Sunday pm

Tried a couple of quick beginner routines from the GMB fitness site. A 5 min core workout and a 5 min bodyweight circuit.

Absolutely destroyed me

I’m toying with the idea of joining a gym close to work or do I make more effort to use what I have or what I don’t need and train better at home.

At the moment it’s more convenient and disturbs the sleeping kids less if I can train indoors and with bodyweight and a kb.

If I join a gym I’ll only be able to use it on workdays and I’ll only use about 10% of the equipment at most. It’s also a real rush to get there and back and train in 30 mins or so!

It’s looking that way!

Have tried three local gyms now and none were overly inspiring. Bit of a drive to get to, not easy to park, not easy to get changed quickly... not much of a fun lunchbreak. Think it will end up becoming very stressful.

Think I’ll try to make more of an indoor space to do some basic bw, kb and db (if I can find some) training.

There is so much hassle in going to train at a gym for the grown adult with a job and a family...

Monday pm

Easy run 45 mins

A bit later on,

5 min GMB strength circuit

Few mins playing with one arm pushup regressions (one hand further and further out)

Quick play with hack squats after reading a Tom Furman article. Will try with a KB another day. Wasn’t sure if the mechanics would work at all but seems surprisingly comfortable.

Tuesday

Score! Picked up a pair of 15kg hex dumbbells for a massive bargain!

Was ideally hoping for a pair of 20s but I’ll keep an eye out and build up to that. Eventually a set of 15s, 20s and 25s would do for a decent home setup along with a couple of KBs.

Simple circuit for 8 rounds
5 RDL
5 press
5 bent row

Curls 4 x 5 just for fun

Next workout will be reverse lunges, pushups and renegade rows

Later, just as a bit of an experiment

Bw hack squats 3 x 5

I ran in regular shoes tonight instead of the barefoot merrells and my knees didn’t like it.

Hack squats seem to really focus on the knee so thought I’d see if they... I dunno... flush things out m aybe? Get some additional blood going through there... help or increase inflammation... who knows

The barefoot merrells as you say -do they still look like shoes sts? I happened to see a pair on sale yesterday and that sole still had some elaborate enough construction to steady the foot when running trail...or do you just have the 'rubber socks'?

Good job with hack sq!

I wear the Merrill Vapor Gloves. Still a shoe but very thin soft upper and a very thin flexible rubber sole with no cushioning at all. The outsole is just grooves in the thin rubber so no structure at all.

Crazily my knees have never felt better!

Fantastic! Thanks for your reply.

The shoe I saw was called "Merrell trail glove5 women" **...it looks similar to your type (on the picture anyhow). Good to hear your knees are feeling good.

** (A different shoe altoghether compared to i.e. Salomon trail that feels basically 'glued' on the foot but that's still just a normal type of shoe which has a good grip, is steady but the sole twists when it needs to. Not sure how 'the flats' would perform in mud and on twigs in a forest and in/on stone hills. I guess I won't know until I try it out.

My neighbor pierced her foot on a rotten twig (hidden in a moss) when she was running in a forrest last August. It resulted in two operations, an open wound,(anaerob bacteria--> a tricky infection, and IV antibiotics during 10 days, a week in hospital and 3 months recovery...I am not willing to risk that.)

Keep up the good work and I keep reading

I have Merrell Vapor Gloves and they're fine for pavement or dirt but not so good for rocks, mud or twigs. I believe the Trail Gloves have a somewhat thicker sole with lugs that do better in rougher terrain. I have Vibram Five Fingers in both water shoe and trail running versions and the latter are much more comfortable for rough going.

Thanks Steve. I appreciate to hear that.
There was a discussion about the Vibrams on this forum years ago I remember when they first appeared on the market. Larree always brought the best news info (Bosu,TRX and D vit e.t.c.)

This week has just been too busy and hectic.

Picked up a second hand exercise bike today as my wife has been wanting one and it won’t hurt me to have an indoor alternative to running. It’s a fairly decent almost commercial quality machine that will do the job, and quietly.

Very tired tonight but did a quick 20 mins on the bike and 2 x 10 pushups before bed

REALLY need to start getting up earlier and running in the morning. Life just keeps getting in the way in the evenings.

Tuesday am

Finally got up early and got a run in.

New pair of Altra Escalantes I got for my birthday - more cushioned but still foot-shaped and zero drop like the merrells - felt strange running in cushioned shoes again but much better in these than regular high-drop shoes

Hmm, interesting. I tried on HOKA this week (because of smaller drop so I thought.)
Speedgoat 4 -I couldn't have them. It was so much material under my foot so it couldn't send a proper feed back to the brain so to speak and on top they were too tight.

Then I tried HOKA Challenger(ATR 6) - but that shoe made me *confused* like it was a shoe and it was not...(perhaps because it's built for everything and nothing).

Cheers!

Hoka tend to have a 'rocker' sole - which means even though the drop is lower than a traditional runner, the middle of the shoe is thicker, and it changes the way your foot rolls through the stride. They are also pretty soft EVA foam.

The Altra Escalante are 25mm from heel to toe

Gave up on trying to do any training over the last few days. Lots of quality family time and playing games with the kids

Sunday pm

Run 5km easy

Then a quick workout while making dinner, inspired by DJs recent YouTube easy strength explainer video.

24kg goblet squat 2 x 5
Press 2 x 5/5
Ring pull-up 6 x 1
Swings 5 x 15
Suitcase walks

Since workout time will continue to be hard to find over the next few weeks, and the weather is also insanely hot, perhaps I can just do this most days in about 10 mins without really even breaking a sweat. We’ll see...
