I think i remember some of these shots, from the collection of STRENGTH and HEALTH magazines i still have back home in Cuba,i love the golden era,i wish i was born in those times,It must be so strange, for you guys reading my post right here on IOL now ,that when all this guys were in action at muscle beach and everywhere else, i was doing their routines and watching all their steps from a very small island in the Caribbean ocean. It was like i was there in California, and i used to picture it like so,i was just starting my journey to muscle kingdom, what a ride still is. i just loved bodybuilding since i saw these old magazines from those times,Strength and Health,Muscle builder.Muscle Power and others.what times!,This is a shot i include of me at 21, when i first won my first trophy.Long live the golden era of BB!Victor Ivan,

yeah Michelle, this is a great topic,Can i add one of my favorite shots from those times, may be you all have seen it many times,I just wanted to tell Mr. Draper that this picture was at the entrance of the gym that i had in Santa Clara,Cuba for many years,we had blown up to the picture to poster size, and placed it on the wall behind the front desk, and that was the first image you had on your thoughts before you started bombing..guess who?

That was THE photograph that inspired me to take up weight training. I still am in awe of it today.

So that's the one WW,thing is as you must know ,that one, is a damn difficult pose;to make it look good, you must have some wicked forearm and arm development to start with, otherwise you would look rediculous, and Draper clearly mastered it,what o shot this image is.Cheers vic.

Amazing but I had been contemplating making a post about that photo myself! I just hadn't gotten around to it and you beat me to it. I don't know how to show a picture on the computer so I was going to try to describe it. That is perhaps my favorite photo of all time-it often appeared in ads in the boxing/wrestling magazines I used to read when I was 12-14 yrs. old. That shot was a HUGE inspiration to me-it completely captured my imagination as a young boy and inspired me to want to work out with weights. I especially loved how huge and ripped Dave's forearms looked and the great V shaped taper and the way the lats were visable fromthe front-it still has the same effect on me!

I think Dave had the best forearms ever-his combination of size with extreme vascularity and definition were unbeatable! When I look at that shot I have to go do some wrist curls!

Dunno. If I had to guess...I'd say they were blunt toe engineer or harness boots.

Hey Queen, yes, the picture was behind the front desk at my gym,Draper was well known among bodybuilders in Cuba too,as much as the other bombers of the times,Grimeck,Pearl,Park, Reeves,Delinger,Eiferman, Schaefer,Ross,Poole, etc. For us in Cuba it was like time stopped ever since in bodybuilding, after 1965 these magazines would never be seen ever again till the 80's when canadian tourists started visiting Cuba ,and then again i was able to get back on track and see that the sport had already change drastically forever.I was happy though ,that by then i had already built a physique the real way.

Muscle Beach
01-30-10 03:44 PM - Post#602935

I just finished reading the book, Muscle Beach, by Marla Matzer Rose. It was a fun read. Loads of info about those early days. It started as a mecca for acrobatic athletes who weight trained as well. Soon, the weight lifters and bodybuilders took over. The locals didn't like all the traffic they brought and didn't like these "different" athletes. When a sex scandal was exposed, it gave them an excuse to close it down. However, it was great reading about Pudgy and Lee Stockton, Jack LaLanne, George Eiferman and all the other old time greats. Great photos as well.

You know Charlie, I don't remember. I bought it a long time ago and it sat on my shelf with all the other bodybuilding books. I think it might have been on Amazon. I just checked there and they have new and used ones available. It's a small book and a quick, fun read. I think you would enjoy it. Really tells about the start and growth of the real Muscle Beach in Santa Monica, not Venice, CA.

It closed down because of a sex scandal? What exactly happened? Also when did the org muscle beach in Santa Monica close down and when did the one in Venice Beach open up? (I traiend at the one in Venice and it was awesome, I loved it)

That makes sense in a way, but they still shouldnt of closed muscle beach down because they attracted gay men.

It wasn't because it attracted gay men. It closed down for many reasons according to the book. The author said that it was a blue collar town and the comic book atmosphere was a turn off to the residents. They apparently didn't want their town to be famous for men and women in tiny outfits who were flexing their muscles. In the early days, it was more acrobatics than muscle display but moved in the bodybuilding direction later on. The sex scandal, again according to the author, involved 5 men - at least two were bodybuilders - who took two young teen-aged runaways (one was 14 and one was 12) and brought them to a nearby hotel for sex. They were arrested for statutory rape and the crime was used as the final nail in the coffin for muscle beach. The town council was waiting for an excuse to shut it down. And they did.

The book is really interesting and has great photos. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the history of Muscle Beach.

This is a quote from the link:

  • Quoting:

It didn't help that body-builders attracted gay men; the Evening Outlook charged that Muscle Beach had become "a favorite haven of the sexual athletes and queers of Southern California," a place for "athletes and their followers of all three sexes." (I'm lifting these quotes from the excellent history of Muscle Beach written by Marla Matzer Rose: Muscle Beach: Where the Best Bodies in the World Started a Fitness Revolution, which is available at the Historical Society.)

It probably also didn't help that the strong and fearless women of Muscle Beach projected an unabashedly feminine yet pre-feminist image not consistent with 50s female docility.

The attraction of gay men was a contributing factor but the "sex scandal" was not about homosexuality but as I wrote above which is from the book, "Muscle Beach." The question from ShortMonster was what was the sex scandal that precipitated the closing of Muscle Beach.

Is Venice Beach still considered in the mecca of bodybuilding like it was in the 70s?

Nope! Since Body Building really took off... there are several real hot spots. Venice is one, the New York area and might possibly be a bigger hot spot "sorry California dudes" we're gain'en on ya, Florida and Texas are the others.

But.... Venice Beach will always, always, always be hallowed ground so to speak of Body Building. Which is probably written somewhere on a Venice Beach sidewalk...

Venice and Santa Monica are a couple of miles apart...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_Beach

But do share...

  • Quoting:

Muscle Beach refers to either Muscle Beach Venice, an area in Venice, California, United States, on Ocean Front Walk two blocks north of Venice Boulevard or to Original Muscle Beach, the actual and original location of "Muscle Beach", located on the beach two miles north of Venice, just south of Santa Monica Pier.

Weider was an east-coaster...he moved out to west-coast, and the rest is history...

The book DD has at this site about the time is good to read...

The first two photos are from Santa Monica - the original Muscle Beach. Not sure about the third photo. The last one is from the "new" Muscle Beach - Venice Beach.

I really liked working out at the New Muscle Beach Gym...

But there is a catch...

You gotta get there when it opens, 9:00am and get outta there be for the place get crowded with all sorts of humanity.

Other than that... I always think back to being able to lifting on the beach, hearing the waves, smelling the salt air. A really great experience.

Muscle Beach equipment and Dungeon
09-25-10 10:17 PM - Post#648962

With reference to the question about the disposition of Muscle Beach equipment -the Dungeon- etc. - When the weights came off the beach they were stored by Baron Leone, the wrestler. They then went to the Alley Gym between Ocean Avenue and Second Street, which was the first off beach location for the Muscle Beach Weightlifting Club. Then in the early 1960s (pre-Draper) to the Dungeon at 4th and Broadway.

Thanks for the information!
Did you lift weights at any of those places?
