Watched a program on the Military Channel last night about Parris Island. Makes me glad I went thru the USAF "Gentleman's Club" at Lackland AFB.

I still want one of those Marine swords, though.

I saw one that was on the History channel a little while back, wonder if it is the same production. It brought back a lot of memories for me. Those sand fleas are brutal. I'm sure Marooned Mike and Pete LV can offer some input on this (speaking of Pete, where the heck is he?)

The Air Force had awesome chow halls and better exchanges than we did. We would hit them all the time on the weekends.

When I was at the Presidio in language school, we used to go over to the Naval Post-Grad school for breakfast on the weekends. Now THEY had a mess hall to remember!

Russian language, spent my time at NSA outside of DC, then bailed 'cause I couldn't handle the east coast weather. Now try and justify that to the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Oddly enough, there are a few people here who did the same work. You won't hear much about it, though. In fact, when I was at NSA there was a huge cover story about the agency in US News and World Report. Lots of photos of the outside of our building, whole bunch of filler before getting to the real story: They couldn't find anyone who would talk.

Cool job. Lots of secret stuff. I'm guessing you had a top secret security clearance.

I had a secret security clearance but no one would let me see anything secret. Besides, not a lot of secret stuff in weather.

My ex-wife has a cousin who was in the DSL school with the Army at Monterrey California. He was trained as a Polish language specialist and served time in Poland with the US Army. I think he teaches there now.

And these days you're in tough enough shape to do it.

How long ago, Ben; do you know? I spent a year there between 1976-77. We wouldn't have crossed paths, though. The service branches were completely co-mingled at the Presidio, but the languages kept us separate.
