Didn't work the lower back, had a stitch in it from a fall. It received some stimulation on the air exerciser and as a stabilizer in the other movements.
It was pretty hot in the garage, so I took it a bit easy.

Hate it, but I love it. I can see why it's often called "The Devil's Tricycle." Which really makes no sense at all, since it only has one "wheel."

Got some new bands from Shelter Fitness, so I don't have to worry about overstretching. I just use a heavier band. My Planet Fitness membership expires tomorrow...I'm debating on whether or not to renew.

Hot and nasty muggy in the WWGG. Didn't feel like working out at all and my back was tweaked up. Had some difficulty walking today, especially since I got caught in the rain TWICE today. (On the motorcycle)

So what to do? Work out anyway, of course!

Got in the WWGG late, so I did just a "little" workout.

Resistance Band Seated Rows 3x10, 15
Used a much heavier band this time, didn't really feel it until later.


That was it. There was just enough stimulation for the arms and shoulders from the Air Dyne work. I like the resistance band work...and I'm finally starting to see some "lats" developing. Never really had that before...kinda dig it.

No leg work other than the Schwinn, something is really tweaked in my hip. Weighted flexion is quite painful. If this keeps up, it's MRI time.

Dumbbell Clean and Press
(Full cycle, five each hand) 3x5
Overhead Press with Strands - 10
Resistance Band Rows 4x10
Triceps Press Down with bands 12, 10


Hip and lower back are still tweaked...leg work with any type of flexion is almost not possible. Fortunately, the "sprints" on the Air Dyne give some stimulation. The clean portion of the Clean and Press also contributes. Still think that it's nerve impingement, and inflammation/swelling hasn't gone done enough to ease up on the nerve. Adapt and overcome.

10 minutes of HIIT on the Air Dyne

Lift and Carry - 10 reps
Now that my bride has a horse again, I get to schlep hay bales. So I train for specific strength. I loaded a barbell up to 80 lbs. (the approximate weight of a small rectangular bale) and do a high pull with it to mid torso. I then hold it there and walk about 10 yards and lift it onto the tailgate of my truck. 4-5 deep breaths and I lift it off and return in the same manner.

Leverage Bar One Arm Rows 2x15
(Really beginning to like these)

Seated Dumbbell Press without back support 5x5 alternating hands. This will build a certain amount of muscle and stability into the lower back.


Believe it or not, that was a sufficient amount of work.

Been working forearms and grip sporadically. Here's tonight's example:

5 sets of 3 on CoC Trainer warm up

2 sets of wrist curls

2 sets of reverse wrist curls

2 sets of dumbbell rotations (imagine the motion of twisting a doorknob very completely with a dumbbell in your hand)

2 sets of plate pinch gripping, two plates, three plates

1 set of leverbar work, front, back and side to side


Stopped there since I didn't want to over do it. Still had lots of gas in the tank but decided to make haste slowly.

Bill, I no longer do barbell squats but this week I can't do my leg workout since I will be away so I may do free squats. As you know, they can still do the job. 100! Nice going!

The partial movements were an experiment. Noting that Sergio Oliva and others seldom did full reps...I thought to give it a try. My joints feel great, but my quads and triceps will probably be sore tomorrow. Stay tuned.

100 reps of free 3/4 squats, dumbbell squats and Jefferson lifts

Partial Resistance Band Rows 3x20

Partial Incline Press with Dumbbells 2x25

Partial Resistance Band Triceps Extensions 2x20

Vertical Bar Lifts 3,2,2 top weight 107.5 plus bar

18 minutes steady state cardio on the Schwinn Air Dyne

Partial Squats - 30
Partial Rows with Resistance Bands 30,25
Partial Incline Presses 2x25
Vertical Bar Lift 3,2,2 top weight 110 lb.


Kind of hard to remember peaking out at 190 lbs. in the vertical bar lift back when I was, um, fifty. Now that I'm 65, building back up to (hopefully) a good single with 200 lbs. may take a while....
Had to moderate the effort a bit tonight, since I have a physical day at work tomorrow.

Resistance Band Seated Partial Rows 2x30
Bent Arm Pullover and Press 2x5
(For every pullover, I did 2-4 presses)
Seated Partial Presses 2x10
(Chin to top of head)
Vertical Bar Lift 2x3,2,1 top weight 112.5 lbs.


Physical day at work tomorrow...should have moderated the effort a bit, but GONZO showed up.

Jefferson Lift 2x11
Partial Rows 3x12
(Similar to a Yates row but with a pronated grip, more at a Cajin row) Really liked how these felt.
Vertical Bar Lift 3,2,2 Top weight 115 lbs. (plate value only)
Partial Presses (chin to just over top of head) 3x10

Were you able to get full extension and lat engagement on those partial rows, Bill?

One of the three sets was done full range as a warm up. The other two sets were like a Cajin row, being pulled to a point about four inches below the xiphoid process at the sternum and let down to about 3/4 extension. The movement was done without pause until the set was finished. I'm not sure whether there was full lat engagement or it was more teres major...I just know that I liked the way it felt...much more so than dumbbell rows and some other movements I've done.
I still really like the feel of seated rows with resistance bands...but this movement was being done with a special application in mind. It mimics the position I'm in when I'm picking up and carrying hay bales for Michele's horse!
