I've long enjoyed following Coach Gordo Byrn. He is a former professional triathlete who gave up what turned out to be $35M in income (investment banker) to go all in on a triathlon racing career, reaching elite levels at an advanced age. At 50, he has some wise words to share:

This is reminiscent of Dan's thoughts on will power. I think they're in an appendix of 40 Years with a Whistle. The point being, and it looks like Byrn brings this up is that if you make the tools for success habitual then you don't have to think about them or exhaust any decision making power (ie. Will Power) into completing the tasks. The easiest example is meal prep. If you know what dish you're going to eat on Monday night, and you shop for and prep it every sunday then having a healthy meal that meets your health and fitness goals becomes habitual rather than starting every Monday with the discussion "what do you want to have for dinner tonight?". The trick as always is execution. Everybody wants a new life, but not a new lifestyle.

Good article. It gave me a moment of pause to think about a few thing, physical and personal. Thanks for sharing, Mike.

Here is Gordo's E-book, Live Long and Prosper. Lots of similar ideas, but in more depth.

Great article there! And thanks for the DL of the book.

That cemetery bit in the article --

  • Quoting:
I live near a cemetery, which helps me remember my expected value is negative infinity.

A coworker told me a while ago that she lives right next to a cemetery.

She said, "Every birthday I swear that place is a little closer to my house!"
Life's too short to worry about longevity.

With (both) Dans' permission, of course, I am stealing this.

Just want to apologize for this post. I realize how aggressive it sounds. That was not my intent. And it probably bears mentioning that I've always found the members of this community to be extremely welcoming and helpful; which is something I strive for.

As far as I'm concerned, no apology necessary. My reply was in jest regarding Coach John's lighthearted talk about gradually "stealing" other peoples' material. Since Dan Martin is such a valuable contributor and a close friend of Dan John's, I included him as well.

Again, no offense taken here!! And yes, this is a TREMENDOUS forum, full of great info and populated by "grownups." I love to just come here, read, and occasionally comment..though I honestly contribute very little, if any, real nuts and bolts info.
