This is bringing me back to the early eighties...I don't want to go back to the early Eighties
- Threat of nuclear annihilation
- Horrible clothes
- Horrible music....that was when actual rock bands turned into non-rock bands...well actually the Clash was pretty darn good...We were also into the Violent Femmes, they were great to see at a small venue, big bar...ok maybe the music wasn't all bad, just mostly bad.

Think the slogan should Be "Stand with Ukraine, Down with Putin, Say no to the 80's"

Ps...I know this a fitness forum, feel free to delete, i'm just venting/having fun...not looking to start a political dialogue.

Thanks for adding some levity to the situation.

I, too, had flashbacks to the Cold War and assured mutual destruction. With the state that Russia is in plus the pandemic I suspect that Putin feels boxed in. He struck me as a bit unhinged during his rant. I suspect that he was testing the NATO waters to see if anyone would blink, then he got himself too committed and still doubled down. If you do some research you might find that he isn't the strategic genius some make him out to be. Unfortunately, time will tell. With portions of Europe committing to electric cars and phasing out fossil fuels Putin sees that his cash cow could be drying up and the oligarchs don't like that prospect.

I'm with your on the Sicilian thing , part of my family is from there. I think the world will get through this, they just need to work out some face saving option for Putin.

Speaking of levity, our annual xmas movie (which even the kids love) is "The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming" Height of the cold war, and they make this movie and it is awesome, even the russians loved it. It actually in small way made a difference. See quote below:

"When the Russian ambassador to the US heard that a film had been made in which the Russians were not villains, he asked for a print to be sent to the Embassy. It travelled across Europe from one Russian embassy to another, and finally was screened in the Kremlin. Jewison was invited to attending a screening in Moscow, at the Soviet Filmakers Union. He could attend in the middle of the Cold War because he was Canadian, not American, one of the few Hollywood directors ever invited to Russia. The film was screened in a huge theater, with many of the most prominent Russian filmmakers in attendance. At the end, they got to their feet, clapping, some weeping, showing Jewison it was just not the Americans who were hoping for reconciliation, but that it was a universal hope between both nations. Perhaps, it may have taken a small step towards thawing the Cold War."

Putin has engineered a terrible atrocity against a free nation.
The rest of the free world needs to put on their big boy or girl pants and squeeze him where it hurts and do it NOW!

A couple nights ago, I reread John Steinbeck's "The Moon is Down," about Germany's occupation of Norway in WWII. It painted the German soldiers as human with none of the Ramboesque nonsense that has zero basis in reality. The novel was published in 1942 and shows how a populace slowly adapts to making an occupation as painful as possible for an occupying force that cannot let its guard down for an instant as you never know which old lady lost a son and is handy with her knitting needles.

The various European Underground factions printed and distributed "The Moon is Down." It was so effective a morale booster possessing this book in Italy was an automatic death sentence.

Steinbeck was awarded the Norwegian King Haakon VII Freedom Cross, which is awarded to Norwegian or foreign military or civilian personnel for outstanding achievement during war.

I strongly suggest the book if you are interested in what Resistance really looks like. It's the classic "death by a thousand papercuts." I've read it about 8 times. As an almost 36 year Service Member, this book really hits home. I've been homesick during deployment, had I been in this situation it would have driven me crazy...

Should Putin decide to occupy Ukraine, it will be a long occupation, what with pictures of Molotov Cocktails awaiting Russian vehicles, Ukraine's former president armed up with an AK-47, and the Ukranian lady getting in a Russian soldier's face and saying "put these sunflower seeds (Ukraine's Natl Flower) in your pocket so that when you lay down beautiful flowers will appear."
Just my 2¢

This is the beginning of the end for Putin. The question is whether it takes years, with grief for millions, or whether his people turn on him quickly to "de-Nazify" the Kremlin.

I don't know who first said it, but political leaders are like underwear - they should be changed frequently, and for the same reason.

Being 34 and Canadian I haven’t seen much in my lifetime.

This whole thing led me on a rabbit trail. A lot of why’s and what’s this and what really was that. I went all the way back to WWI, the founding of the USSR, the Soviet revolution and the overthrow of the czars, on through WWII and why the East and west divided, then the Berlin Wall, and later it’s fall. I’m sure I missed a lot of nuance.

I love your guys perspective. It’s one thing to read facts. But most of you are older and wiser than me. You have a better handle on the why. The Berlin Wall only fell 31 years ago. That’s not even that long ago. It doesn’t help being Canadian. Despite being part of nato we were just bystanders in the Cold War. NATO really should stand for ‘needs American troops occasionally’. In Canada we live in safety because we are protected by proximity.

Why in the world isn’t this stuff taught in school. Ya we learn dates and big events like D-day. But the why. That’s really missing in education. Why did these things happen. After my long research study today I know a little more. Still don’t really understand it though.

I had to face palm at his denazify comment. The Ukrainian president is Jewish…

Although my own prime minister just called a woman from the opposition a nazi sympathizer. Turns out she is Jewish.

The world we live in…

Putin is a bad guy but there is a Nazi problem in the Ukraine. It doesn’t justify the invasion and the Russians exaggerate while the Western press is currently acting like it is totally made up. Now that the war is going on you have to assume people on all sides are spinning furiously but there have been stories about this before.

My own problem with the moralizing is that we have been supporting the murderous Saudi war in Yemen since 2015 which has killed countless children via famine, so it would be nice if we stopped doing that while also condemning Putin. Moral consistency is a good thing.

Anyway, that’s my speech from the soapbox.

Thanks WxHerk! Great book. "The flies have conquered the fly paper." I'll have to double check my memory/facts, but I think, after WW2, the Ukrainians resisted the Soviets up to the early 1960's. Pray for Peace, always.

Imagine to many Russians (who I can't imagine were taught any different growing up - see comments above on education) Nazi = expansionist enemy from the west who killed millions of Russians. So you can see why they are peddling this nonsense.

If anywhere needs to be "De-Nazified", it's the Kremlin. 60% of Russia is horrified. I just heard a Russian on TV saying he doesn't think his country realises yet that the last week has sent them careering back into the Middle Ages.

The Russian army thought they were on exercises a week ago. Can you imagine if the US Army was on exercise in North Dakota, and the orders came through saying "now invade Canada"? Or Brits in Northern Ireland being told to invade the Republic? They cannot be very motivated.

Putin is on very thin ice right now.
