Lot of conversation comes up with search about fasting mimicking diet but I had trouble finding much about training while doing it. I'd love to know anyone's experience. Did you need to cut back on weight or volume? I just started today with my own home cooked version which needs....adjustment, because it tastes like GACK! Longo's is just too pricey for my budget; one 5 day box costs as much or more than I spend for food in an entire month!

But the training aspect is what I'm interested in.

Go to my back issues of WW to find cheaper options...much cheaper.

Really, it's a can of olives, some nuts and veggie soup for a few days.

I trained normal.

Thanks! That's great info. I made a smoothie this morning w/ protein powder, leafy greens, coconut oil, and salt (some cacao powder and monk fruit). The coconut oil is what killed it. Did not really mix in and was just foamy glory of grease floating on top. Choked it down but I love olives!!! So off to the market... Thanks again

I'd note that keeping protein LOW is important if you're doing the FMD as prescribed. It's not just lowering calories.

Coconut milk, brother. Coconut milk. The kind from a can. Whole different ball game. Just don’t use too much or it’ll shoot through you like a laser beam.

I have a few "issues" and one is I can't handle too much concentrated fat at once. I think my liver chokes. I also think the inherent sweetness of coconut in that concentrated form is a bit much for me though mixed w/ cacao powder might do the trick ;)

Anyway, Dan's basic formula rocks! I just finished making a salad of spinach, bok choy, and Romaine with almonds, walnuts, and green olives chopped up as dressing. Wonderful flavor and something to chew on.

I have certainly pushed the edges of that limit myself, haha. Good luck with FMD regardless. I look forward to trying it myself before long.

My ex- has pretty bad gall bladder issues which she tries to ignore. Last summer she went solo camping and after a hike was very thirsty and hungry so drank an entire can of coconut milk. You can guess the rest. Told me later she thought she was maybe dying. Silly goose.

I do like playing with food and macros so went on cronometer.com and came up with a days food that is very close to Longo's total calories but I think better macros i.e. more fat, less carbs, so it knocks on Keto's door harder. Likely feeling that today as my energy was a bit low, maybe due to my body trying to find ketosis and not quite getting there yet.

I also learned that green and black olives are fairly different, green having more calories, more fat, and less carbs...enough to be significant I think

1 Day's FMD:
1 cup green olive
2.5 oz nuts
12 oz leafy greens

Approximate nutritional content:
protein 17.5 grams/8%
carbs 9.8 grams/12%
fat 71.5 grams/81%
calories 740

Longo's version:
protein 16.3g4/9%
carbs 181.4g47%
fat 35.4g/4%
725 kcal

This just came in my email in medical news blog

https://news.usc.edu/173485/fasting-mimick ing-diet-breast-cancer-ho rmone-therapy-usc-researc h/

Studies suggest a diet that mimics fasting could boost breast cancer therapy
A USC-led team of international scientists found that a one-two punch of a fasting diet with hormone therapy may enhance the effects of breast cancer treatment.

I learnt this one the hard way but had a different side effect. After putting a whole can into my shake one morning, I had the only migraine of my life for almost an entire day. Never had coconut milk since.

Longo sponsored that study so it seems a little too close to PR for me. There are plenty of “groundbreaking” studies on keto and cancer, and at least one I’ve seen implying that a diet featuring monstrous quantities of lemons reverses breast cancer. (A lot of Aussies and Kiwis jumped on that one, no?) I think the truth hidden in it all is probably something like: typical abundance diets promote an unhealthy physical environment which helps cancer along (anabolism?), and low-cal, fasting, and fat-oriented deprivation diets seem to create an environment which makes life harder for disease.

Abundance and deprivation diets. I like that.

Regardless, this would all probably seem like common sense to my grandmother.

I think I may be getting a bit "long in the tooth" to be cutting calories. I lost 6 lbs and some noticeable strength. Not a huge amount of strength but enough to make 70% feel more like 80%. And at previous stable weight of 117 lbs, 6 lbs is substantial. So now, food is KING!

That's consistent with what Longo generally seems to think. His longevity diet is mostly about what not to eat (which I think is more expansive than it probably needs to be, but that might be motivated reasoning on my part) rather than there being any particular magic in certain foods.

I totally think that for health matters, what you eat is mostly about avoiding excess.

FMD and Rusty Moore's work have both got me much more seriously into more veggies. I was a lunatic BEFORE reading all of this, but my FMD experiences were just too important to ignore.
