That was a fast turn around. I had my 13 Week Fighter Workout rejected, but the roots of it are going to be a series.

Carry heavy things!

The fighting article was good, but maybe not a right fit for the type of people on TNation. Dan, you might want to see if you can get it as a part of one various MMA magazines, or big training sites, or maybe EliteFTS.

I should carry more heavy stuff around.

I think I'm going to take my sandbag for a walk tomorrow.

I have been reading Art De Vany's book "The New Evolution Diet". The premise being that we need to diet and exercise like caveman. The carries tie nicely into carrying a carcus across the back or chest, carrying hunks of meat or water in each hand. This is something I need to do more, have already ordered duffel bags.

I wouldn't write about that...I have no experience. It turns out my musings are on track, but one should go to the sources...

Would it be titled, "A Musing Read"?

Great article.

I've always believed in carries and dragging, but I'm not consistent. One summer, I did a three week stint of harness dragging and sandbag shoulder carries and it had a great impact with my GS lifts at the time (without doing that much GS lifts, I should add!).

Something I have no experience with, since my days in steel reinforcement. Lots of walking with steel bars on one shoulder or the other. A preferred shoulder often, the number one. Interesting that you mentioned shoulder sandbag carries Boris. Was thinking of going to Home Depot and picking up a bag. Wondering if a shoulder carry is a good movement. Seems like the front carry is also done, and overhead too, if possible?

I'm not going great guns right off. Just intrigued by sand bags. Will be in my small basement for a bit yet, snow and ice out there, and the yard has a good 5 or 6 feet of snow out back.

Erwin, for your basement, have you looked at Bulgarian bags? Only need space to stand up.

Carry heavy things!

This article came just as I was deciding to add more carries, mostly b/c I saw how shockingly out of shape I was and this is about as cardio as I want to get, but also b/c carrying heavy stuff is just part of being able to lift/move heavy stuff range.
Can say so far - good stuff! Hearty grip work. Farmers work the lats in a surprising manner.
Have done some plate carries - just pick up 2-3 45lb plates and clutch to chest for the laps.
It's been "one lift plus one carry a day" lately and it seems about right. Squats then farmers, push-presses then farmers...

Yesterday I carried heavy things. My basement is small, but I figured what the heck, picked up a couple of 45# dumbbells, as well as my 53 and 35# kettle bells. Walked back and forth have a dozen times, 20 feet or so. So not "heavy" but I've never done anything like this before. Eureka. The light came on and I realize I am missing something. Waiter walks and suitcase carries to follow.

I really like these carries but I'm running into obstacles when trying to go heavier. I have been carrying my two 40kg bells in the backyard which is pretty nice but kicking it up a notch is proving difficult. I've tried to do the delicate balancing act of carrying two loaded barbells but it's pretty sketchy-- they are always trying to tip over one way or another.

Is there a cool trick to help with the balance that doesn't involve buying those special farmers walk bars? I searched around to see if there were some simple attachable handles but couldn't find anything.

thanks!

Thanks, I hadn't considered a home setup since I only have kettlebells. Maybe I can find some cheapo iron from craigslist to try this!

carry one kb in each hand and drag another behind you, if you can spare the lawn damage.

Related update: am still doing one lift, one carry every workout. did squats today (well, front and back) and three farmers walks, working up to 1/2 bodyweight db in each hand.
am noticing faster recovery from the work, and my body weight hasn't gone up, dropped one pound (negligible) even as i am lifting heavier and indulging pretty heftily after my workout (think kids cereal with whole milk as a desert to a solid balanced meal already).
Of carries I am a convert.

It seems this article has generated quite a buzz. My RSS reader filled with strength coach blogs has had a number of references. Tony Gentilcore of Cressey Performance in particular seems to be a big fan. This is the latest of three or four blog posts referencing carries inspired by Dan, this one including a video of TG's efforts:

every time I do the waiters walk I curse the name Dan John. My shoulders do for 3 days afterward. I am sure that this means it is good for me. Farmers seem just as beneficial without the cursing

Can you do carries on a treadmill in a commercial gym or is that asking for trouble?
