Laree's right, you guys are on a roll... Things are looking great around here!

Hopefully the NW gang can all get together again before the holiday time sets in... you guys game?
It's time to move on,time to get going,
What lies ahead, I have no way of knowing,
But under my feet baby, grass is growing,
It's time to move on, it's time to get going...

Bruce and Jason's Training log
09-11-07 03:37 PM - Post#347994

6,
To be honest, our workouts are pretty easy right now. We were doing 90lb db's for reps on the db rows before the end of last year. The weights we are using are ok, but we could be doing a lot more.

I am looking to work to over 300 on the squats before the end of next year. the car has been a big part of saving some extra energy. Jason is really doing a super job on the roll cage and chassis for the car. It's really amazing to see.

I want to try for about 6 months of hard workouts before next years car build frenzy starts again. Maintaining and healing are good too.

Bruce

Thanks John, we will add more pictures shortly. I have been looking on all the sites that do chassis and getting ideas. Plus, we are using the 25.2 SFI spec for the roll cage. That will let us go to 6 seconds in the quater. Doubt if we will get even close, but I want the chassis to be cerified for it.

Wed workout

Back, Shoulders & biceps.
Neutral pull downs
75 x 15
95 x 10
115 x 10
135 x 10 3 sets
Db rows
35 x 10
50 x 10
65 x 10 for 3 sets

Laterals
5 x 10
10 x 10
15 x 10
20 x 10 for 5 sets

15 lb db curls x 10 for warm up
Straight bar curls
65 x 6 for 6 sets

So we did an extra set of pull downs and DB rows.
We went to 20 on the laterals 10 reps x 5 sets. That's up from 15 x 10 for 5 sets.

I kept the same weight for the curls to see how the extra sets on pull down and row would affect out curls. We will add 5 lbs to curls next time.

Total time was about 40 minutes. Kept the rest periods to about 45 seconds for db's rows.
The rest is you go, I go. It goes pretty fast that way.

I will be the first to say that when it comes to cars I am ignorant. I have to say though I am learning from the comments and pics in your log. I never knew there was a level of certification that the roll bars had to be I thought it was universal. The pics are cool. Keep talking shop some day I may sound intelligent in that area

I have no doubt you'll hit over 300.

Manor,
There are a lot of rules for racing cars on NHRA, IHRA and other "legal" tracks. I bought 3 of the SFI spec's for full bodied cars at $35 a piece. I also bought the NHRA rule book $10-$12. It is a constant learning process for us. Luckily for me, my son Jason can fabricate and build all the stuff we need for the chassis. He is a welder/fabricator by trade and is excellent at it. This could also start a business on the side for us both. He bought me a welder’s hood for $340 and is going to teach me to TIG weld. I have done gas welding in the distant past. It will be fun.

I did the paint and most of the body work on his 70 440 Plum Crazy Purle Challenger and will do the body work and paint on this car. I'll have to show Jason how to paint this time. I may build the engine my self and I'll do the wiring on the car. I was an electrician at Boeing on 747's....and they still worked! There are a lot of wiring kits out there and it's pretty easy if you have had some training. At least I won't be 4 stories in the air on a rainy windy night fixing relay's.

I will keep posting pictures and information as long as there is some one interested.

Their is something about these posts that ignites my testosterone. Is there a track nearby where you could test out the finished product? My wife now works at a car dealership (Porche and Audi) There are several racers that get their cars worked on. One guy who races for fun said that he would let my wife ride with him on the track if ever she wanted to. I told her you better let him know I want a ride too! The guy also races lambourghinis, a freakin Porche that is worth $750,000.00!! OMG that is some expensive toys!

Seattle international raceway and Bremerton raceway.

The car is being built for the quarter mile drags. My attention span is too short for road racing. Only one person is allowed in the car if it goes faster than 14 seconds in the quarter mile.

Manor,
If you get to my area let me know, your always welcome. We have weights too!!

We are going to Seattle internaional raceway tomorrow. Jason wants to race his car at least once this year. We will be building a bigger engine (500 cu in) for that one in the next year. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them. Heavy metal is good!!

Friday used the time to get Jason's car ready to run at the Drag Strip. It's now called Pacific raceway. Used to be Seattle International Raceway.
Sat.
Lots of walking around and sitting on hard bleachers way up high to get a couple shoots for the car. This was really a workout if you consider all the walking and climbing I had to do, cause I was shot by the end of the day. I'll attach a picture of Jason warming up the tires for his second and last run.

He said he is a little rusty and waited a little to long and then went to fast. 12.49 @106.

Oh well at least he got to run the car.

We got there a little late and Jason only got one practice run. He hasn't raced this year so was a little rusty and was sleeping on the line. The truck he was running against was a 10 sec dial. He had 12.5 and went 12.49. 2 runs total. Expensive per run.

We will need to do a little refresh to that motor as it's running kind of weak right now.

Thanks for the interest.

He, He

If bodybuilding or what ever you call it isn't some fun, who would do it for long.

Last night I counted reps with a fake Arnold accent. I would have used a DD accent, but then I would have sounded like myself.

I always try to keep things humorous between sets. So maybe that's my secret....maybe.

150 x 10

Knees felt pretty good tonight. Could have done more, but didn't want to push to much. There is always Friday.

Chest
Flat bench presses
40 x 20
95 x 15 for me 8 for Jason shoulder started hurting.
95 x 8 for Jason. He decided to do cable crossovers as they don't hurt his shoulders and still work the chest
135 x 10 me
185 x 5 me
205 x 5 me
215 x 4 + 1 with a little help

5 sets of cable crossover for j with 35 15 to 20 reps.
35 x 20 2 sets of crossovers for me

triceps
rope press downs
50 x10
60 x 10
70 x 10
80 x 10
90 x 10
100 x 10
100 x 8 me 10 for J
100 x 8 me 10 for J
one set of put the drag slicks and hyper bench away.

Pretty good workout, except for Jason's shoulder bothering him. I'll have to close the garage door and turn the heater on so it's a little warmer next time. That might help. It was only 64 degrees tonight.

So, as life permits, you're working out MWF using a two-day split routine. I haven't done that particular combo yet, but it's intriguing. How has it worked for you so far?

I wouldn't think I would like diving with Sharks as they might think of me as lunch. On the other hand they might think I am the great white whale and get frightened away. Are Sharks smart enough to get frightened?

Fridays workout was called because of GOOD weather. I told Jason to take his Cobra and go hang out with his motor head friends. I got home real late from work as it was.
Saturday!!!
Big 3 hour workout in the back yard. I took out my 2 horse power thatcher and did my back yard.

If anyone has ever fought with one of these things they will know that it is a serious calorie burning workout. You have to hold this thing back as it tries to drag you accross the lawn. Then after you do a big section, get out the mower and pick up the mess. I filled one of those big green recycle barrels with just my back lawn. I was just about to start the front lawn and it started pouring rain.
Thank you GOD, I can do it tomorrow!

Oh yeah, I helped Linda by finishing shampooing the living room carpet.

That's enough for today.

Question: Did Spiderman every have to do any of this stuff? I don't think so!

A few workouts put in between the last post and now.
Regular workouts are on hold until the 26th of Oct due to being on vacation in MAUI. Does snorkeling count as a workout?

I guess I'll have to put up with the great weather, beaches, etc. Oh well, I'm tough I'll pull through

Went into what passes for the weight room at the condo's we are staying in and did a little workout today.
Pull downs 3 sets of ten
db rows 3 sets of ten with a 50. That was the biggest they had.
db laterals 4 sets of ten with 15 lb dbs.
db curls 3 sets of ten with 25 lb dbs.
super set with press downs. not sure of the weight as there were only numbers on the stack.
2 sets of machine presses, 10 to 12 reps.

That was all for the weights. Went and sat in the hot tube for a while. Lower back has been bothering me from the bed and ac.

I am actually getting tan here!

That's it for today.

We are ok. I am almost over Jet lag and sore back. Very light workouts for a while until it's better.

Still busy planning more muscle car mischief. Jason got a call that his 440 block is done at the machine shop, so we will have to swing by there and pick it up. He is building a 500+ cu in engine for the challenger to replace the one that is in there now cause it's a little tired. We had the block from the plymouth that I got so sent it out to be worked on. When the new engine is put together we can just switch engines.

Hope your doing well and thanks for thinking of us.

Workout for Saturday consisted of lifting a 440 mopar engine block with Jason and carrying it from the garage to the upstairs bed room and putting it on the floor so it won't rust in the garage. It was just finished yesterday at the machine shop and has a coating of oil on it. We wrapped it with plastic and put one of those moisture absorbing containers under the plastic to keep moisture down.

For anyone who thinks it's easy to carry one of the blocks...it ain't. It weighs 240 lbs and has sharp corners on it that cut in when you try to carry it for distance and altitude (second floor).
My back is a little sore from carrying it and I was a bit out of breath.

Regular workouts resume Monday.

Full body workout...more or less. That is what we are doing these days.
We try to hit the major muscle groups 3 times a week. Sometimes we skip shoulders and arms, but they get worked at least once a week. The basics are what build most of the muscle anyway.
Last night we did:
Light squats
55 x 10
105 x 10
150 x 10
This is a warm up for deads. The odd weight is due to the top squat.

Deads light this week
135 x 5
225 x 5 for 5 sets with only rest being the other guy doing his set.

Neutral grip pulldowns
75 x15
95 x10
115 x10
135 x10 for 2 sets

lateral raises
5 x 15
10 x15
15 x15 for 3 sets

cable crossovers
35 x 15
40 x 15
45 x15 for 2 sets

concentration curls
3 sets of 10 with 25lb dbs for me
3 sets of 10 with 30lb dbs for Jason

Press downs with stealth bomber
60 x12
80 x15
100 x 15
120 x 15 3 sets for me and 4 for Jason.

The workout took around an hour and I got a really good pump for a change.
It was about 72 degrees in the garage so we had the door open for a breeze and the workout went really well.

I will try to log more so I can keep a better records of what we are doing.

That pump was well earned. You certainly hit all the right buttons to make it happen.
Be strong. Be in shape. Be a man among men, regardless of your age or circumstances.

We are trying. It's easier in the summer with more light and heat. Winter is kind of glommy (sp) around here.

Need to work up to over 400 in the dl to be with the rest of the older guys around here.

I was kind of tired from doing a couple hours of yard work the night before. filled up 2 of those big green barrels. I make sure they are full by jumping up and down on the stuff till I can't get any more in them.

The yard is finally starting to look a little better.

That's it for today...lived through another workout.

Monday's workout.
Dead lift centric.
5 minute warm up on the semi recumbent bike for me and 5 minutes on the tread mill for Jason. This helped with a little pain I have been having behind my right knee joint in the back of my leg.

Squats
55 x 10
105 x 10
150 x 10
More a warm up for deads as much as for squating.

Deads
135 x 5
225 x 5
275 x5
315 x 5 for 4 sets. One more than the last time.
Jason did great of course. Being an old geaser I was a bit more challenged with the grip thing and it was a bit distracting. Jason told me I should probably not do a 4th set. Me quit!!! Never!! I finally got my grip right and locked by thumb over my finger. Much better and as Jason said "your best set!"

We caught our breath and unloaded the deadlift bar dripped some sweat on the floor, drank some water and did some....
Neutral lat pull downs.
75 x 15
95 x 10
115 x 10
135 x 10
These help a little to decompress our backs as much as working our huge flaring lats.

Next we did cable crossovers for huge pump and burn to our pecks.
35 x 15
40 x 15
45 x 15 Three sets I think, not...sure...think I blacked out from the effort.
I like the higher reps with these as I feel them more in the muscle and I can use less weight so it's easier on my joints. I also feel these in my biceps quite a bit.

So now we just put all the equipment away so Linda can get her car in the garage and went in and took a much needed shower. The hot water kind oh hurts on my bloody shins, but oh well.

That's all for tonight.

Bruce
