Hi Judge,

It doesn't sound like wining. I know how you mean but (I repeat) it doesn't come across like wining.
It is annoying when you want to get to gym and all of a sudden there appears a medical hindrance.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Hi Adam, thanks.

I incorrectly typed teres minor which is a small muscle that can't be exercised directly. It's the teres major, a small triangular muscle next to the lats that the row is hitting as well as the lats. I am not familiar with the youtube you are referring to. The row is basically like a regular seated cable row except that you concentrate on using the scapular to squeeze together to activate the teres.

LOL, thanks for the uplifting post, Pixie! Yes, it is annoying - well, no, more than annoying. It really pisses me off that I have to bail out of the gym when my body fails me. But I'm back now so all is good.

Vol, your physical troubles are much worse than mine and I am embarrassed to complain when you are in such pain. Please hang in there, my friend. Doctors told me years ago that my spinal discs were all dried up and only pain was in my future. Chiropractor treatments, working out with my back always in my mind, stretching, anti-inflammatories all have brought me back. One orthopedic surgeon wanted to do surgery. I am so glad I refused. Yes, my back hurts all the time but nothing like what you are dealing with. Sending you healing thoughts.

Today's workout

Legs

Since my breathing is still a bit difficult and coughing is my companion, I cut back on my sets from 6 to 4 and kept the weights at the same level as last time.

Leg Extensions - 4 sets/12-18 reps

Seated Leg Curls - 4 sets/12-20 reps

Life Fitness Glute Machine - 3 sets/12-15 reps - only got 3 sets in.

Calf Raises on Leg Press Machine - 4 sets/18-25 reps

Less sets but the same weight and basically in the same rep range. I took more time between sets and exercises to give my breathing a chance to catch up. Looking forward to resting tomorrow.

My back is currently ok, daily stretching and a complete break from squatting and DL’s has helped. I won’t be doing either movement with any real weight again. Game over. Your man Brignole will guide me now. Reading his book again and I can apply a lot of it to whatever I do going forward.

Spencer,

I have not squatted for years and have not done a barbell bench press in many decades. My shoulders were wrecked doing bench presses and I had bone and ligament removal from both shoulders due to heavy benching. My back was first injured doing 400 lb. squats. Both are not good exercises for the legs and chest anyway. Since I am not a powerlifter, I only did them for muscular development and realized on my own that there were much better exercises anyway. Now, Brignole confirms what I realized decades ago.

You're on the way back, Spencer. Just go slowly and carefully, and keep your back in mind at all times.

Why are you squatting in the curl rack?

Yes, Al, I had impingement syndrome on both shoulders. My muscles beneath the acromion process got too large for the area and began rubbing against the acromion bone. They had to remove the bone and ligaments and shave the frayed areas of the rotator cuff muscles in my left shoulder. A couple of years later, the same thing happened to my right shoulder. The orthopedist said that bench presses and overdevelopment of my anterior deltoids and lack of equal development of my posterior delts caused my shoulder girdles to push forward. Therefore, I seldom do anything for anterior delts and work rear delts regularly.

Yesterday's workout

Chest

Cable Crossovers - 8 sets/10-20 reps - increased the weight on all sets

Back

Lat Machine Pulldowns with neutral grip bar - 8 sets/12-18reps - increased the weight on all sets

Machine Shrugs - 5 sets/250 lbs./15 reps - increased the weight over the last workout

I added weight all through the workout. Today (the day after) I can really feel my pecs and traps and my lats are REALLY feeling DOMS.

Tomorrow - shoulders and arms

Solid work, Judgey!!!

The progress on the pullup bar has been slow for me, and a little drab. (your use of the neutral grip bar brought this to mind) Just playing around I grabbed the bar overhead the same way you grab a bat. Wow, a totally different source of power for the movement and I feel like I woke up some different groups of muscles that might end up dragging me along closer to real pullup.

Cheers to pulling ourselves along!

Diablo, one thing you might try for increasing your ability to do pullups is to utilize negatives. I have instructed several people (two women who were unable to do one pullup) to use negatives and every one of them improved - some doing their first pullup ever. Negatives build strength rather than muscle size. If you don't have access to an assisted pullup machine, you can use a chair or a stool to get into position.

Friday's workout

Shoulders

DB Laterals - 6 sets/12-15 reps - increased the weight on every set

Bent-Over Rear Delt Barbell Raises - 3 sets/20-25 reps - increased the reps on every set but I had to stop at 3 sets because my damn abs cramped.

Biceps

Hammer Curl Machine - 6 sets/12-20 reps - increased weight on every set - I did occlusion training on this exercise

Triceps

Cable Pushdowns - 6 sets/12-30 reps - increased the weight on every set - also occlusion used here.

Today's workout

Legs

Leg Extensions - 6 sets/16-22 reps - increased the reps on all sets and went back to 6 sets

Seated Leg Curls - 6 sets/15-22 reps - increased the reps on all sets and went back to 6 sets

Life Fitness Glute Machine - 3 sets/15-20 reps - only got 3 sets in.

Calf Raises on Leg Press Machine - 6 sets/18-25 reps - increased the weight on all sets and went back to 6 sets

Got all my sets in and either increased reps or weight over the last workout. With my abs cramping so often, I decided to skip abs today.

Today's workout

Yesterday, I had my second vaccine shot. We had heard that side effects were more prevalent after the second shot. Well, I had no problem. My injection site didn't hurt, I didn't feel any different than usual but it did affect me in the gym today. I had to really push hard to make my rep goals but, I was proud, that I did. I had a great workout. My wife did suffer some side effects. She had insomnia last night, pain at the injection site, and was extremely fatigued today. Hopefully, she'll be better tomorrow.

Chest

Cable Crossovers - 8 sets/11-25 reps - increased the reps on all sets

Back

Lat Machine Pulldowns with neutral grip bar - 8 sets/14-20 reps - increased the reps on all sets

Machine Shrugs - 5 sets/270 lbs./15 reps - increased the weight over the last workout

As I said, I was proud of myself today. As hard as I always workout, this was particularly difficult but I made my goals.

Lots of good stuff! I had my second on the 18th, no effects, less than the initial in fact. But! I did get covid arm. It's gone, less than a week and it didn't set in until the second day after the shot.

Way to push through, champ! Well wishes for your better half!

Today's workout

Shoulders

DB Laterals - 6 sets/13-16 reps - increased the reps on every set

Bent-Over Rear Delt Barbell Raises - 4 sets/20-25 reps - I was able to do 4 sets before my abs were about to cramp. I could feel them going so I quit at 4 sets which is one more than the last workout.

Biceps

Hammer Curl Machine - 6 sets/10-20 reps - increased weight on every set - I did occlusion training on this exercise. The pump is major with occlusion but it hurts - more than usual - lol!

Triceps

Cable Pushdowns - 6 sets/10=26 reps - increased the weight on every set - also occlusion used here.

I again used every bit of energy I had. My asthma was troublesome today but I just kept deep breathing between sets and kept going.

I am looking forward to a weekend of rest.

My workout today was the opposite of Monday's. On Monday I felt energized and strong. Today, I was dragging. It was a real struggle. My hand/wrist pain didn't help.

Chest

Cable Crossovers - 8 sets/12-26 reps - increased the reps on most sets

Back

Lat Machine Pulldowns with neutral grip bar - 8 sets/12-15 reps - increased the weight on all sets

Machine Shrugs - 3 sets/290 lbs./15 reps - increased the weight over the last workout but had nothing left in the tank after 3 sets.

Chiropractor tomorrow and a day of rest.

Friday's workout

Shoulders

DB Laterals - 6 sets/14-18 reps - increased the reps on every set

Bent-Over Rear Delt Barbell Raises - 3 sets/20-26 reps - Back to 3 sets as my abs were ready to cramp. I am not sure why this affects my abs so much but it's a regular problem.

Biceps

Hammer Curl Machine - 6 sets/8-20 reps - increased weight on every set - I did occlusion training on this exercise. Veins were popping.

Triceps

Cable Pushdowns - 6 sets/12-25 reps - increased the weight on every set - also occlusion used here.

Workout was excellent. Shoulders really showing excellent separation and my arms had a great pump with the occlusion training. However, I am mentally dragging and it's time to take a week off. I would make next week my week off but it is looking like I have to take a ride up to the lake the following week to get my boat out of storage so I may need to postpone my week off until the following week.

Due to several factors, I decided to take this week off from training. I had been dragging the last week or two and my pain has increased to the point that my training was hindered more than usual. Also, the weather is great this week and I need to go up to the lake to get my boat out of storage so it's a perfect time to take care of that chore. I have my annual physical on Thursday morning so we'll head up to the lake on Thursday afternoon and, hopefully, move the boat on Friday.

Good training everyone!

Have fun, John. I have my annual physical this week, too. Going to talk to doc about my tweaks and ask him about long term use of anti-inflammatories.

My blood and urine tests showed a high level of creatinine as always. He is concerned about kidney disease but I tried explaining to him last year that hard training causes much more creatinine to be released into the kidneys and they don't remove it all. Also, I discovered that my ACE inhibitor blood pressure med has a side effect of more creatinine. Now, he wants me to drink more water (I already drink a lot) and come back in two weeks for another round of tests. I plan on calling tomorrow to see if I can stop the BP med or change it temporarily to see if that changes the levels.

As far as my training, I will work on a new routine today and begin tomorrow (Monday).

Today's workout

Legs

Leg Extensions - 5 sets/12-18 reps

Seated Leg Curls - 5 sets/10-15 reps

Nautilus Glute Drive Machine - 3 sets/10 reps - this is a new exercise for me so I only did 3 sets to see what the result would be.

Calf Raises on Seated Leg Press Machine - 5 sets/15-25 reps

Even though this is a new routine, other than the Glute Drive Machine, it's the same as usual with legs. Doug Brignole has these listed as the best quad and hamstring exercises, so I am staying with them.

I am also adding some exercises for my hip flexors. It's something new and I am hoping to relieve some of my pain from tight hip flexors. These I am doing at home for now since they do not involve any weight equipment.

Today's workout

Chest

Decline DB Presses - 5 sets/15-20 reps

Gironda Assisted Chest Dips - 5 sets/12-15 reps

Back

Brignole Lat Pull-ins - 5 sets/15-20 reps

Close Grip Cable Rows - 5 sets/18-20 reps

Shrugs on Squat/Lunge Machine - 300 lbs. 3 sets/8-12 reps

I worked damn hard today. Great workout but my lower back is really hurting tonight. I am using my TENS unit right now, hoping I'll be able to sleep later. But tomorrow is a day of rest and I'll be ready to hit the gym again on Friday.

We are under a serious weather warning for tomorrow afternoon - tornadoes, hail, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and wind. So tomorrow afternoon until night will be time to batten down the hatches and hope for the best.

Good luck, Al! We put away yard items and went food shopping earlier. Unfortunately, my standby generator needs a tuneup and isn't functioning so if the electricity goes out, we are in the dark. As long as no tornadoes hit, we'll be okay. Let me know how you and Judy make out.

Al, I hope you and Judy had no problems with the storm. It missed us, thankfully. Rain and some wind but nothing terrible here.

Friday's workout

Shoulders and Arms

Bent-Over Rear Delt Raises - 5 sets/15-20 reps

Biceps

DB Spider Curls - 14-20 reps

This was an excellent workout. I pushed hard and got great pumps. I loved watching my veins while doing the curls. Yes, it was hard but such fun!
