Dan, could you briefly elucidate on the benefits of fish oil consumption?

A few years ago, I invented a thing called Internet search:

Fish oil benefits? You bet! Fish oil health benefits are important and wide-ranging. Proven by numerous clinical studies, fish oil benefits range from brain health to heart health to pregnancy health.

Fish oil health benefits come primarily from the two Omega 3 essential fatty acids in fish oil -- DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and to a lesser extent EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). While plant sources such as flax seed will provide the body with Omega 3 oil, the body must convert it into DHA and EFA, and that conversion can be difficult for some people or for elderly people. However, fish oil provides the body with DHA and EPA in a natural form that can easily be assimilated.

Here are seven major fish oil benefits:

1. Lowers blood triglycerides - high levels of triglycerides are known to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

2. Helps reduce likelihood of blood clots - fish oil benefits include the prevention of blood platelets from sticking together and forming blood clots.

3. Lowers mild high blood pressure - fish oil helps lower blood pressure when it is due to high cholesterol and hardening of the arteries.

4. Reduces inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and gout - fish oil health benefits come from the DHA and EPA that reduce the amount of inflammation-causing substances.

5. Lowers risk of developing Altzheimer's Disease - studies have found that fish oil seems to help protect the nervous system.

6. Reduces depression rates - the lack of DHA has been linked to higher incidence rates of depression.

7. Improves immune system function - fish oil benefits and studies have linked lowered risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer to the consumption of fish oil.

And there are even more fish oil benefits! From lowered risk of age-related macular degeneration to reducing the risk of osteoporosis to benefits for Type II diabetics, fish oil health benefits are truly spectacular.

However, there are some precautions that you should be aware of when considering your sources for fish oils. Some fish oils can contain:

* Contaminants such as PCB's and heavy metals like mercury

* Additional additives to keep the fish oil from becoming rancid during the transporting and encapsulating process

* Low DHA levels

Inferior and contaminated fish oil products do exist, while at the same time fish oils are available that are harvested from pristine ocean waters. Be sure the fish oils you consume to enjoy fish oil health benefits contain high levels of DHA and EPA and are free from the heavy metals. Read as much as you can about even more fish oil benefits that provide an amazing array of health benefits.

Thank you Dan. While I certainly understand the use of the information superhighway, I was hoping that you could enlighten us with your practical, no-nonsense perspective. You came through like the true champion you are.

Ho. I am heading toward my fridge where the bottle is.
On this product they recommend 2,5 ml which equals 1400mg omega3 per day. How much do you take?

Here's my experience; and as most of you know, I feel my experience triumphs most people's BS:

1. My skin looked better. Rosier? I don't know, but it certainly does well with the fish oil.
2. Combined with ZMA (the Mg) and sugar free metamucil, fish oil eliminates elimination problems. I am convinced that low level constipation impacts (great use of puns here, really) performance for many athletes.
3. It works well with anti-inflammatory medicines. Synergist or just more bang, it works swell (cheap pun, but still in the ballpark).

4. Hey, c'mon, it's as cheap as anything and it works pretty darn good!

I'm knocking on wood as I type, but since using fish oil in quantity, I've stopped using Glucosamine/Chodroitin and OTC anti-histimines.

Dan-

What would be a good minimal daily dose? Should the doses be split up throughout the day?

Thanks, Mike

I'm no doctor, but here is the system I recommend:

Continue increasing your dose until you get "the runs." Back off from there. I got this advice years ago and it seems to work. For someone 220-230, you can take four Flameouts (Biotest brand), twice a day, or the better Costco brand three times a day with four to six caps.

So, test over a normal week or two.

I can vouch for numbers 1 & 3 above after being off v-diet for a couple of months the weight loss along with the clean diet and healthy fats has dropped my cholesterol numbers to where I've come off the medication and it also appears that I'll come off the BP medicine in another month since the numbers there are looking good also.

I also throw hemp oil into the mix, kind of a trip down memory lane to my hippie days

Upped my fish oil from 2,000 to 4,000mg (hope that is right) since January.

Dan and I were talking on the phone this morning, and the whole subject of injuries came up. I heal fast, even at 59. Have noticed the difference in joint pain since increasing the fish oil.

Probably genetics.

While Fish Oil caps are very convenient, don't rule out just eating more fish. Canned Salmon, Jack Mackerel, Sardines are all pretty inexpensive and are packed with good stuff. I ask my local grocer to purchase these items by the case for me. 15oz can is $1.50. While Tuna is also cheap, with the possible Mercury content, I tend only to eat some fresh Sushi every so often.
Chow On.
