Monday

Wrists still sore but improving. Went to the gym anyway with the plan of just doing some sort of warmup and then accessory stuff. But then when I got there I tried taping my wrists and it seemed to help massively. So I left them taped and did my warmup including some muscle snatches with the empty bar which felt ok.

Stuck 5s on the bar and tried a snatch which also felt fine.

Snatch 30kg 5x1, 32.5kg 2x1, 35kg 2x1, 30kg 2x1
C&J 50kg 5 x 1

Snatches felt good. No missed reps for a change so didn't push my luck. Really would like to be able to START with 40kg soon.

C&J focused on the making the jerk faster and the split deeper, and catching the bar in the correct position. Been catching it in front a lot which is no good. Today was better.

Thanks mate. It’s almost as though this stuff works!

Not sure what my all time PR is but probably around 75kg. Don’t remember ever putting 80kg up. “Feels” as though I should be able to just keep going and hopefully end up there soon enough.

40kg snatch felt ok today too. Really hoping to make that my new “easy” soon. Seems nuts when comparing the actual load to KBs - a pair of 20s would be nothing but on a bar it seems heavier.

I'm complete opposite, the idea of snatching a pair of 20s, 24s or 32s is scary to me.

Maybe barbell Power Snatch is closer to snatching a pair KBs? Not many people would catch the 'bells in a deep squat position. I've seen one video of a guy doing overhead squats with 32s, that requires some serious shoulder flexibility (on top of everything else!).

Yeah, it's interesting on the loading of bar vs KBs. I've basically been doing nothing but KBs for about two years, and then decided randomly to start lifting a bar again, and 115 on a bar is totally different and feels "heavier" than a pair of 28k KBs. My hypothesis is that you can use so much more hip drive with KBs because of where you can put them between your legs that the bar just requires more in the way of upper body activation and so naturally just seems heavier for the weight you're lifting. Not sure if that made any sense now that I've typed it out LOL, but I do know what you mean!

Oh no I didn't mean snatching a pair of bells or overhead squatting them - I've never been able to do that and probably never should. But even simple lifts such as double kb jerks - I could do a load of reps with a pair of 24s but a 50kg barbell split jerk "seems" a lot heavier ...and less efficient?

...but then maybe there is a point where that also crosses over - eg I can jerk a 60kg bar ok, and even 70kg, but guess I would not want to be doing double jerks with 32s.

I haven't thought this through :)

Yes, there is most definitely a crossover point, somewhere around that 135-lb barbell vs 2 x 32k KB point you've just identified -- after that it is far easier to use a bar!

I see, thanks for the explanation!

Occasionally I've done some double KB C&Ps and front squats. I think what makes it harder than using a barbell is that in the rack position the KBs push against your lungs. So you have to keep bracing yourself to keep breathing. Also trying to coordinate two objects is difficult.

One of the worst feelings I've had is wearing a 20kg vest and doing double KB front squats with a pair of 24s (or mine are 25s). 70kg barbell front squat is a walk in the park in comparison.

I think I remembered that wrong! I've only done Goblet Squats with a weighted vest. My best was with 40kg KB + 20kg vest for 10 reps, which was horrible.

I think I was looking for a low back friendly squat alternative.

I found a decently priced used barbell and set of bumpers on the weekend, and have started the cancellation of my gym membership today.

It has proved to be too hard to fit travel time, changing clothes time, training time AND getting changed again and getting back to work - into my 30 min lunchbreak! Plus with another covid resurgence on the horizon I get the feeling gyms won't remain open for long - and even if they do, won't be the safest place to hang out.

It's really gotten me back into training though, and particularly into learning the o-lifts.

I will start building a suitable area in the garden to continue training. For now as the loads are low I can just continue to train as I have been with just a couple of rubber mats. I just need to get hold of a few small plates to be able to continue using the same 2.5kg increments.

Currently have:

20kg bearing barbell
2x20kg bumpers
2x10kg handle grip plates (not bumper size)
2x5kg bumpers

I will keep a lookout for 1.25kg and 2.5kg plates, and at some point to swap the 10kg plates for bumpers too.

I only intend to train 3 days a week, as 4 proved too many last week again, and I really felt it over the weekend.

Hoping now the kids are getting a little older it will be easier to find enough time to get 3x30min sessions a week - which, without the travel time etc should be more than enough!

Tuesday am

First home weightlifting workout at 6am

Took it a little easy as it was way earlier than usual and fasted too

Broomstick warmup 3x5
Snatch 40kg 5 x 2
C&J 60kg 3 x 1
Front squat 3 x 3

Thought as I have a bit more time to play with - and don’t need to pack away the weights and clean chalk off things - or drive back to work! - that I’d try finishing with front squats for 3x3 with whatever load I used for C&Js …so not heavy, just a touch of extra strength work.

Incidentally I noticed today my front squats felt 1000 x better than they ever have. No problem holding the rack or keeping elbows up - even with hands fully gripping the bar …which is nice
