 500 best bench was 395 raw 435 with the slingshot. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Z

By way of introductions: well, "Big Fat Mama" was a B-24 Liberator in World War II, and many thousands of her sisters (the Ford version) were made just 15 miles from where I live. Since this is "bomber" themed I could not resist using a photo I took of one such B-24 at an airshow a few years back.

I grew up a "big fat mama" in the 60s, when fat girls were public expressions of the moral failures of their parents -- I weighed 225# when I was 15. I was the firstborn daughter of a big big man -- so big, his Air Force nickname was "Tiny." I had other less honorable nicknames growing up.

Fast forward: I'm 60 now and have been "intentionally training" since 2015, when I dropped out of the National Weight Control Registy because I was menopausal. I had lost weight down to about 155 over the course of my life and I knew I was just going to wind up fat again anyway. In a desperate attempt to bargain with the devil (my metabolism) I went lo-carb and "eating window."

Lost another 20 pounds 2015-2017 and so far, keeping to that approach, have mostly kept it off. (Mostly: because work-from-home and surgery recovery weight restrictions will add some padding.)

My Dad believed that weight lifting made women "bulky" but that did not extend to all the farm chores he needed me for on my Grandma's hobby farm growing up. (Right? You've heard of "farmer carries.")And cutting firewood and splitting it (axe and sledge with wedge). Hauling and hooking up antique farm machinery. Toting bags of chicken feed. Naaaaaahhhhh! THAT'S safe! It's those two 10-lb concrete filled dumbbells from Sears that you have to watch out for!

So here I am: I still pick things up and put them down, and always have. And bike and go for walks. But what I live for is that quiet moment on the hand-me-down bench with my Frankenstein dumpster weight plates. Yes, I spoiled myself to a Rogue squat rack and Bella bar a couple years ago ... my "pre-retirement" gift to myself. When I feel cooped up, there's always a sledgehammer and tire I can dig out ... reminds me of splitting wood in 1972 ...

Big Fat Mama, glad to be aboard. Keep 'em flying!

Hello there Ladies and Gents,

I've been lifting for about 10 years now, fell in love with the weights and bodybuilding in general during college. Father of two, I look forward to passing on my love of the sport and the iron to my kids someday. Just finished reading Brother Iron, Sister Steel and saw mention of a forum run by Mr. Draper and knew I had to check it out. Looking forward to talking with all of you.

Hi,

I'm Maria Lee from Singapore. I do training because I want a satisfaction to myself. In the past few years, I was categorize as Obese 2.

Since then, I started to diet at by having a sweet potato.. for about 2 weeks.. I stop that diet and do a clean diet.. I mean limit what I eat.. more on meat and less on fats especially no rice.

Now, I still don't eat rice and calculate my calorie intake based on the calculation of my required calories. Now, I just maintained my weight and slight exercise.
I used this program Minimal Fitness by Coach Lim and after a stressful day, I play thru here to enjoy myself.

Hi all,

This is kind of a re-introduction of sorts. You can see my original intro above from 2020. The date when I initially joined ended up being pretty bad timing for me. As discussed previously, we were expecting a new baby in April of that year (she's now a healthy and happy 2-year old), that combined with the Covid pandemic and some minor lingering injuries (just a little banged up from lifting, nothing serious, just required some rest), completely destroyed my exercise routine, resulting in an approximate 2 year break from any exercise. As a result I'd gotten pretty out of shape and gained some weight over the last two years.

Over the last year or so, a good friend of mine got back into exercising and got in quite good shape. He talked me into signing up for a Tough Mudder 5k this summer which succeeded in getting me back into exercising. In preparation, I mostly ran, some steady and some intervals, and did Dan John's Armor Building complex with Dumbbells in EMOM format. The day of the race came and I set myself a goal of completing it in less then 1.5 hours. While I did have to stop and walk a couple times to catch my breath, I finished in 1 hour and 10 minutes, and we all had a blast while doing it. I cannot express though how satisfying it was to put some money on the line, set a date to "compete", and see it through. As an added bonus, after the race, there was a competition for anyone who wanted to enter to see who could hold a case of energy drinks in outstretched arms the longest. I still didn't feel like I was in that great of shape yet, so I was hesitant to enter but I figured I had nothing to lose. In the end, I ended up outlasting about 13 other competitors and won myself a free Tough Mudder race for next year (I really feel the cleans from the ABC helped me here). My buddy and I are now signed up for the 15k race in 2023, giving me a good year of time to prepare and train for it.

After all this, I've got a rekindled passion for training, a new competition to train for, and some new personal training goals that I'll get into once I get my training log up and running here.

Finally, I just want to say I'm sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I really looked forward to his weekly newsletters every week while he was putting those out, and the books he signed for me will hold a treasured place on my book shelf for years to come.

Hi I'm Mike out of the SW US.

I'm going to cut out the whine I almost wrote.
I'm 50, 156 lbs. 5 foot 5 inches, and sedentary in addition to a modestly good list of permanent injuries.
My goals are lose fat for health, become more active , put on a bit of muscle I can maintain, and become more social (for my health).
Life time PR's or (due to injuries) real mass gain are long past me.
I joined this forum mostly to learn how life timer's keep going, and occasionally throw in two cents of personal experience.
Favorite reads have been Dan John and Pavel's Easy Strength, Beyond Brawn by Stuart McRoberts, and Lift your way to youthful fitness by Jan and Terry Todd.
I owe a lot to Pavel's writings because they introduced me to Dan John's.

HUGE Thanks to Dave Draper, may he rest in peace, and Laree Draper for keeping this going.
