In May 1968 I came to San Diego with the Navy and joined the Seven Seas Gym, a downtown "locker club gym." Back in those days, sailors couldn't keep civies on ship, so we all had little lockers at these downtown locker clubs. they were all pretty seedy places. Often when you were out to sea, you'd come back and all your stuff would be gone. Gene Dickerson ran the gym and warned us about keeping anything of value in those lockers. I think he was a Mr. San Diego, and that's where I met Mike McDonald. He was a corpsman at Balboa Hospital. We went to a PL meet at San Diego State that year and the guys from Zuver's were all there, along with Tom Overholtzer. I recall Mike was giving his openers to one of the officials, it was probably over 400 lbs., and the guy didn't believe he could do that. Mike ended up doing around 430 that day as a 198. The rest is history. I haven't heard anything about him in a long time. Hope he's doing okay.jk

I remember Bud Mucci coming down to San Diego for a PL meet in the early 70s with the Olympic Health Club team. A couple of the lifters from the LA area were Jim Vetrovec and Chuck Boornazian. I think Bud Ravenscroft and Al Hart were in that meet too. Bud was working to clean up the suport gear issues back then...everyone was wearing these canvas shorts that laced up in the front, and he was going nuts....wanted to DQ everyone. He was a strict and fair judge.

We had an old school one here in the early 90's.

Just a Dungeon with lot's of black iron.

No Richard Simmons "sweatin to the oldies" in that place.

Unfortunately it went out of business after a couple of years.

There's a body shop there now.

Pumping Iron was in Campbell, a joint venture of Lee Evans and another guy. Lee was a long time friend from Sunnyvale High School. The gym didn't last all that long but was well equipped.

Iron Works started originally on Bascom Ave just west of W. San Carlos, a great gym full of home made equipment. It was a family owned gym, a kind of 'mom and pop' - mom running the place during the days. In a rented facility with parking far too limited for the success they quickly enjoyed, they then built the facility on Winchester Blvd in Campbell. It wasn't Scott Wilson but Stanford anesthesiologist Dr. Scott Connelly who purchased it. He experimented with nutrient formulae emphasizing anabolism for application in both sports as well as pre- and post-surgical anabolism with many of the members. That eventually became his original MetRx. Last time I worked out at the Bascom facility was mid 1980. By 81 I'd moved to the Campbell/Los Gatos/San Jose border near Good Sam hospital, moving training back to the now defunct Anastasia's on Winchester in Campbell. I'd occasionally get a day pass at Iron Works, a very crowded, very busy gym. Power lifters and shot putters doing close grip bench press for sets of up to six reps with 455 or more. Several platforms. Richard Marks doing roman chair sit ups with a 50 lb plate behind his head. The first era of men and women doing serious training together. Marks' girl friend costarred in the movie Personal Best.

From the mid 80s we moved to near Valley Fair. Thanks to Goodwill and a low cost equipment store off Wolfe Road in Sunnyvale, I shifted to home gym training. It's been that way ever since.

I think I trained there once or twice when I was still in high school.

Pumping Iron Gym in Campbell, CA was the first gym I went to that actually had bodybuilders. I was still in high school and had to drive a long way. I was glad I never renewed my membership, I believe they just closed the door one day.

Iron Works Gym in Cambell, CA was the place to be in the early 80's in the bar area. The winner of the Mr. Teenage America Contest came from the gym, admittedly that had to be the strangest gym to train at times.

Richard Sanchez

<blo ckquote>Quote:&l t;/font>

Bi ll Keyes said:
The Central YMCA in San Jose, CA had a dynamite little weight room in the late 60's/early 70's. I use the word 'little' somewhat facetiously. Square footage wasn't much, maybe 750 sq ft, but lots of powerhouse lifters/athletes. Bob Kemper, Richard Marks, Blair Kephart, Ray Leso, John Powell, Al Fuerbach among the most notable. All benches, racks, appartus, etc. made by the lifters themselves most of whom were firemen and policemen. York was the 'brand of choice' for barbells both Olympic and standard.

The weight room was stuck in a box like room across the hall from the indoor swimming pool and next to the basketball gym. Lots of chlorine odor. Cinder block walls with the only ventilation being open louvres at the top of the wall. Chalk dust everywhere especially on the lifting platform. At the top of one wall was a blackboard with the best competitive lifts in all classes of powerlifts and Oly lifts. It was that high so it could only be reached with a ladder and no one could screw around with it placing bogus numbers.

Remains one of my favorite training venues to this day.

& lt;font class="post">

I grew big at PowerUnlimited, they had an awesome T-shirt that I was proud to wear. I and am from Santa Cruz, CA. Power Unlimited for me. Great place, everything in order and lots of gym etiquette in a way that is hard to find or nonexistent anymore. I remember when Dave started showing up at the 17th Ave location, or more likely he was always there, and just new to me and my teammates. I was still a kid, 16, or 17 working out with my football teammates, mid '80's. It is from that time that my memory goes when reading his articles, we were all in awe of the intense workouts he was doing, it was obvious he did not want to bothered. I remember getting a few helpful bench spots from Dave, and a few nods that seemed to say I was on the right track as he went about his business. The good ol' days.

Power Unlimited was a great place, wonderful people and camaraderie. I was there from '84 thru the second location in Watsonville and move to Harvey West. We bought Ron and Lynn out in '89 and built the World Gym in that location about the time of the earthquake. 17th Ave PU will always be a special memory for me.

A couple of the guys you may remember who trained together, Bryan and Evan, still train together at what's now the Weight Room...30 years later!

Did Iron Works become Gold's? Description of location sounds like where Gold's San Jose was located. Gold' San Jose somewhere around San Carlos/ Bascom, been years since I have been there.

They would probably look familiar if I saw them, but don't remember them. I worked in Watsonville a while, and was in that location often also. Harvey West location also. Santa Cruz County is my old stomping grounds. Ron Morris is a good guy, he had a welding shop at 17th av, and made a lot of the equipment himself. I heard about health problems, but lost contacts over the years, I hope he is well?. I remember write ups in the local paper about him and the other strongman that ran Santa Cruz Health Club at 17th/Brommer. I dont remember the weight, but the pictures showed them doing dumbell bench presses, fly's with an impressive amount.

One of the great losses in this modern era of training, is that each gym in the 1960s, had its own, very distinct and very specific personality.

This can still be so, however many gym managers try to bland everything out. I'm employed by a gym that's not yet opened, on one side of the gym they have four power racks, rings and straps hanging down from a bridge, bands and ropes and kettlebells, bumper plates. On the other side of the gym... treadmills with tv, internet and games on them. Who are they trying to appeal to? I asked. "Everyone!" they replied.

I used to workout at IronWorks on winchester blvd. i was 16-17 yrs old till my spinal injury. i was training for mr teenage san jose. i trained with kevin winter and tim talogin. i ended up in a wheelchair and been in one since breaking my neck during a boating accident in 1982. i remember big lou at the front desk. they had alot of free weights. anybody remember me? do you guys have pictures of the old ironwork gym? my email is rfutia@hotmail.com

I remember the Talogins...Same high school. The older brother was an animal but the younger one was a bit of a dandy.

My favorite had to be the original Golds in downtown SJ. Cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and always stank. Wilson was behind the counter back then...'84 or so. Lots of inspiration from the animals until the law caught on to their shenanigans, most did federal time but one guy, Eric, wound up on the wrong end of a 12Ga for snitching. They caught up with him in Hawaii.

Golds moved to meridian ave around '90 and it was never the same. A/C, no windows and ample parking :\

Have any of you ever been to Doug's Gym in Dallas, TX? It's been in continuous operation since 1962 under the ownership of Doug Eidd.

I was hoping to take a trip to the area in the next couple years and drop by. Unfortunately, Doug's is closing down for good tomorrow, after 56 years in business!

I posted a blurb on my new blog about it...

In two days I will be lifting at the weight pen at Venice Beach!

It's had renovations over the years, but I think it still qualifies for this thread since it's been there in some form or other since the 1950s.

My first Gym was in mid 60's Manchester UK, an old factory built during the Industrial Revolution, most benches was 2X4's.

Mid 80's Vancouver Canada, an old furniture store/warehouse, very old building with old equipment and weights.

Miss them kind of places, nowadays it's your shop front mini gyms with a personal trainer. Also a Gym franchise in what was a supermarket or department store, with 50 treadmills, stationary bikes and a circuit workout area, like your Planet Fitness.

Old Gyms I Have Known

I will always, remember fondly, the YMCA free weight room at the YMCA in Elmhurst, Illinois, in the early 80's. Two benches I think, a squat rack, and a flat bench. All the weights one needed. I would go with a friend, and usually there were the same two guys (friends) who would workout when we did. The equipment was set up in the basement next to the heating unit, so "warming up" was never an issue.

In the mid-80's I moved back home. I set up a bench and squat rack in the family barn. I usually did bench, standing overhead press, curls, squats and dead lift. Those Sacramento Valley temps would hit 105-110 in the summer. Again, warming up was never an issue. I would spend all day driving a forklift. On the way home I would drink two Mountain Dew to rev up, and then go workout.

The gym that I initially worked out in when I first started lifting at age 15, was basically a "hole in the wall," with all of the equipment welded together by the owner whom was a welder by trade. Some of the kids from my school lifted there also, but it was mainly a couple handfuls of adults and teens.
It had like 3 flat benches, dumbbell rack, 1 incline bench, leg press, squat rack, power rack, dipping/pullup stand, leg extension/curl, preacher curl, bent row stand, pulldown, straight/curl bars and plenty of weights. Those were the days!

It was nice of the owner letting me try the private gym for 3 weeks free.
I checked out the cost now but out of my budget, cost went up. The place I go now is about the same distance to walk.

I go to the Boy's & Girl's Club which has senior programs when kidz are in school. They have a weight room and at 7:30am it's all mine. I mainly use the Smith machine (no squat rack), bench with Oly bar and plate, old style dumbbells.

Back around 1977-78 I trained at P & D's House of Iron, in Wakefield, RI. The reason I'm mentioning it is because it was run by Peter and David Paul, of Barbarian Brothers fame. They were just out of school at the time (Iowa?), had been wrestlers and looked it. Very lean and athletic looking, a far cry from what they eventually became! It was a typical bodybuilding gym of the time with lots of well-made equipment, mostly from Ed Jubinville, who was a muscle control specialist, BB judge and promoter and all around good guy.

We took our twins to Canada for high school graduation. Our eldest tagged along and off we went.

We made it to the "resort". And started looking around. I use " " because the resort in the brochures and the resort we stayed at were a world apart. But the girls did not care so it was all good.

They had a gym. Part of it was a line of treadmills. Another part of it was Universal single station weight machines. Not the multi station equipment you think of.

The place was odiferous. Stunningly offensive to the nose.

But I put two or three workouts in. It took me back to... High school. I had a chance once to buy a multi station, but I did not. I regret that a bit!
