I have been doing only Heavyhands for the past month. My workout is 60 minutes long and I have logged 23 workouts. During that hour I walk and swing to a level 2 and above. Basically anything to keep my heart rate at or close to 152 bpm. In less than a month I managed to drop my resting heart rate from 60 bpm to 52 bpm.

I am going to keep this up for a total of 6 months and see what happens. Just a quick update for those of you who answered my questions on this training system.

I have contemplated getting a weight vest for rucking or getting ankle & wrist weights for some kinda version of heavy hands.

What implements do you use?

I started out with the original 2 lb heavyhands weights. I added a weight vest but realized that it did not do a lot. I purchased some of the new grips and heavier weights and I like them much better.

You can go on eBay and find old 2 lb and 3 lb hand weights for pretty cheap instead of buying the new version.

I haven't tried the ankle weights yet. I live in a neighborhood with a lot of hills and find it easy to keep my heart rate at 85%.

For me:

Ankle weights: biggest change in "how I feel"
HH: these are the way to get the HR up
Vests: no difference in HR, but really leave me feeling fatigued.

So, I know almost exclusively use the five pound ankle weights and three pound HH.

Of course, I don't need to have my HR very high.

I haven't really done Heavy hands seriously

I do wear a 25# vest on occasion but generally wear my climbing pack loaded to 25 to 30# as it's more specific to what I do. The vest does seem to offer some "breathing muscles" work which may be worthwhile? Just moving the chest in/out/up/down against the weight on my chest from the vest. I mostly belly breathe but the chest/diaphragm still have to work.

Ankle weights seem to offer the most bang for the buck so to speak for me. Good heart rate workout but really makes my "hiking legs" work better.

I have always held 3kg (6.6lb) DB's....but my sessions are usually based around steps taken.

Maybe I should go lighter, but these have been good thus far.

Going heavier seems like such the right idea, but really, in my experience, increasing the stride length and striving to walk a straight line makes the HR jump more than more load...and slower.

I agree, though as most of my walking has been on the spot, it is a touch different.

Is it like Marching in Place with loaded carries?
Better than one would think?

Yes the same....it started when a session was planned for a client and the weather was less than favourable. It has just kind of stuck.

On the spot makes it easier to work on hip flexion. You can also do this, but emphasise knee flexion (almost kicking yourself in the bum).

When you do the latter and allow the knee to travel forwards as it wants to, the angle of the thigh very closely resembles the angle you have in normal walking, but with alot more knee flexion for those sleepy hammies.

I've thought the same thing. I also found I can think about lifting the toe as I bring the leg up...little things.

Now, it's also got a short shelf life. I'm not doing one hour March in Place workouts for the rest of my life...

Haha yes marching on the spot has its limitations that's for sure. You seem to find areas of your house where the floor creaks - that you had no idea creaked before haha.

You also have to be creative with the movements eg
Day one - focused hip flexion and front raise action.
Day two - heal kicks (allowing knee to move forwards a little as you do so) with lateral raise action.

Day three - either leg action with overhead press

Day four - either leg action with combination of .... front raise, lateral raise, punch, overhead press, curl.

Then add in rotational marching on the spot - this loads the foot, ankle, knees and hips (on the planted foot) in a subtle yet noticeably different way.

I also make the sessions shorter....100 steps and done....or 100 steps of each movement (if I am using more than one movement) and done.

Richard

Maybe I will add some ankle & wrist weights for some easy cardio when I walk listening to my audiobook.

Dan do you feel wrist weights pretty much do the same as heavy hands?

Worst case scenario if they don't i suppose I could just hold them rather then strap them on.

I don't know. I know this: the ankle weights "sit" well and don't move. If the wrist wraps slide around, I could imagine it would bug the shit out of me.

Honestly, my three pound weights cost just over a dollar each (NPS can just be a silly place to buy things...it's the place I got two 36k bells and a 24k bell for $65...I couldn't ship those bastards for that!!!), so I am not going to invest my vast fortune in anything else for a while.

Obviously, as we are discovering, the farther from the core the load is...the more it impacts HR. So, the basic answer would be yes...but I don't have them to prove it.

My apologies, but I cannot find NPS. What does that stand for, please?

No idea. It's a local store that sells stuff that "falls off the back of a truck."

Wow that had to be one of the best deals I have seen on KBs!
