Relax and Win is one of the best books I've ever read.

Its sleep protocols saved my sleep.

I think "breathing" may be one of the most unappreciated aspects of human performance and health.

My wife and I started watching Limitless with Chris Hemsworth on Disney.

I’m not sure that we we’re watching it for quite the same reasons, but hey….

I took particular note of the episode on cold water immersion and using breathing to control your gasp reflex when that first shock of cold water hits. He suggests starting with turning your shower to cold for 30-60 secs at the end of each shower. I’ve progressed to having cold showers.

The bit that’s really interesting for me is the idea of using cold immersion as an adjunct to practicing breathing techniques. Controlling your breathing is one thing, doing it and then stepping into cold water is a level up.

Kind of like the story about the zen monk and the samurai. The zen monk is sitting in a lotus pose meditating and says to the samurai “you should learn to meditate to find stillness…” so the samurai pushes him over…. I understand the idea to be that it’s one thing to find stillness amongst stillness or to practice breathing techniques when there’s nothing else going on, it’s harder when someone’s pushing you.

This really good book. Its not time-wasting but still its not one of the best books I’ve ever read.

I learned this same thing when doing Wim Hof’s stuff years ago. It’s really nuts how the breathing can override so much of which seems out of our control. Nowadays, I’ll be walking down the street in freezing weather, tensed up and shivering, and then just remember: “oh yeah, cold is fine.” Take a big breath and the whole body relaxes and the cold, suddenly, isn’t cold anymore.

The important thing though is that this applies to a LOT more than the cold.

Concentrating on your breathing - slow and controlled - will usually drop your heart rate by 5 beats per minute or so. This is fairly easily tested when you're just sitting around, but also if you have some kind of heart rate monitor, are on a modern treadmill, etc.

This is simply ensuring that you take bigger breaths, so that more air gets into your lungs, and thus more oxygen into your bloodstream, so that your heart can get more out of fewer pumps. Nothing magical about it.

I'm not interested in cold showers. Life offers us enough pointless suffering without seeking out more for the sake of it.
