Gunvalds log: Vince Gironda style all the way
03-11-09 09:55 PM - Post#535027

Gunvald:

You are beginning to understand. What you did before was weight lifting. You merely pushed a weight to completion without thinking about it. You tried to lift heavy and in reasonably good form. This is great if you want mainly strength and some muscle.

However, if you want to reshape your body, you have to think about what you're doing. Each movement is a tool and should be used in a way that benefits you and your goal(s.) Vince used to make it a matter of choice - you have to decide if you're going to be a weight lifter or a bodybuilder. You can get more bicep development out of curls with a 25-30 pound dumbbell, than you can by using a 50 pound dumbbell...provided that you THINK about what you're doing.

Another well-known bodybuilder that trains in the same manner is Serge Nubret. He handles weights that many would consider very moderate, if not light...but the way he concentrates into the movement and how he uses the weight, makes it seem heavy to his muscles.

The benefit of training moderately like this is that you'll spare yourself joint and tendon trauma, as well as preserving your central nervous system...not to mention that you'll build cosmetically pleasing muscle.

You're beginning to understand...good work.

I notice some strength and endurance increase since last back/bic workout.
This time I rested 19 sec on chins and rows and it didn't feel that hard. I think I could have managed 15 sec on both exercises. Not in a rush though so 17 sec will do next time. Biceps felt stronger too. Last time I had 1 or 2 reps left but this time I had at least 3 maybe 4 left.

The pump was the best one so far and I have never felt my back work like this, esp when I was rowing. Damn I love this feeling, it was 20 mins. of maximum satisfaction. I don't know what kind of hormones get activated by this Vince Gironda training but it sure is something amazing. A "feel good" feeling all over.

20 sets - 20:05 min (40 sec cut)
20 min walk

Chins (chins machine)
bw + 200lbs assistance - 20 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
19 sec RI felt hard but nowhere close to max. 17 sec RI next time!

Cable Rows v-bar

65x20
90x12
90x12
90x12
90x12
Same here, 19 sec RI was no sweat. 17 sec RI next time.

DB curls
11x20
17.5x12
17.5x12
17.5x12
17.5x12
Not that close to fail this time! Had 3-4 more on last set.

BB Wrist Curls

28x20
40x12
40x12
40x12
40x12
Same as biceps! Not that close to fail, 3-4 reps left. RI gets cut by 2 sec for next time.

Intake:
2100cal
110gr fat
200gr protein
75gr carbs

75 gr carbs! Well lets see how that affects me tomorrow. No sweat I'd think.

999 left.

And there is a lot more to come.
I will post results next saturday and we will see what has happened after 1 month of Vince Gironda training. Learning is very fun but the results are even more fun =)

Bill

Yes Bill you are so right. I really feel that I was just lifting the weight for the most of the time when I was exercising heavy. Vince Gironda style is so much more enjoyable! I feel connected with my muscles and it gets better every week. Today I felt some kind of contact like never before. Rowing and DB curls felt amazing.

"decide if you're going to be a weight lifter or a bodybuilder"
Bodybuilder all the way, weights have no meaning for me anymore, I really mean that.
I'm chasing contact, tension and racing the clock. I'm happy with that!

Yeah you helped me understand a lot.
Too bad it's 1 week left of this helping. But at least I'm on the right path and with the help of Vince Gironda files and his best book I will continue this long journey.

Gunvald:

Although our formal relationship as trainer/trainee will end on March 18...don't worry, I won't abandon you. I'll still answer your questions (when asked) and help you out when you seek advice. I just won't be posting as frequently and extensively. You've a good foundation upon which to build now...and that is really what I wanted to impart to you.

When it is all said and done...we have to be our own best instructor...with the occasional coaching from outside appreciated when necessary. I'll be looking forward to seeing evidence of your progress...but I think the best thing you've obtained from our exchange is the discovery/return of your joy in training.

Cajin John, Charlie Barber (CB2) and Kris (sweatn) are also excellent sources of wisdom and information regarding Vince styled training. If I know them at all...I'm sure they would be glad to help you anytime you asked.

That pretty low carb intake yesterday did not affect me today. Energy lvl was 10/10. I had the best leg workout today. The pain was crazy because I kept tension in every rep when I was squatting. I feel that strength has increased since the last leg workout. Calves have gotten stronger too. Very satisfying to notice results from workout to workout. Feels amazing.

15 set - 23:05 min (30 sec cut)
20 min cardio

Front squat

45x20
65x12
65x12
65x12
65x12
51 sec RI, going down to 48 next time.

Seated leg curl

50x20
70x12
70x12
70x12
70x12

Standing calf raise (smith machine)
20x45
12x65
12x65
12x65
12x65
calves are getting strong very fast, I could cut down 5-6 sec but Bill suggested 2-3 sec so Ill go with that.

Intake:
2350cal
105gr fat
235gr protein
110gr carbs

Cheat meal tomorrow.
Ima get me some home mode cheese and apple pie.

Ty Bill. You have showed me the path. All I have to do now is walk the 1000 miles journey.
I'm glad you guys are here in case I need to ask questions. I also will have Vince Girondas material soon. All in all everything feels great, not worried at all.

evidence of your progress
I don't mean to brag but the nutrition and the workout you put me on works great. I must have lost 15lbs so far and my arms don't look smaller. I wonder how that is possible!

Can't wait to see what has happened next Saturday.

Indeed, I learn stuff from Bill(and Cajin, and Charlie when he writes :) every time I read his stuff, even if I kinda already know it. I started out doing Vince style stuff, not knowing what I was doing. I had a killer workout partner, He'd do a set, then me, no rest. We didn't know any better, being both stupid and young, great combo.....

Thank you CJ, ill cut down 2 sec. even if it feels like I could cut down 10 sec. sometimes.
"Make haste slowly" seems to be very important.

A lot of reading left, that's for sure but the knowledge and inspiration I pick up there is priceless.

A confession is to be made!

I suck at baking (making?) pies.
Yesterdays menu was cheese and apple pie. I can't say it tasted that good. Next time I will just go and buy me a piece of delicious pie and enjoy. Calorie cons. yesterday was...umm..Do I dare to even say it? 4500-5000 calories and 500-600gr carbs. Protein intake was very low.

The worst part is, I didnt even enjoy it that much. I don't throw food that I make so I ate it all up. Didn't expect it to be 5000 cal though. Never mind, lesson learned. No more home made pies for me.

Plan for today is to stay very very low on carbs and low on calories. My tanks are filled so I guess I don't need to fill up so much today. I will do some extra cardio today.

You'll start to lose the gotta binge feeling after a while. A small slice of something generally will be enough, not a whole pie, quality over quantity. Your getting there.

I have gone back on what I call P&B (power and bulk), but I don't eat stupid. I eat a high protein meals. If you must eat a cheat do a piece of fruit. This will solve the suger craiving. Like Kris said this will go away soon. Learn to listen to what your body really wants. When it says suger it really wants protein type food. Where you live there must be a lot of fish available.

yep I think so too, I wasn't careful at all yesterday. Made 2 pies and I don't even know why. All I ate yesterday was pie pie pie.

This will not happen again.
The worst part is, I could have eaten 1/2 of what I ate and be happy with that. But I didn't want to throw the rest. (or maybe I'm just making an excuse to myself).

Off to gym, today is gonna be the best work out so far. Feeling like a adrenalin pumped boxer.

My feeling didn't lie to me :)
The best workout so far and I felt like energized bunny. Gotta be all that pie I ate yesterday. At least something positive came out of it.

70min morning cardio (fast walking)
30min post wo. cardio

BB press (behind neck)
30x20, 45x12, 45x12, 45x12, 45x12
( 23 sec RI, and the strength has increased since last workout )

Triceps press down
30x20, 45x12, 45x12, 45x12, 45x12+4 burns
( 20 sec RI like last time but this time I did 4 burns and I had 2-3 more. Going down to 18 sec next time)

Intake:
1600cal
90gr fat
180gr protein
20gr carbs

Very low intake but I got some carbs and calories to burn from yesterday. Going back to normal intake tomorrow.

I actually loved fish when I lived at home.
I remember that my mother used some marinade and let the fish meat stay in it for a week or so.

Swear to god, that fish tasted better then steak!
Maybe I should phone her and ask her how she does it.

You definitely should give it a try.
If you are a very competitive type of person then Vince Gironda style is something you will like. I just love chasing seconds and cutting time from workout to workout. It makes me feel good because I know 100% that i have achieved progression. Cutting seconds every workout is possible while increasing weight and reps is not.

So far I love it and I'm only on a 4x12 routine.
The real fun starts when you do 6x6 and 8x8 or 10-8-6-15.

50 sec cut! Makes me so glad.
Had so much more to give in chins and rows.
Biceps and forearms got burned good. Not much left there. Energy levels very very high and yesterdays 20gr carb intake did not affect me at all today. It's getting weird in the gym, people are giving me strange looks. I did 20 sets in 19 mins today and one of the guys was very impressed. After the workout he aproached me and asked stuff. I enjoyed it.

20 sets - 19:15 min (50 sec cut)
20 min. walk

Chins (chins machine)
bw + 200lbs assistance - 20 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
bw + 175lbs assistance - 12 reps
17 sec RI felt "easy". Finally on to 15 sec RI next time! Big achievement for me.

Cable Rows v-bar
65x20 - 90x12 - 90x12 - 90x12 - 90x12
( 17 sec RI did not feel that easy but I had at least 5 maybe 6 reps left on last set=) Going for 15

DB curls
11x20 - 17.5x12 - 17.5x12 - 17.5x12 - 17.5x12
( 25 sec RI and I don't think I had more then 2 left on last set ) Make haste slowly. Staying on 25sec even next time.

BB Wrist Curls

28x20 - 40x12 - 40x12 - 40x12 - 40x12
Last set was close to fail, had 1 more. Staying on 25 for next time.

Intake:
2150cal
105gr fat
210gr protein
90gr carbs

Good work, Gunvald. You're now beginning to train by feel. At the end of your thirty days...take four days off. Walk, play a game of basketball or something, swim...do anything LIGHTLY, except use the weights. After that four day rest...pick up the 4x12 and keep going. You'll know when it's time to change...you'll be bored and looking for excuses to skip training and you won't be pumping up as much. IF and WHEN that occurs...contact me and I'll explain the 6x6 for you.

You've been a good and enthusiastic student. I hope you've enjoyed your "new" style of training and diet. Feel free to contact me with questions and I promise I'll get back to you...I'm just a keyboard away.

Sounds good. I will take a 4 days rest after tomorrow.
Will do a lot of walking and maybe some easy jogging. I will exhaust the 4x12 routine and use it to the max before I move on to 6x6. Been doing it for 3 weeks now and It feels more and more fun so I reckon it will take many weeks before I will move to 6x6. As much as I want to start the 6x6 and 8x8 I will not rush it. I must go by feel.

I have been enjoying this more then I expected that I would.
The "low" carb diet is working great and the workout style fits me and my personality. Gives me adrenaline kicks (or something) every time I do a workout. Couldn't be more happy then this, feels like I discovered a new world of body building.

I thank you so much for all the help Bill. I don't think that I could have found better PT.
One day I will have my own gym (at least thats the plan) and I will spread the Vince Gironda philosophy all over the place. I have big plans but first things first.

Bravo! Well done! It was an event!!!

Too much lactic acid today. The pain was unbelievable. Non lockout squatting with 12 reps is a crazy thing thats for sure. I had to force an adrenalin kick to manage through. Had an amazing feeling when I was done with the whole workout.

15 set - 22:45 min (20 sec cut)
No cardio today.

Front squat

45x20 - 65x12 - 65x12 - 65x12 - 65x12
( 48 sec RI was tough but I feel ready for 46 )

Seated leg curl
50x20 - 70x12 - 70x12 - 70x12 - 70x12
( no problems here )

Standing calf raise (smith machine)
20x45 - 12x65 - 12x65 - 12x65 - 12x65
( calve sets felt like walk in a park, I could cut 5 sec each workout on calves, but but...make haste slowly as CJ said. So 2-3 sec will be enough )

Intake:
2300cal
115gr fat
205gr protein
100gr carbs

And so ends the thirty days.

Gunvald, please post your weight, measurements and a photo if possible, so that your progress can be documented. My guess is that you've probably lost 12-15 pounds in the process of applying Vince Gironda principles to your workout. Most of your measurements should have stayed the same or decreased just slightly.

Let me leave you and all that have been following this "experiment" something to consider:

You don't need bulk.

Now, by "bulk" I mean more than 10-15 pounds maximum of excess tissue. A small amount of extra weight, especially in the colder climates, helps you train. Anything over that is useless.

Take two fellows at the beach. Both have 17 inch arms, a 48 inch chest and a sturdily muscled back. One fellow has a 35 inch waist, the other a 40 inch waist. Want to bet which fellow will be considered "in shape?"

Your eye is naturally drawn to the center of things and the human body isn't any different. A tight midsection with well-defined abdominals will catch the eye, even if the other measurements are average.

The ancient Greeks understood this property of the eye and exploited it in their architecture and their sculpture of the human form. Vince also understood this and worked hard to cultivate a small waist. If the trainee didn't have the necessary structure, Vince attempted to manipulate the body growth to create the "illusion" of wide shoulders and a small waist.

If you're going to train for bodily aesthetics...don't let the quest for size overrule the waistline. Bill Pearl used to say he felt that he would get as big as possible as long as he could show a good abdominal formation. It certainly worked for him.

Bill I don't know if I dare to post my results. I aint sure how people will respond to this. I do not have a digital camera to prove anything. But I will borrow one when I will be visiting my parents in 6-7 weeks. The results are not "very believable" and I so wish that I had a digi cam so I could prove what has happened. Maybe I should wait till I get that digi cam in 6 weeks and have a real proof instead of empty words.

I'm aware that people on this forum are very mature but still it feels uncomfortable to bring these kind of results without a real proof which in this case would be a photo of my progress. I'm afraid that some negative discussion could turn out very fast.

All I can say is the results are very satisfying and a lot more then I could have dreamed about. And the funny thing is, I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

I will enjoy my 4 days rest and I can not wait to start again on Sunday. It's time to put in 3'd gear.

Humor me and post your results anyway.

Most of the folks here know that with proper training and nutrition, results can sometimes be startling. In your case, there should be no cause for negative discussion. You cut your food intake in half, changed the nutrient ratios and changed your training style. Couple that with a fierce drive to succeed and persistent, consistent training...and how could you not have results?

Knowing the weight loss and the new waist measurement would be sufficient for me.

No worry about negative here on the blogs. It's about support, and a little teasing which keeps it fun. A lot of us know one another from bashes(yearly eat and meet, with a little lifting thrown in :) This is not your average forum, I assure you.
What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach.

I'm so sad that I do not have a digi cam. I could have posted a photo and my results without anyone doubting.Well anyway I hope you guys believe me. PS. photo will be posted in 6-8 weeks when I get digi cam. I can promise that with 100%.

Here goes...

Results
Weight: 207lbs now - (230lbs one month ago)
Arms: 16.0" now - (16.1" one month ago)
Waist: 42" now - (46" one month ago)
Chest: 44.6" now - (45.5" one month ago)
Thighs: 24.3" now - (24" one month ago)
Calves: 16.6" now - (16" one month ago)

What seems crazy is that I have lost 23lbs and not more then 0.1" on arms. Even more crazy is that my thighs got 0.3" bigger and calves 0.6" bigger.
How in the... could this be possible! I know that beginners can make results like this but I have been exercising for almost 3 years, I aint no beginner whos body is not used to body building. I don't know, I'm very happy but all this is too confusing.

Thank you...I don't doubt your measurements at all. The measurement claims are in line with my experience training people. The small amount lost on the arms was fat. Even though your arms measure smaller, I'll bet they look bigger.

The increase in the thighs is from the non-lockout squats, pure and simple. They place the thighs under fairly continuous tension, as well as the calves (mostly as a stabilizer.) They simply have to grow to accommodate the increased stress.

The training information was good...and the student's adherence to it was also very good. That's why you experienced such results.

Thank you for giving me the chance to help you out. Enjoy your short layoff...then continue training this way...it apparently agrees with you very much.

Wicked

EDIT: And did I mention that I was quite pleased with your results?

Ty so much. I'm happy you enjoyed reading it.

If I was gonna post this on bb.com I swear I would get jumped. But lets see how the situation develops in here.

Thanks, I considered this period as a warm up.
The real thing is starting on Sunday and I will challenge my body a little more then I did so far.

Bill
Yeah, arms do look bigger and so does my chest.
Can't believe I put on muscle mass while I lost 23 lbs of weight. I dont dare to say this to anyone in the gym, they think thats impossible. (and so did I before today ). When I weighed myself I got shocked. Then I measured my arms and thought, this can not be. They got only 0.1" smaller, I was expecting at least 0.8" (2cm)smaller arms because of so much weight loss. I had to measure my calves 5 times to be really sure they measured 16.6". Couldn't believe they grew 0.6" while I lost 23lbs.

Jesus Christ!
All this on such a low volume and light weights!!! I would have never believed this if someone told me.

I'm motivated more then ever and I can't really wait to take next step on Sunday! (counting hours)

Finally, 4 days of rest is over. I missed my exercising too much and I'm extremely happy to be back. Todays workout was the best one so far though I felt like I had a hangover whole day. Once I warmed up and put my MP3 on I was in the zone. The pump was the best one I had so far and the lactic acid was very strong and annoying, it pissed me off.

15 sets - 12:20 min (25 sec cut)
60min morning cardio
20min post wo. cardio

Neckpress

65x20 - 100x12 - 100x12 - 100x12 - 100x12
( 21 sec RI, I think ill stay on this RI for next workout )

BB press
(behind neck)
30x20 - 45x12 - 45x12 - 45x12 - 45x12
( 21 sec RI, not ready for a 2 sec drop next time )

Triceps pressdown

30x20 - 45x12 - 45x12 - 45x12 - 45x12
( 18 sec RI felt okay, ready for 16 sec)

Intake:
2000cal
95gr fat
235gr protein
40gr carbs

Low carb intake today and tomorrow.
I have rested for 4 days and I haven't really been cheap on carbs so my tanks are full.
