Nice training Bruce and Jason!
You'll be missed at the bash...

Thanks Steve. Looks like no one will go hungry at the bash!
After a brief warm up on the bike and tread mill
we started with Squats.
50 x 10
105 x 10
150 x 10
200 x 10 for 2 sets

incline bench presses using the hooks to take the weights off from the oly bar. This is a whole lot easier on my shoulders than cleaning the weight in place.

35 x10 for 2 sets
50 x 5
65 x5 for 5 sets
I did a lot of dripping inbetween sets as it was a brutal 76 in the garage!

Next we did one arm cable rows for the lats.
60 x 10
80 x 10
100 x 10
120 x 10 for 2 sets

I was still a little tired from mondays workout, but wanted to get a little bicep work in.
Straight bar curls with oly bar
40 x 10
65 x 5
85 x 5 for 4 sets

The workout took about an hour total and went pretty good. Took some ageless growth and I think it helped a little.

That's it off to the shower for me.

TGIF
Friday's workout is always a balancing act. If I workout too hard I am tired for the first half of Saturday and don't get much done in the morning.
If I go to easy then what's the point?

Got a little late start, but did our warm up then:
Squats
55 x 10
105 x 10
150 x 10
Light tonight cause it's the 3rd time this week.
Don't want to over do one area.
We do three different chest workouts during the week. Cable crossovers on Monday, Inclines on Wednesday, and flats on Friday. Each hits the chest a little differently.
Next we did flat bench presses tonight
40 x 20
95 x 15
135 x 5 for two sets
185 x 5 for 5 sets for Jason and I did 8 on the last set/

Next wee did lateral raises
5 x 15
10 x 15
15 x 15 for 4 sets

Neutral pull downs
75 x 15
95 x 10
115 x 10
135 x 10 2 sets.

Ran in checked the oven and dinner was ready so the work out was over. I was off by about 10 minutes in my timing tonight.

More brilliant logging to come.

Bruce

With regard to Monday's workout: If you can deadlift 315x5x4, I'll be you're real close if not already capable of 400 (or more).

Thanks Al!
I intend to make hast slowly. With the hip replacement looking good, it's just a matter of adding a little weight and a few sets to ramp up to the 400 number. Just want to make sure I can do it with no injuries.

Laree,
It was around the time I registered for the web site. I was home with plenty of time on my hands.

I wanted to be sure things were well set before I started pulling and squating to hard. I go almost to parallel on my squats, but want to be sure that I don't go past 90 degrees at the hip so I don't mess up the joint.

I hope your are both doing well and say hello to Dave for me.

Ah! I thought you meant you'd just had it or were getting ready to, maybe mentioned it in another thread while I was out of town. Gotcha. Sounds like the surgery was a success!

Dave will be happy to join you in the post-surgery group (back not hip)... hopefully soon. He's been making his way toward this since Alaska over two years ago, remember?

I remember you guys in Alaska. I was a little concerned for Dave cause he was ducking things that would normally be easy for most people. Like the easy nature walk we took. When He was asking Linda about Oxygen bottles on the plane ride home I thought it might have something to do with his congestive heart failure history. The only reason I made the connection besides knowing his past history was that my dad had congestive heart failure and I knew what the symptoms are. I didn't want to ask questions because I thought it might be something he didn't want to discuss with some one he hardly knew.

I wish you both great success in his upcoming surgery. You are both great people and I was privileged to have been able to meet you both.

Yes, the back problem was a couple months old by then, and his symptoms at the time were when he walked more than a couple of blocks he'd get stinging legs and have to stop. The oxygen question was his brilliant idea to see if he could train harder with his congestive heart failure if he had a dose of oxygen between sets. What a goofball, to coin a favorite Dan Martin phrase.

We find out the surgery schedule next week. If all goes according to plan, the relief on the nerves is immediate. Thanks, Bruce.

Yes Al get all the medical news right here at old guys central!
Today is Monday and the workout is deadlift emphasis.
Warm up for 6 minutes on bike and treadmill.
Squats with top squat attachment.
55 x 19
105 x 10
It's a warm up for deads.
Deadlifts next.
135 x 5
225 x5 for 5 sets
Just enough time between sets to switch back and forth. Today is a light deadlift workout.
Flat bench press next
40 x 20
95 x 15
135 x 5 for 2 sets
185 x 5
185 x 5 for Jason 205 x 5 for me.
185 x 4 for Jason 225 x 2.5 for me. A little help from Jason on my last rep with 225.
185 x 7 for Jason and 10 for me.
At the beginning of benches we do light lateral rasies with 5 lbs dbs for 10-20 reps between the warm up sets on the bench.

Lateral raises
10 x 15
15 x 15 for three sets.

cable rows
60 x 10
80 x 10
100 x 10
120 x 10 for 2 sets. Only enough time to change weight. on 120 15 seconds rest.
curls
40 x 10
65 x 5
85 x5 for 3 sets.

Workout went pretty good. The benches didn't bother my shoulders at all. Need to use more weight so I can get my numbers up...with good form of course.
total time 75 minutes.

P.S.
Forgot to mention that jason and I had to do one set of load and unload of one of our 440 mopar engine blocks into the van and then unload at my house. these should be a strong man lift. they weight about 240 and are awkward to lift.

Monday’s workout got cancelled due to achy back and brain storming on the main chassis rails for the race car.
Tuesday got messed up due to a dentist appointment for Jason. I came home and mowed the lawn, emptied the dish washer, feed the dogs, folded all the laundry and started more. Made out some bills and generally ran around like a maniac for two hours to get every thing done so when Linda came home we wouldn't have any thing to do except eat dinner and watch a little TV until bed time. So I guess Tuesday was an odd lift and General Physical fitness day with all the running and lifting of odd weights of laundry.
Today looks like more of the same. Oh well, got to make sure everything is neat and clean.

Linda has to often stay late at her job, so it would be unfair of me to expect her to come home and do a bunch of house work, etc when I have been home for a few hours.

Let’s see how Thursday goes....

Kind of like a jungle gym. Actually it's a view of the inside of the plymouths frame work and roll cage. It's on the other side of the 'normal' workout area for humans. This side is where we build the MUSCLE CARS!!

We put the tires on the car over the week end and lowered it down to what will be the 'normal' ride height for the car. Really really really low. We have a 2x4 on each side under the front of the rocker panels, so it's 3.5 inches off the floor there and 5.5 inches off the floor at the rear cross member which is a little in front of the rear wheels.

I'll post some more pictures when I get a chance to further confuse the issue.

Today's workout was dead lift centric.
We warmed up with the bike and tread mill for 6 minutes.

Squats for a warm up
50 x 10
105 x 10

Dead lift
135 x 5
225 x 5
275 x5
315 x 5
325 x 5 Hey! that felt kind of heavy!!! Jason, want to do another set at 315? NO. OK lets move on...carefully.

Pull downs with neutral grip
75 x 15
95 x 15
115 x 15
That helped get me back to my full height again. Those deads are a tough.

Flat Bench press
40 x 20
96 x 15
135 x 5 2 sets
155 x15

OK, now I'm sweating so I think that's enough for today.
Besides I'm a little tired from the dead lifts.

David,
My son Jason does the metal fabrication on the car. I buy the materials. He is an expert welder and does it for a living. He is a lead in a company that makes hatches, windows and doors for boats and ferries. Pretty exacting work, so his attention to detail and getting everything just right is always there.

I am more of an engine, body & paint, with enough electrical knowledge not to be dangerous guy. We are finishing up a new engine for his 1970 Plum Crazy Purple Challenger. It's 508 cu in and about 650 hp.

We have been training on and off for the past 20 years. There have been some breaks in there, but we are doing it pretty steadily for the last couple years.

I saw a picture of you and another fellow in the photo gallery. You look fantastic.

Thanks for stopping by and stay safe were ever Uncle Sam sends you.

My back felt fine today. It’s actually a little sore from doing one arm cable rows tonight.
Today’s workout:
I decided to do hack squats instead of regular squats as a change from regular squats.
So we started with 45lbs plus 35 for the carriage.
Oh my god was that hard. I felt all the work on the muscles at the top of my knee area. It seems to be a weak spot so I will be working it until it catches up. Doing regular squats I go to about parallel, but it doesn’t get the muscles around the knee area very well.
So we did
80 x 10 for 4 sets.
My legs will probably be sore in that area for a day or so.
That’s fine, I learned something in today’s workout.

Next we did flat bench press’
40 x 20
95 x15
135 x 5 2 sets
185 x 5
185 x 8 2 sets for Jason
185 x 10 2 sets for me.

One arm cable row.
60 x 10
100 x10
120 x10 for 3 sets

Lateral raises
10 x 15
15 x 15 for three sets

Curls
65 x 10 2 sets

It was 80 degrees in the garage tonight and we were sweating our a es off. At least it kept my joints warm and less painful.

I'll be including the hack's for quite a while. They address a definate weakness in my training armour. I moved a bunch of stuff out of the way so I could actually use the machine.

I was getting some protests from this guy about not using enough machines.

Monday’s workout
6 minute warm up on bike and treadmill
Light squats to help warm up for dead lifts
55 x 10
110 x 10

We use the top squat attachment for squats. Jason doesn’t need it, but he defers to my aching shoulders.

Dead lifts
135 x 5
225 x 5
275 x 5
315 x5 for 3 sets
Jason wanted to go a little heavier so we loaded the bar with 365 and he did one easy rep with it. Made it look like 135 going up.

Next we did incline db bench press
35 x 10
35 x5
50 x 5
65 x5 for 3 sets
Could have done a couple more sets but the shoulders were a little creaky tonight. All reps were done slowly to maximize the effect of each rep.

Neutral lat pulldowns
75 x 15
95 x15
115 x 15

That was enough for tonight. Deads make my arms longer and me shorter so I stop a little early to make sure I can move tomorrow.

took ageless growth again so I felt pretty good when I was done.

Going to try posting workouts again for a while.

Still working out in the garage where there is no waiting and everyone is nice to each other. Can't beat it for economy of time and getting in what you want to do quickly. also, no worries about infections from others, or some meat head trying to sign me up for training who doesn't know crap about it.

Monday's workout: Legs, chest, triceps
Squats
55 x 10
105 x 10
150 x 10
200 x 10
220 x 10
220 x 10 for Jason
Didn't want to do an extra set yet.

Bench Press flat.
40 x 20
95 x 15 2 sets
135 x 5 2 sets
185 x 5
185 x 2 for Jason shoulder was hurting a little
185 x 5 for Jason. He called it quits as he didn't want to temp fate.
185 x 15 for me. Pushed a bit to get some reps and actually got a pretty good pump.

Press downs with stealth bomber
60 x 15
80 x 15
100 x 15
120 x 15
130 x 40 for Jason
130 x 25 for me

that was it for the night. Pretty good workout for us.

115 x 15
135 x 15 for 2 burning sets

One arm Cable Rows
80 x 10
100 x 10

DB Curls

Now the hard part…put everything back in it’s place so Linda can park her car in the center bay of the garage.
Good workout added deads , 2 more sets on laterals and 1 more sets of db curls.
Took about 45 minutes cause we don’t rest long.

Wed. Workout 2/18/09
Back, shoulders, and biceps
Dead lift
135 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 5
275 x 5
275 x 5
Went up 25 lbs for the last 2 sets and will add one more set of 275 next week.

Neutral Pull downs
75 x15
95 x 15
115 x 15
135 x 15
135 x 15 Same as last time.

One arm cable rows
80 x 10
100 x 10
120 x 10
120 x 10 added one more set this week

Lateral raises
5, 10, 15 x 15
20 x 15 for 5 sets

Biceps
DB curls
20 x 5
45 x 5 3 sets 45’s are pretty hard for me to do the way I like, but I am going to keep working on them
35 x 8 2 sets done slow to get a little more work in the Biceps.
Biceps felt a little more tired tonight. It might be the extra weight on the deads and extra set of cable rows. Just have to keep after it and get more endurance in my system. It’s a little more when I feel I can handle it. Jason is having no problem with the weights here, just some pain in his wrist from something work related I guess.

That’s it for tonight.

Thanks Steve!

Can't afford the trip to Utah this year. Too many other hands in my pocket.

Jason and his girl friend are having a baby in June, and we are buying a crib (expensive) and who knows what else for them. We always go over board but they are worth it.

So I was a little worried about this workout since my right shoulder was killing me from Monday’s workout. I don’t know why since we have done the same routine for quite a while. I had just added one set of dead lifts to the routine. It was a pretty long workout for us though and even Jason was a little sore. I guess there is a lot of work on the shoulder joint area with deads, pulldowns, one arm cable rows and laterals. I will have to see if this happens again next week and then make some adjustments to the exercises.

Wednesday workout:
Legs, chest, triceps
Squats with top Squat attachment
55 x10
105 x 10
150 x 10
200 x 10
220 x 10
Chest
Flat Bench Press
40 x20
95 x 15
135 x 5 2 sets
185 x 5
185 x 5
Cable crossovers
35 x 10 3 sets
Wanted a little more chest work while being careful of the shoulder joints.

Triceps press downs with stealth bomber of course
60 x 15
80 x 15
100 x 15
120 x 15

Made it through the workout ok just a little pain with the last set of press downs.
Overall my shoulders felt better than when I started, so all the heat and movement probably helped.

Friday’s workout:
Took it a little easier tonight. Jason gave blood yesterday and was feeling a little tired and weak.
Me? I was a bit tired and sore from the two past workouts.

Neutral Pull downs
75 x 15
95 x 15
115 x 15
135 x 15

One arm cable row
80 x 10
100 x 10
120 x 10
120 x 10

Shoulders
Lateral raises
5, 10, 15 x 15 three sets at 15 lbs.
Wasn’t sure if this was causing me shoulder pain

Db curls
35 x 8 3 sets

I found that the curls were what was bothering my shoulder so I will be doing either concentration curls, Scott curls or some other curl that takes the pressure off my upper bicep tendon until it feels better.

Easier workout tonight, but we will be hitting it harder on Monday.

Saturday and Sunday workout:
Jason and I worked on the chassis table build up over the weekend. This is a real odd lift workout and everything is heavy and awkward.

Each 3 x 4” x 16’ length of quarter inch thick tubing (rails) weights over 168lbs. Feels like a lot more. Each leg (there are 5 for each rail) weights about 12+ lbs. So that makes each assembly around 228 lbs.

Jason attached each leg and squared it to the rail, clamped it and tack welded it on 2 side. He did a total of 20 legs like this.

We worked 2 rails at a time. Jason tacked the legs on and then we had to drill through 2 holes on each side of the leg with a 13/32 drill. So that is a total of 80 holes to drill. Jason did about 10 on Saturday and I did the rest. It took about 3 and a quarter hours to do this. I was getting pretty tired by the last few cause drilling through quarter inch steel with a big drill bit is tough work. When I had about 4 holes to go I changed the drill bit to see if that would make it any easier. Hmmm….wish I did that about 20 holes ago. The first drill bit already did about 76 holes 40 through half inch stock and got dull. I thought I was just getting tired. After changing the bit the last 4 holes went much faster. I bought a new drill motor and wasn’t sure how strong it would be. I found out its way way stronger than me. It wasn’t even working hard with me leaning on it with a good percentage of my weight.

When I got done Saturday I felt like I had been beaten with a large stick. After taking a shower I sat semi-comatose in my recliner staring glassy eyed at the T.V. for an hour.

Sunday we set the first two rails on two dollies’s and taped them together with duct tape and saran wrap.

We put the second set of rails on the saw horses and Jason tack welded the legs on and drilled all the holes in both sides. I was starting to work on grinding the cross pieces for the rails when it started raining. I then cleaned up on the one side of the car where we were going to store the completed rail sections. Things tend to get messy with all the equipment and steel I have. If you don’t keep on top of it, it gets out of hand quickly.

In between all this I still managed to get 4 or 5 loads of laundry washed dried and put away. Don’t ask me how, I can’t remember.
Linda was working 2 12 hour shifts so she wasn’t around until 7 p.m. each day. By then I was trying to look like I could move again.

So that was my workout for the weekend, easy right?

That's really some welding. Even a non-welder can see that.

Thanks Laree! Jason does all the welding and is an expert at it.

Monday workout:
Legs, chest, triceps
Squats
55 x 10
105 x 10
150 x 10
200 x 10
220 x 10
Not bad considering all the step-ups I did over the weekend.

Chest
Flat bench press
40 x 20
95 x 15
135 x 5 2 sets
185 x 5
210 x 5
210 x 5 for Jason
210 x 10 for me

Triceps
Stealth press downs
60 x 15
80 x 15
100 x 15
120 x 15
120 x 30 for Jason, my triceps were tired from the Bench Press.

Decent workout considering we worked out butts off over the weekend. I need to go to work for rest.
