Back and Hams- 1/18

Lat Pulldowns to the Front

120/12; 180/11; 195/8; 210/5

Hammer Iso Row

90/12; 200/12; 250/10; 270/8

Close Grip Pulley Rows

165/12; 180/11; 195/9

Again, another tough day at the gym. I ran totally out of gas and had to skip the shrugs and hamstring work. Yesterday I thought that I might be coming down with something. Today I am nor so sure. I didn't feel ill - just lethargic and not psyched about going to the gym. I have been slowly cutting back on carbs but not enough to make a difference. Besides, I drink a carb drink while I workout. The asthma is pretty much under control since I went back to my inhalor. I am guessing that the problem is overtraining. I am going away next week and I usually find a gym to go to even when I am away. This time I may just take a week off to recuperate. Another alternative is to cut back on sets. I will try to get through this week with my routine and then reassess.

~~John, sure sounds like low carb to me... Drinking a carb drink "while" w/o may not be getting into you fast enough. I'd carb up before you go to the gym.
I've had the same feeling and no, I wasn't getting sick...

Mighty fine lat pulls!!!

Hammer Iso Row
90/12; 200/12; 250/10; 270/8

Are these Isolation / DB's each side???

Just a thot... ;-))

Thanks Steve! I have been having no carb/high protein breakfasts. You may be right. Tomorrow I will see if my good old oatmeal and whey breakfast helps. Upon awakening, the body is in a low blood sugar state and the lack of carbs could be doing it. Thanks for the suggestion.

My strength has continued to go forward even as I feel weak. I have had to force myself mentally. Yesterday, I think if I did one more set they would have had to scrape me off the floor.

The Iso Rows are with a Hammer free weight machine. It is a sitting bi-lateral machine that is plate loaded. You sit with your chest on a pad and row with both hands individually or one at a time. Not unlike dumbbell rows but seated with back support and no lateral sway possible since the plane of movement is restricted by the machine. I feel it much more than DB rows.

Big John...

I experienced Ed-Zachary what you are describing and upped my carbs a tad just before training (a half hour or so), and that made a big diff for me....

RE: Iso, I wndered about that because the weight was phenominal for DBs... hehe

Today was a challenge on two fronts:

I had to combine my chest and back workouts due to the fact that I am travelling to Florida to visit my mother and sister (so after tonight, I will be offline for about a week). I am driving down so the gym is out for tomorrow. I have a travel pass for Gold's and will try to get a workout in between visits to relatives and maybe a friend.

I woke up with a stuffed nose and the beginnings of a sore throat. I had no energy and the workout was really difficult. However, with plenty of C and some zinc, I am already feeling better.

Chest

Hammer Incline

100/12; 190/9; 220/7; 230/3

Life Fitness Chest Press

150/12; 215/12; 230/9; 260/5

Cable Crossovers

60/12; 65/10; 75/5

Back

Lat Pulldowns - Front

120/12; 180/10; 195/6; 210/5

Close Grip Pulley Rows

165/12; 180/11; 195/9

See you in about a week.

Back from Florida! The weather was not as warm as usual but not bad in the upper 60's and lower 70's. I called AB while I was there near her home but we couldn't get together this time. However, she invited me to workout in her non-AC gym where it can reach 110 in the summer! Yeah, Lori. Like I told you, I will count your reps while sipping an iced tea (or sweet tea as they call it here in NC). Lori likes it when it is over 100 - anything under 90 and she is cold! I guess I still have NY blood in me and I feel comfortable at 70.

The Gold's Gym in Deltona is no more. It is now a YMCA and they graciously gave me a freebie workout.

I worked shoulders and arms.

1/27

Lateral Machine

4 sets but different weight since the machine was different than I normally use.

Press Machine

80/12; 100/12; 120/10; 130/8

Rear Delt Flyes

20/12; 25/10; 25/10; 25/9

Super Set:

Life Fitness Curling Machine

80/12; 100/9; 110/7

Life Fitness Tricep Extensions

80/12; 105/17; 125/12

Super Set:

One Arm Cable Curls

50/10; 60/6; 50/5

Cable Pressdowns

100/15; 130/11; 150/8

Ab Crunch Machine

3 sets

2/1

Chest and Back (back home in New Bern's Gold's)

Hammer Incline

100/12; 190/11; 220/6; 230/4

Life Fitness Chest Press

150/12; 215/12; 230/10; 260/5

Cable Crossovers - Lower

60/12; 65/11; 75/6

Lat Pulldowns - Front

120/12; 180/11; 195/6; 210/4

Hammer Iso Row

180/12; 230/11; 280/5

Close Grip Pulley Rows

skipped - out of gas

This is my sixth week with this routine. It may be time for a change next week. I feel like I am getting stale. Strength increases have been apparent and are continuing but it has been tough mentally and the trip to Florida didn't help. I had a problem on I-95 by running over a truck retread at 80 MPH which damaged my car and took an entire day to get it taken care of. Then I had some chores to do at my mom's house to help her out which also wore me out some. I will re-evaluate this weekend. Tomorrow - arms and shoulders.

Thanks Wicked! We'll get together in Florida one of these days!

Lori, I'll take you up on the forzen Daquiri. Sounds better than an iced tea (unless it's a Long Island Iced Tea!). It was great talking to you, as well. Next time I go down there, it will be without Rocky so maybe we can get together. Poor Rocky met so many dogs the last few weeks. I think he is done with all the socializing.

I had a real good workout today. I have not had much energy for my workouts the last couple of weeks. Stingo thought it might be lack of carbs prior to my workouts and he may have been right. Today I had farina for breakfast and had a strong workout. Almost every set was heavier or with more weight or both. My strength has been going up throughout this routine but some days it has been tough - physically and mentally. I will look into a new routine next week since this one has lasted 6 weeks and that is about when I need a change. Today -

Shoulders and Arms

Lateral Machine

60/12; 90/12; 100/10; 110/8

Press Machine

90/12; 110/11; 130/6

Rear Delt Flyes

20/12; 25/12; 25/12; 25/10

Super Set:

Life Fitness Curling Machine

80/12; 105/8; 115/6

Life Fitness Tricep Extensions

90/12; 120/12; 140/5

Super Set:

One Hand Cable Curls

50/12; 60/10; 60/9

Cable Pressdowns

100/15; 140/12; 160/8

Usual homemade brew during the workout and EAS protein drink (42 grms. protein) following the workout on the way home.

Thanks, CB! BTW, I was giving some thought to a vette after our discussion but when I brought up the subject, Marie said that she hated riding in the other ones and was not at all happy with any thoughts of another vette in the garage. I tired to tell her how much better the ride is now but it was no go. So a new vette will have to be only in my dreams.

Today I finally got some legs in. I have had some injuries to my knees and right hamstring due to some serious heavy leg work in the past. Those days are gone forever. Since I was about to drive for over 10 hours, I didn't want to revisit that hammy pain while I was driving. Been there, done that. So legs were out for awhile and now I will take it VERY light for awhile.

Legs/Abs

Life Fitness Leg Extensions

105/12; 135/12; 165/12; 195/12

Life Fitness Lying Leg Curls

60/12;70/12; 80/12; 90/12

Life Fitness Seated Leg Press

Hammer Seated Calf

Life Fitness Standing Calf

215/12; 255/10; 255/8

Surprise her and take her down to the car lot and get her to test drive one. Bet she changes her mind. Always has with mine. The local Dodge Dealer down the street from me just got in a 2005 Viper. Talk about muscular and aggressive lookin, oh man. V-10, 505 hp. Had a hard time sleepin thinkin about that monster. 69 degrees and sunny here, I'll definitely have the top down today.

Nah, CB, it will never work. She would never drive one - she won't even sit in it as a passenger. My first vette was kinf of scary - it was a '60 - red and white convertible but it was totally worked with a transplanted 327 rated at 405 HP. It had a I-beam suspension and sat up so high, you almost needed a step stool to get in. Needless to say, the ride was so rough that when you hit a bump, your fillings would come loose. I think that did it for Marie. My second vette was a black '79. I also had a suspension in it but not as severe. Still made for a nasty ride and with my lead foot, she only rode in it a couple of times and that was it. No, I don't think a vette is in my near future.

The Viper is an awesome auto. What a head turner.

No, the leg work is light for me. I was blessed with strong legs (wish my shoulders had that strength) but it might have been a curse. I used to do heavy squatting in my youth - 1/2 squats for 20 reps with 400 lbs.for multiple sets and only a couple of years ago, high rep leg presses with 900 pounds. Now the knees and my right hamstring get real cranky if I push it, so I have to take it easy.

New routine time! It's great to start a new routine. It gets the juices flowing and the soreness returns! Ahhhh . . .

I decided this weekend while working on planning my new routine to utilize pre-exhaust super-sets. Always great for bringing serious, deep pain in the muscle bellies. You gotta love it!

Due to the strenuousness of these super sets, it was necessary to cut back on the number of sets.

2/7

Chest

Pre-Exhaust Super Set

Dumbbell Flyes

40/12; 50/12; 55/8; 60/7

Incline Dumbbell Presses

50/12; 55/8; 60/5; 65/5

Cable Crossovers

50/14; 60/11; 65/8; 65/7; 70/5

Steve - serious boob soreness. I need a massage - oh, man!

Today - Back - 2/8

Pre-Exhaust Super Set

Pulley Pullovers

60/12; 80/12; 100/12; 120/12

Hey Judge - hope you get that massage!

Funny - a couple of weeks ago, I posted the Viper logo on one of Jan's threads -where she was trying to name her pet tire. I was suggesting she give it a turbocharged moniker along the lines of a muscle car or some such thing.....

Damn Steve! I do! :) I guess I'll need another volunteer.

Lisa, that Viper logo is so cool. I am another "snake person" since I have owned several over the years. I had to give away my Kenyan Sand Boa before I moved. I used to keep it in my office at school and the kids loved it when I visited their classrooms with Victor, the constrictor! The teachers were not always so thrilled to see me and Victor. I used to get letters and visits from kids who had grown up and one of the things they often remembered was my visits with Victor.

There was a 6th grade teacher at my grade school who had a snake in the classroom... I think Mr. Marshall used to bring in a mouse occasionally. About the time his students had given the mouse a name, it would disappear... Hmmm..... ;~)

LOL!! Yeah, Victor would swallow a mouse about once a month but I never did that if front of the kids. He liked his privacy when dining. See how you remembered that after all those years! Well, in your case, it wasn't so long ago (wink, wink).

Man, CB, I hardly ever get really sore anymore unless I have a layoff. This pre-exhaust routine is nailing me! My pecs are still sore and my back and traps are seriously sore today. I will probably go without NSAID's because, being the sick individual I am, I kind of like the pain unless it gets in the way of normal movement.

Whoever designed that emblem for Dodge knew what they were doing.

George,

We all have those days. The key is to let it happen and rebound tomorrow. This life ia a great wonder and each day is new and ready for us to make it what we want it to be. I hope you are feeling better and that tomorrow will find a smile upon your face.

CB,

Believe it or not, my pecs are still be bit "tight" today. Back also but not as much. Arms just feel tight but shoulders are sore. Woke up with sleeping on my right shoulder and it was sore! Slept 9 1/2 hours last night! I usually sleep 6 1/2 to 7, so I must have been burnt.

This is less sets and reps than I usually do, but pre-exhaust is wickedly good!

Sounds GREAT John!!!

I'm draggin tonight! 12 1/2 hour work day, just finished hauling 5 computer systems (110# each) across the street to our other campus where the mail room is, to ship out... Took me 5 trips with the hand truck, over curbs and through parking lots, 110# each load.... I'm pooped, the left knee is wobbley... Heading for the gym in 10 minutes... See what happens.... REport at 11.... I get to sleep in in the morning though (no alarm clock going off at 4:30am).
Need to put a starter on my 84 Honda tomorrow but I think it's supposed to rain... UGH!

Looking forward to you checking in later, Steve. Man, that sounds like a brutal day. You sure had a good "warm up" for your workout! I don't envy you tomorrow with car repairs on your plate. Been there, done that!

This is enviable. Enjoy! Working stiffdom ain't so bad, but being able to really rest "on demand" is an enticing concept.

2/14/05

Got to the gym today and when I opened my gym bag in the locker room - oh, nooo - I forgot my training journal. So I had to remember the exercises, weights, reps and sets. THe old gray cells are fading so I wasn't sure how I would do but looking back, not too badly. Some weights more, some less, not all the sets were the same. I believe that sometimes it is good to not use the journal and see if you are mentally limited by what you "think" you can do rather than what you actually can do.

Chest

Pre-Exhaust Super Set:

Flyes

30/12; 40/12; 50/12; 50/10

Dumbbell Inclines

45/12; 60/12; 65/8; 65/7

Cable Crossovers

50/12; 60/10; 70/10; 80/8; 80/7

Feeling some pretty serious tightness in the pecs tonight. Ahhhh . . . love the pain!

Steve,

Sometimes I don't use a journal and just go in to work a particular bodypart and just go for it. I have journals dating back many years. For years I wouldn't workout without one when I trained at home. I would start a new book each year. But once in a while it is good to break away and workout a few weeks without one.
